- China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is being countered by the United States not through competing infrastructure projects but through a global-spanning campaign of subversion, sabotage, and terrorism;
- The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has been hit particularly hard by US-backed terrorism for years including open US government efforts to carve off Baluchistan province from Pakistan to deny CPEC a terminal port at Gwadar;
- Between 2011-2012 US government officials openly called for an “independent” Baluchistan while pumping money through the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) into opposition groups including media and so-called “human rights” organizations;
- US-backed separatists have since regularly targeted Chinese engineers and their Pakistani counterparts and Pakistani security with armed violence;
- US-backed separatists have also targeted the Chinese ambassador to Pakistan on at least one occasion;
- Because the US cannot directly attack China’s BRI worldwide, it does through through proxies and is yet another illustration of the role terrorism plays in advancing US foreign policy objectives and the threat the US poses to international peace, prosperity, and stability;

The United States (US) says that it supports Baluchistan’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence from Pakistan. The US will always use terrorism, when it can’t defeat its opponent in a fair competition. US’ exceptionalism lies in its ability to carry out terrorism all over the world with impunity. We have seen that in the Nord Stream pipelines, in Gaza, and in the attack in Moscow, just to name a few. The US also alleges to support Taiwan’s right to self-determination and independence from the People’s Republic of China. It is important to understand that both Baluchistan and Taiwan are parts of their respective nations. The US, therefore, is in violation of international law by interfering in another nation’s sovereignty. But the US’ priority of benefitting its own oligarchs far exceeds that of complying with international law! Thus, the US is following its own so-called “Rules Based Order”. That could best be illustrated by Puerto Rico’s case, which is definitely not a part of the US. Puerto Rico, on the contrary, has been a US colony for the past 125 years! The US has consistently refused to comply with 42 UN’s resolutions demanding that it immediately return Puerto Rico’s sovereignty to the Puerto Ricans. Where are the US Congress’ bills to force the US government to comply with international law? US “democracy” is only used as a smoke screen for imperialism!

Who could possibly be against the building infrastructures in Pakistan? Especially ones built under joint ventures between China and Pakistan. A case study is Gwadar, a poor small town located along the coastline in the dry western region of Pakistan. The lack of fresh water, roads, electricity, telecom, healthcare facility, and basic education in Gwadar has destined the locals to a life of hardship and misery. Several years ago, China and Pakistan formed a joint venture to develop the Gwadar port and associated infrastructures such as oil pipelines, roads, schools , desalination plant, and electricity. As of today, China has constructed a school, some basic housing, and a desalination plant as gifts to the locals. China stands to gain an oil pipeline that transfer oil from the Gwadar port to Xinjiang, and thereby bypass the Malacca Strait, controlled by the U.S. Navy. China also built a major highway connecting the Gwadar port to the Karakoram Highway, an important arterial highway linking trade between Pakistan and China. When fully complete, the Gwadar port will generate prosperity, employment , harmony, peace, and uplift the standard of living for all the people of Western Pakistan. What can possibly go wrong? The only problem is the USA doesn’t want China to have access to Middle East oil through Gwadar. After all, the U.S. Navy has an important job to do presiding over the Malacca Strait in the name of “ Freedom of Navigation.” .

Good analysis, Brian. May I just add one point you didn't mention. In the 90s when I often traveled through Pakistan to China, I was told by a retired government official that Baluchistan never paid any tax to the government. The tax they collected, they kept to themselves.

I was in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan and other asian countries between 1971 to1975(the road) . The iranians 's SAVACK tortured and killed them ,they were free and integraded in Afghanistan, tortured and killed in Pakistan. The Balouchies are great horses riders they can repair any old vans , at the time that i stayed with them they already wanted to be indépendant. To me they were generous with their hospitalty .Savack was th Shah's secret police backed by CIA, same thing's with Ali Butto's regime; CIA was already crawling in Afghanistan

I worked in Pakistan years ago, near Karachi in the south - there was a lot of armed violence, I asked the locals why - they said somebody would turn up one night with a pickup full of guns and ammunition and tell the locals they were going to be attacked by the 'others'.

I think people are forgetting one thing, Pakistan in particular doesn't have a great track record of protecting it's minorities, it's one of the reasons why East Pakistan got separated into Bangladesh The same exists for Baluchistan, the Pakistanis want to impose Urdu. And since there's BRI projects in Baluchistan, these militants often target them too as well as pakistani soldiers
