Yeah, as a weapon, though, it is at least *believable* as our most powerful infantry weapon. Though, it wasn't 80% armor penetration, it was 80% of what the armor effectively negated.

Yeah, It sounds like we could *massacre* the xeno bastards just with current-day tech. The story takes place a few hundred years in the future though, imagine the kind of pain a standard infantry weapon might be able to inflict then... Those troop ships were probably *allowed* to land on Earth, just so people could see the look on their soldiers' faces as they collectively shit themselves at the first volley from defending forces.

@@BrazenBard If we go by current progression, it's likely we'd be less about slug size, and more about slug velocity. Can you imagine the kind of kinetic energy a half-inch slug would carry at 0.1c? It'd probably be an even smaller slug, maybe something like a 5.56, but at significant fractions of light-speed, a 5.56mm shard of tungsten alloy would probably go through not just these xenos' armor, but likely the fucking ships they flew in on.

In the background 10 alien armored vehicles smoking wrecks and couple of them having turrets blown few dozen meters away, while M2's drop all the alien dropships and fighter bomber escorts and 5.56 miniguns wipe rest of the infantry.... "consider your self lucky you got knocked out in the first volley or you would be like your buddies over there, now off to POW camp with you" *grabs alien with one hand and carries it to dog transport cage on back of the hover Humvee* On the background you can hear AA and tank crews muttering about over penetration issues.

1911A1 isn't the model from WWII, that's the updated version that came about because the Marines refused to adopt the M9 Beretta back in '85

The A1 variant came about because there were issues with the version adopted in 1911. Most notably that the hammer liked to pinch the web of the wielder's thumb when it cycled. You're probably thinking of the M45, a version of the 1911 that the Marines developed in the '80s for their Special Operations Command.

I've 'stood the line' against protesters and I can assure you that it is not a pleasant experience. The number one rule is to never, ever get separated and taken by the crowd. Because if that happens the violence escalation inherent in mobs means that you are going to be - if you're lucky - severely beaten. The normal human restraints are not there when part of a violent mob and they will escalate violence if they see a helpless victim. They will kill you - but you can't kill them.

Tear gas can be combatted by a bottle of water, and a street con. As well as with gas masks. Riot police armer is designed to handle a beaten, and presumably a bullet, or 2. However, they can't handle being on fire, or stab with spears. The formation they take is designed to capture people. It is a 3 line set up, sometimes more, sometimes less, and sometimes with vehicles, and others with horses. However, the concept is the same, the first line let's certain people in, and the second line deals with arresting the offender. The third line either throws the offenders in a truck, or replace the second line as the second throws the offenders in a truck. The line set up is my assumption, but I wouldn't be surprised if something similar happens. In regards to unlawful protest, at any point a protest can be considered a unlawful protest. Even if the protest doesn't become a riot. As you can see, this can lead to abuse of power. So, there is that.

As a civie I'd say unlawful protest is at the point of damaging property or physically hurting people (blocking roadways might also apply, though most protests still permit at least emergency vehicles access). There are countries that make you apply for a permit to conduct a protest. Those countries have problems.

Oh no, humans are logical. The problem is that every logical process is based on a set of axioms, which are basically assumptions. Ie, if X then Y. The problem arises is that all too few people double check to make sure their axioms are actually true, or are still true.

.45 ACP has a lot of ass but armor penetration was never its strong side. If a centuries old handgun cartridge had 80% armor penetration, then those invaders are in for a very nasty surprise

You misunderstood. They said it's "within 80% capacity" of their armor, meaning that its impact is 20% below the minimum needed to pierce their armor. That's why they then said their soldiers can walk through a storm of them unharmed.

@@ChrissieBear I think you're missing what Edim is saying. A .45 ACP is a backup weapon, not a primary and it's very likely those guns were loaded with hollow points which are meant to limit penetration in soft tissue (among other attributes). If a sidearm not intended for use against armor can pierce 80% of the enemy's armor, that means that just about every service rifle (or hunting rifle of a substantial caliber be it .223, .30-30, .243, .270, .308, .30-06, etc) will probably defeat said armor. And that's not getting into dedicated armor piercing ammunition that the various military forces have available for use.

@@ChrissieBear according to the ballistics calculator, 45 ACP is about 350 foot-pounds at normal range. 5.56 is nearing 600 foot-pounds at the same working range. A more powerful hunting round, or larger military weapon will be about 700. If 350 is approaching the 80% mark, then they are about to have a very unpleasant time.

Did a quick Google search on the M1911. "The pistol served as the standard-issue sidearm for the United States Armed Forces from 1911 to 1985. It was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War" so given the context of the story I'd say they gave the Xeno's were working on information a few centuries out of date
