The Avon Bridge in Washington Township Park, Indiana is known as the Haunted Bridge due to its many legends and folklore. The bridge is a 1907 railway bridge with three 75-foot arches and 24 7-foot, 4-inch arches on top. Some say the bridge is haunted because of the following events that may have occurred during its construction or use:
* A mother and baby fell to their deaths on the tracks
* A railroad worker was buried alive in wet cement after slipping during construction
* European workers building the bench may have been buried or encased in the concrete
Other stories include spirits hovering around the east end of the bridge and a woman mourning a sick baby who fell into White Lick Creek. Some claim to hear the buried worker moaning when a train crosses the bridge, while others say they can hear a mother screaming for her baby at night.
The bridge's mystique draws visitors from far away, including teenagers who party, leave graffiti, and hang out to experience the folklore. Local historian Susan Truax says some people enjoy making the bridge mysterious as a way to celebrate Halloween or add some excitement to the area. The bridge is featured in the Avon town seal and many paintings and photographs . similar story to what my father told me is popular among locals. The story explains that a young mother was walking the tracks to take her sick baby to the doctor. She slipped and fell from the bridge killing both her and her baby. At night, sounds of the mother screaming for her infant can be heard.
The last common legend is of four workers falling to their death into White Lick Creek. People claim to still hear thuds and splashes in the creek.
