How does this engine always get mistaken with a different identity? We're solving the mystery to untangle the train name confusion. The SECR P class is one of my favourite steam engines of all time, so here's an explanation of the preserved locos of the class.
To clarify, this video was made long before Jago Hazard's recent video touring the Bluebell Railway fleet. Many Thomas fans have had the same confusion of seeing No.178 and thinking it's Primrose due to its fame in The Railway Series.
This wasn't really directed as a full Guide Rail, but skims over the histories of each of the 4 surviving P class tanks. I may come back and do individual factfiles on them.

'Nettle' used to take everyone by surprise due to being fitted with an LMS Stanier style hooter. People would hear it from a distance and wonder if a Black 5 had turned up!

The P Class is adorable, and I hope that Primrose returns to steam. If I ever visit the Bluebell Railway, I'll be sure to say hi to those flower girls.

The Ps deserve points for how cute they are. I also find it funny how most people confuse them despite the story literally saying "Primrose is 27."

I actually did not know Nettle existed. I always thought that the only three P Classes still around were Bluebell, Primrose, and some random ROD one. I never realized that the ROD one was actually Nettle, as living on the other side of the world, I’ve never been to the Bluebell, and I also did not realize that one of the P Classes was dismantled and rusting. I really learned something from this, thanks a lot for the information! Out of the four, bluebell has to be my favourite, can’t beat a classic!

'Bluebell' is my favourite out of the four because she's always stood out, and I've a wooden model of her. Pity about Primrose & Nettle, but hopefully, they and Pride of Sussex will have the chance to shine someday.

I had that Primrose/Bluebell/Nettle ERTL toy as a kid. For a long time I believed it was supposed to be Adventure Begins Thomas because it having an E2 shell confused me.

Bluebell has to be my favourite, I like her blue livery. And I didn't 4 p class tanks were preserved.

I had gotten confused and believed that Primrose was renamed to Nettle at some point and didn't think anything of the newer photos given "oh there's 2 others, so it's probably one of them" so this clears it up.

Good video! I think it'll help to clear up the confusion surrounding the preserved Ps. I'll be honest, I had no idea more than two had been preserved until I actually visited the Bluebell and saw one of Primrose's tanks on display.

what I find weird is that in the illustrations stepney’s the only sentient bluebell engine.

I like Bluebell more because she looks fabulous in blue. Too bad Primrose was undergoing an overhaul that even I didn't know that even after Stepney's book was published that the actual engine wasn't running and that there was another member of the P class in its place.

I have a fond liking for the P class, though nowhere near as remarkable and famous as it’s LBSC elder cousins, the P class is a cute class of engines and I find them really fascinating and attractive. I saw and rode behind number 178 in real life at York in 2018, which adds to he fondness

Only 8 were produced and four preserved? Huh. Those little engines are fortunate. Not many preserved locos are able to share that title of having half of their class saved...

Nettle is absolutely wonderful... giving itchiness to all who makes fun of her... Primrose or Bluetooth oops Bluebell they are wonderful, but it sad to note that only the ones featured in the good Reverend's books have been remembered. All the Steam locomotives are precious regardless of who they were Industrial locomotives or the so called prestigious route mainline locomotives. The Mallard or an industry tank engine all did their work and that what matters, hauling people or cargo from point A to point B, stories or no stories.... all had a great appetite for coal and water.... so all are basically locomotives and if they are doing awesome work, that's awesome, publicity and stories make the yarn to draw crowds that's good for preservation societies and their accounts, but for a person who loves the locomotives all of them are beautiful and important....

I think I like Primrose the best. She's a cutie and if you have two ERTL models of Bluebell you can just pretend or customize the other one to be Primrose very easily and I think of the weathered Bluebell I have as Primrose.

4 preserved, the highest amount of preserved Engines, mainly coz only 8 were built.......now if only we can get all 4 of them together in one place for an event
