Toriyama was a very private person, and I personally haven't even heard his voice and I've been watching Dragon Ball for over a decade. It's understandable that you wouldn't recognize his name, but when you find out who he was everything changes. Rest in peace Akira Toriyama, you were the legend that forged legends.

Everybody loves Akira Toriyama for DB and DBZ but don't forget his other creations, Dragon Quest / Dragon Warrior (for the Nes), and the XB 360 Exclusive game "Blue Dragon". and "Sand Land" (manga) He gave up drawing Manga after he lost his favourite pen after finishing up Sand Land and the new one didn't feel the same way. So he used that as an excuse to for hardly drawing any manga (A Very Toriyama thing to say xD) He revealed this while giving his thoughts about the Sand Land manga getting an anime film adaptation.

I remember my first exposure to Dragonball; Nintendo Official Magazine was doing a spread on Japanese-only fighting games and there were a couple of Dragonball for the SNES. So they did a background on each of the characters and my first sight of Son Goku was in the centre pages. I now own the entire Dragonball and Dragonball Z series (Manga dub editions).

At first, I couldn't believe it. It was exactly the day his death was announced. I was doing a quick check on KZfaq, and then, a comment notification saying "RIP Akira Toriyama" appeared from nowhere. I thought "Akira Toriyama WHAT?!?", so I headed to Google News, which unfortunately proved my suspicions, that he had been dead for almost a week (however the fact that there was so much silence about the Dragon Ball franchise except for theories, recaps, etc. gave that stinky sensation), but the way Japan's privacy laws are... Anyway, Dragon Ball was one of the first animes I watched and loved since I was a child. Toriyama did an extremely excellent job by making such a masterpiece series. I miss him already.

It's a very, VERY strange situation we find ourselves in. Many of us have never seen the man. Some of us might not even know his name. But the moment it's announced he passed away and that he created our favourite story, it's like reverse amnesia, suddenly everything connects and we realise how important this man was and because of his private nature, it seemed so understated. I've always been aware of him, seem a couple of pictures, but it was only after he passed away I looked at an interview of him from 1983 and I realised I'd never heard him speak or even seen him in motion. He seemed like such a cool guy. Didn't want the fame, just wanted to create.
