Class 1-B has been in the series since season two, but it's not till this arc that we start to get an idea of most of their characters and personalities. Take Kuroiro for example: for most of this match, he's the edgy, intense broody guy full of confidence. Then, when we see him with Komori, we see him as the shy, quiet introvert with a crush on the botany girl. It's cute stuff, and all within a couple of episodes. Edit: I know mushrooms aren't plants, but you get my point.

The difference between Kendo and Momo's strategic prowers is that, while Kendo is a match to Momo, the latter can adapt quickly and come up with a plan at the spur of the moment, with that coming up ever since the final exam and only blossomed during her confrontation with real villains. Also... Shoto was right, Kendo really underestimated Momo. Kendo's plan was based from what she witnessed from Momo during her fight against Tokoyami at the Sports Festival. I mean, she was not wrong in thinking that close combat is Momo's biggest weakeness, but separate Momo from the rest and try to deal with her alone really was a bad decision, as that separated both teams from their respective leader, while Momo was able to give her teammates what they needed to win the battle. And they would have won... if it wasn't for the toxic mushroom spores.

Class B Support Team Itsuka Kendo Hero Name: Battle Fist Quirk: Big Fist Grade: C Hero Class: Combat/Detective/Rescue (She’s borderline symbol class) Now having a downgraded quirk to Mount Lady isn’t doing her MANY favors, but she really is utilizing what she already has. Kendo has been demonstrating EVERY class of hero across the show and that’s REALLY rare. She is the most influential member of their class much like Mirio who also gets EXTREMELY far with a slightly jank quirk except he ACTUALLY made himself a symbol class. She has a thunderclap shockwave move that’s a major upgrade from her waving around her hands against the villain Mustard, she’s shattering Tungsten shields, and she’s carrying over 1,000lbs of equipment all across the battlefield after Momo catches her. And she even had to go upstairs to catch Hagakure. She’s quite the bruiser. But she’s also VERY quickly reaching the maximum her quirk can do. If only her hands can grow, she can only make them so big before her arms can’t properly support her hands regardless how muscular she really is. And while they are proportionately sturdier, it’s no hardening. And her max speed is all about moment of impact. She HAS to focus on her regular body to accomplish what she wants. (Being buff solves everything strikes again) She needs martial arts, and she needs to be a group planner. Despite being a bruiser she HAS to be the brains of the team because of how conditional her quirk is. Edit: She CAN still have gauntlets for support items with various tools on them. So her variety can improve more but her power is going to be entirely dependent on her buff capacity. And I don’t think she’s going to be Endeavor sized when she goes pro. Manga Fukidashi Hero Name: Comicman Quirk: Comic Grade: B Hero Class: Combat/Containment This is perhaps one of the hardest applied quirks in the show. It’s literally onomatopoeia. It’s not volume based for its range, his humidifying the mushrooms was about the same range as his word blasts. (And yes the translators did struggle with how they wanted to handle him this arc.) But the reality is that this quirk is rough because it basically has 2 modes. Not in use, and maximum power. It appears to only go in straight lines like Naval Laser too. We saw for ourselves that it’s a city street he can cover quite easily, but that’s also a problem. If he can’t control his range, he’s a danger to both himself AND teammates if he’s not careful. This quirk is super interesting to see how it’ll evolve, but it’s caveats are so big, if he can’t overcome them, he REALLY won’t have much to his name going forward. But he can do some REALLY fun stuff and cover some elemental effects pretty well, so he could be better support. (He is REALLY good at changing field conditions having more ways than any other character) But he’s meant to be dedicated long range force, and he can’t use it willy nilly. He NEEDS moderation, he NEEDS to be able to switch or combine other moves quicker. These kinds of possibilities can change him into a more high level threat. Especially because he’s so small and chances are he’s going to stay that way. Edit: I’ve also been informed his moderation appears to be word choice based. Which is…a choice. And yes I acknowledge he has A LOT of reality warping capabilities. It’s with how unclear he keeps his range, and direction in check, those are PRETTY important when the guy has a BIG support quirk. I’d like to hear the word CRASH and NOT assume I’m in the warpath if I’m a teammate fighting in front of him. Kinoko Komori Hero Name: Shemage Quirk: Mushroom Grade: F Hero Class: Rescue/Containment This is a VERY difficult to apply gimmick. It’s not destructive, it’s hard to aim since it’s spore based. She likely needs an entire squad of support to be effective. And even if she controls the EXACT kind she grows, it’s not going to slow many down outside the distraction and horror of your body being able to grow literal mushrooms on yourself. And she uses it almost to blind you. But she DOES have that last move. And I’m not sure about the ethics of cutting off the wind pipe at a long range, but since this is namely support, it’s more self defense. Even though for what she’s doing she should actually NEVER have self-defense, since it’s such an aggressive move it should give other people self defense AGAINST her. But she’s not ACTUALLY shoving mushrooms down your throat they’re coughing on the spores. So it’s just REALLY unsettling when you see it. (Let’s call it the Darth Vader special because KZfaq won’t let me call it what I would actually describe.) For improvements this quirk needs to be cartoony. REALLY cartoony. The mushrooms have to be able to get so large it makes the Mario world jealous. It needs to be able to grow FAST and then she essentially can use her mushrooms essentially like an earthbender elevates platforms. That would INSTANTLY make this a top of the line rescue quirk and also provide her mobility. And since mushrooms are so…rubbery perhaps oversized variety can be used as shields. If she could control HOW they grow too so she could make like root attacks or something. This quirk is JANK so she honestly needs a LOT to improve on. Shihai Kuroiro Hero Name: Vantadark Quirk: Dark Grade: D Hero Class: Combat (doesn’t demonstrate other potential classes at least. More than possible to be any of them though) Well he was trusted to go into a 4v1 so I think we know he’s certainly not to be trifled with. In his quirk explanation they said he’s developed it into moving around in the shadows, so we don’t know exactly when he became capable. But my guess is it was BEFORE the sports fest. Momo simply knew too much about his movement style at the start for it not to be something she already she knew about. And all the new moves are from the provisional license test and beyond it. He must be a menace at nighttime. Now seeing as he can shift and move dark shadow, could he not influence other shadows and dark objects into physical controllable masses? It’s REALLY technical and I can’t explain how it COULD work. But ACTUALLY compelling Dark shadow to attack creates some WEIRD implications and rules. Right now he’s just a speedster. He has permeations surprise, and this can go in a LOT of directions. I would take a movement of shadows could lead to a more literal shadow form where he merges with shadow, and depending on the size or darkness of the shadow he can keep the residual darkness on himself for some type of short term booster, or just do what he REALLY looks like and turn him into The Spot from Spiderverse where he doesn’t just travel in the shadow but also warps and can split his body up and around or even multiply what he’s hidden. That would definitely make this more viable of a quirk. (Also he crushes on Komori.) For gear, I was thinking about it from last episode and I saw someone believed he should have gear that should give him the ability to turn off or shatter unnatural light fixtures in a vicinity. Say a villain base is condemned but lights keep him from the shadow. Which is ABSOLUTELY a good idea. (Wish I could credit them) Other ideas I’ve heard all seem to cause graffiti or other forms of collateral damage. Like black paint or smoke bombs. This is a WEIRD set.

I just noticed a funny little quirk (probably unintentional by the writers) with the night vision goggles. When dark shadow used them it had an overlay, which means that somehow momo was able to put firmware onto the devices she creates. And while theoretically the idea of creating the goggle transistors in a state that matches the firmware code is possible, the number of them would be physically impossible for a single mind to comprehend. (outside of anime superpowers) Also the thought that momo has a full knowledge of the coding required do develop this firmware on top of all the chemistry study and school is so over the top that it makes me laugh. Because, if she can do this (in the middle of combat no less) then we have to assume she can do it for at least a few other devices, and we have already seen her make a tracker and receiver which requires the same skills. It feels like the same type of stuff about the earphone jacks and camera quirks which are based off modern devices. And questions about how a genetic quirk is able to know what technology we have and how to correctly interface with it aside, this show is great as to how it uses them but I find it really funny how some of these pose some weird questions as soon as you examine them beyond what the show presents for its story to work. Though there is probably an interesting discussion to be had about the show being designed to prompt you to think about how quirks could be used in interesting ways but also have really lore breaking quirks if you think about them too hard. I think though that they way the show prompts us to think about the use of quirks by telling us what they do (and not as much the how) and then says ‘given you can do this, how can you use it’ instead of ‘given that this is how this works, how can you repurpose that’. Which directs the type of thinking the audience is prompted to go in the direction the show actually wants to explore. Conversely the ‘A Certain Scientific Railgun’ series takes the opposite approach to unique uses of powers in a super powered society, by making the characters use their powers in cool ways by examining how they work and figuring out how to use that ‘how’ in really cool ways rather than accepting the existence of the power at face value like my hero decides to do.

Kuroiro's Quirk actually allows him to merge with anything that is black, not just shadows. However, because shadows are dark-colored, he normally merges with them. I mean, you can see how he merged with a black mushroom... yeah, he merged with the mushroom, not its shadow. Tokoyami used his cloak, which is black, to force Kuroiro to merge with it so he wouldn't get away, as Tokoyami was holding him tight.

Class A Support Team Momo Yaoyorozu Hero Name: Creati Quirk: Creation. Grade: C Hero Class: Detective/Rescue/Containment So while Momo can make quite literally everything so long as she knows the molecular structure, her versatility is actually not unlimited. Some of the stronger classmates at higher level power CAN have the force of a nuke, and she could conceivably just make a nuke. (If she had access to that kind of info, which I guarantee she does not. Countries tend not to talk about how their nukes are made.) But even if she DID she could never make one because unlike her classmates, it’s not a force she can aim, and it comes with the radioactive shockwave. So even if she’s out of harm’s way, which she likely won’t be while fighting, she’s STILL likely in range of the part that contaminates everything. So she will never reach city levels from caveats like that for much more powerful creations even with the potential to do so. But what she CAN do is more interesting in terms of support. Now that she has confidence again, she has worked more for herself instead of trying to use what she thinks works with force. (Most of the time she’s thinking about what Deku, Todoroki, Iida, or others do which doesn’t really align with her own line of thinking but she respects them so much she values their opinions and methods more than her own for a long time. But that’s after getting humbled by Tokoyami in combat during the sports fest) She has learned how to layer her creations and increase her stamina. She made 4 creations with JUST the cannon move. With the cannon, the designed bag, thermal goggles, and disinfectant. She can really keep what she’s making hidden now and her plans secret. And if she doesn’t remove her creations from her body entirely, I think she actually gets to keep the body matter until AFTER it’s completely let go which she kept a lot attached. What comes to her TRUE evolution of power is spread. She is essentially like Alchemists in the show FullMetal Alchemist. But she lacks THEIR power because she can’t spread and rearrange molecules of existing material not on herself. If she can do THAT, then we have our way to make her much more powerful and a B grade. But I don’t suspect she will do that, so she will likely stay a C grade focused on support. If she CAN spread, I’d have her be able to absorb elements for later use instead of her touch just being able to deconstruct and reconstruct completely. We already had Overhaul for that. But THAT material she absorbs can’t have their elements changed into other materials like she does to just her lipids while she can change their shape. Providing her more easily accessible power, but not letting her versatility get too broken. Yuga Aoyama Hero Name: Can’t Stop Twinkling Quirk: Navel Laser Grade: C Hero Class: ? For a long time I thought Aoyama was the weakest character of the 41. Not in quirk but DEFINITELY in performance. He rarely acts without the help of others, and his actions make it difficult to classify him as ANY hero class. He rarely acts to help others for rescue, he’s shown to not be very bright as one of the worst performers in midterms and seems to have no detective traits, there’s not a TRACE of containment for him, and he genuinely seems to dislike combat. Whenever the chips are down or he’s being tested he is hiding, and when he DOES need get the call to action it takes a LOT of convincing. He seems MOST interested in the stage show performance of being a hero or rather BEING a performer. He’s just a guy enjoying himself. And although a light cannon is strong, when you can only do so much to aim while in use and he telegraphs his attacks SO MUCH, it’s essentially don’t stand directly in front of him and that’s all you have to worry about. Which is a HEFTY downside to his quirk. He may have fallen into the trap All-Might warned of in season 4 of being too reliant on support gear too. You gotta be able to know what to do if gear breaks down, and recognize the faults of the gear. And Aoyama doesn’t. His choice of armor for a costume should slow him down since he’s not going to be using his laser for movement again very often. But he did well. He can spread, his stamina is much better, he was keeping up with his classmates in speed at least, so his armor might not be slowing him down anymore. But unless he can be more omnidirectional, he’s going to be quite stuck for a long time. He’s got potential depending how they make his armor in the future, but the quirk itself is honestly not going to be reaching much more power even if he gains the stamina to use it much longer. The fact that it’s his naval is just such a bad spot for his quirk and there’s so little work around. He TRIES funneling to other spots but chose his knees and his shoulders with his suit. OTHER very telegraphed spots on the body. If he could manifest hand, eye, or mouth lasers THEN he’d be a bigger contender. He is one of the best at looking fabulous. For that he can’t be denied. Toru Hagakure Hero Name: Invisible Girl Quirk: Invisibility Grade: D Hero Class: Rescue/Detective Now she has no real way to weaponize her quirk, and I don’t think she’ll be able to spread her quirk beyond her body. (Which would be CRAZY and broken. I think there’s a power from the show RWBY that does that) But having numerous ways for her body to effect light is quite interesting. She could conceivably be a mirror move counter. But all her power in the future is pretty much ONLY going to be physical combat. She doesn’t have to attack from behind, and even if you know what direction she’s in, you’ll never have any idea how she’s moving or if she’s a martial artist, what her patterns of fighting really are. Which she used a lot of today. Even without full training to utilize it. She has to learn how to be quiet to REALLY be effective. Her screaming is why she got caught at all. I’d recommend her getting clothes made out of her hair and having her boots with a type of padding that muffles her footsteps. Maybe cover some recording devices and cameras in her hair for surveillance. And I’d look for ways for her to get covert gear like Metal Gear Solid stuff. And I’m sure with the new ways of impacting light as well. She should have PLENTY of tools, but her specialties will be out of combat. She is weak to anyone with decent defense, people with heightened senses (outside vision), environment changers, and speedsters, and let’s not forget the problem of friendly fire. High stealth doesn’t help against a lot of them and it can REALLY cost her in a mistake. She’s a lot more technical than she seems since she HAS to have her tools be as invisible as she is to be top of the line effective. Fumikage Tokoyami Hero Name: Tsukoyomi Quirk: Dark Shadow Grade: A Hero Class: Combat/Rescue/Containment Best for last. Team’s MVP. I don’t think I need to work hard to sell what Tokoyami can do. He can fly, he’s got close combat, ranged attack, be a grapple, AND of course there’s the beast mode when he’s at maximum power. (Which is admittedly slower, but that can change if he controls it better. I’d be crazy to not say maximum dark shadow could level a city. We all know it DEFINITELY could based on the camp attack. It just can’t do it literally because cities are always well lit.) Tokoyami DOES need to buff up a bit in case Dark Shadow ISN’T out since it takes a second for him to take on his variety of different shapes. (Ectoplasm was capitalizing that Tokoyami can’t fight easily on his own and essentially didn’t even guard himself whenever Dark Shadow flew off.) Other than that, it’s all more nuanced control. Take advantage of passing clouds, bursting through the smallest shadows to gain more speed, and my personal favorite, actually get some light gear. This is a REALLY weird thing to say since it’s his weakness, but if the angle is correct, he should have 2 shadows to work with. (Think like walking under a street lamp at night. There’s very few moments you don’t have two shadows.) And that doubles EVERYTHING. Have a long range shadow AND a bruiser shadow, or lean harder into one. Taking this route, the only thing he can’t have is 2 maximum dark shadows. As that’s TOTAL darkness required. There’s still a variety of other shapes he can explore. Dark Fallen Angel is a really unique one but we’ve seen shields against Bakugo, we’ve seen him swirl around, but it would be cool if he used Dark Shadow like elastic. If he reaches his target he can jump and get snapped to where Dark Shadow is. His possibilities are entirely on Tokoyami’s own creativity.

Manga Fukidashi's quirk reminds of character from Fairy Tail, named Levy.. She used magic called Solid Script, that materialized whatever word she wrote as a 3d object; with properties of the word she wrote. For example, if she wrote the word FIRE, the word would appear, made out flames.

Shemage name and look are very clever, obviously like the Shimeji mushroom and her costume is like a toadstool but she also looks a bit like a witch so a She Mage

As much as I like the idea for this season, I completely forgot how many flashbacks they had. This first half could have been pretty fun as a couple of episodes refresher/class B intro if they cut down on the excessive nature of the flashbacks and characters over describing things. But man, the amount it drags from that can really kill the excitement about the actual cool stuff that happens in this arc for me. (Also I am the type of person to cringe from the weird way anime can sometimes do dialog during fights so this arc is particularly rough)

As much as I like Yaoyorozu I can't consider this a victory for her. She clearly lost. Kendo and her team had plans to counter every single strategy Yaoyorozu came up with until the very end. I wouldn't be surprised if Kendo exists precisely from the author's desire to make amends about his mistakes with Yaoyorozu. Because Kendo is very clearly everything that Yaoyorozu was supposed to be, but actually working well: Kendo has a quirk way better suited for combat, high intelligence just like her but with better physical abilities than Yaoyorozu to back it up and has skills as a natural leader among her class (unlike Yaoyorozu where Deku and Iida are always take the role of the voice of the class). On the other hand Kendo highly respected in her own class. Which was probably the plan with Yaoyorozu but the author realized how incredibly weak her quirk actually was (she literally has wearing clothes as a weaknes and not even becoming the nudist hero Yaoyorozu Momo would help her to stand a chance againts villains) and ended up with a character that isn't really suited to be a hero at all and that probably would've worked beter as just merely a support hero creating objects for the heroes that can actually fight. Characters like Shinso and Aizawa have ways to nerf opponents with enhanced physical abilities (like super strength, defense or speed and instant activation long range attacks) that are stronger than them just by looking or talking to them and their quirks work on long range and with multiple enemies at once too. And Mirio works because he's pretty much untouchable and can use his quirk to move in a way that makes him far more agile. And all of them have significantly better fighting skills.Yaoyorozu doesn't get any of that. And we have seen already like 3 entire training arcs for class 1-A aimed to the improvement of their skills and quirks and she still doesn't stand a chance againts anyone. That's why all her fights are always team fights along people with quirks far better suited for combat and why they always need to justify how she technically "won" even when she clearly didn't.

this battle was pretty controversial since the mushroom attack was technically against the rules since it was so dangerous. For example Tokoyami could have easily won the fight if he let Dark Shadow go all out but didn't since it was too dangerous

I noticed a lot of reactors tend to forget the shows they're watching. I think it's just difficult to retain information from a bunch of shows in a short period of time. Cork the job?😅

I feel like the show glossed over Mushroom Girl's actual murder attempt and just swept it under the rug. I get that you have to try your hardest to get better at something and that she had an antidote, but that was still *way* too risky and she was the only one who got close to actually *seriously* injuring someone. And she was honestly way too gleeful about that whole situation.

"Do you think he'll need a translator?" This is the kind of writing I can't stand in this show. That's not a funny joke because the answer is, objectively, no. There is no reason, at all, for him to need one, because his power's effect is not dependent upon whether other people understand the words he is using (and they are obviously referring to his power, as there has been no indication of anyone else being more fluent in English than he is except perhaps All Might who has been to America before.) It's just as stupid as the "he's using more than 100% of his power!" dialogue from season 1. No, he wasn't, because that isn't a thing you can do. By definition, if it is a thing you are capable of doing, it is within 100% or less of your power. This anime has some of the worst dialogue I've ever seen. The show has its cool moments, but that crap irks me every time.

Ok first Montana having SUCH an issue with Ms. Midnight is honestly more cringe than the exaggeration of the character. Second just wanna make it clear kindos plans failed the only reason they won was because the shroom girl took it upon herself to pull out the toxins. Kindo lost but her team didn't she even says so herself

Bro these matches feel way too long.

This arc is alot of fun but I did not like the way this fight ended, yes their supposed to treat each other like villians but it's still only a training match at school. The fact that none of the teachers present objected to such a dirty and potentially fatal tactic is extremely out of charachter espiecally for Aizawa and All Might. Thankfully the rest of this does'nt pull this type of thing again but good god was this irritating.
