WOW!! a stunning nocturne...sooo much easier to get fine lines with the dry pastel pigment. I may have to switch from oils to pastels.!!!

Wow wow wow another amazing painting and video! When you put on the first strokes of the very pale yellow color, the painting became magic and came to life! Loved your story about meeting Terry Ludwig, and like you, I’m crazy for his soft pastels!

Thoroughly enjoyed your video using Terry Ludwig pastels. I just ordered my very first set of Terry's pastels (Summer Tropical Beaches) and cannot wait to try them out. Hi Marla, You are my new idol with painting in pastels. I have been painting with more exact details and am just mesmerized with your more loose painting. I love the introduction of different hues, not just greens for a tree, etc. Love your painting. It is WOW !! And I enjoy TL's pastels.

Ludwig Pastels are awesome. I have many of the sets many years ago, remember the early two turquoise sets cool tone and the separate warm tone set (I treasure them). I eventually acquired the full set when the line was restructured from Dakota.

Thank you for this video. Your work is beautiful. I currently paint with oils and acrylics but I am becoming very interested in pastels. It would be totally new for me so I am not sure the best way to begin. I will continue to look at videos for help before I make the purchase of pastels. I love what I’m seeing so far. I’m just not that in love with oils. Acrylics are more just for fun to me. Pastels I have not ventured into yet, but here goes!

Love it! I love to watch and see how a blob of dark and you just barely touch it with a lighter color and my eyes see the tree with the light shining through. I use cheaper pastels and so far everything I do looks like a blob. I have not used sanded paper, so I am thinking that may help. I think pastels are the hardest medium to control because more is not better. Is there any surface that pastels should not be used on like canvas, even if a sand ground is used? Do you use an ionizer to keep dust from being airborne? I saw the video on making a dust trapper, I made a small one with a cheerios box that I cut up. Thank you for posting!

Marla thank you for sharing this beautiful painting with us. I have to have this set of little beauties. You have done a great job. I do have a question...at what point will you put these pastels with your others out on your table, or will you keep them as a specialized set. I would probably keep them separate from my others but that is because I would be afraid that it would be impossible for me to locate the nocturnals when I need them. Thanks again

Good video but these are out of my price range just now. What do you think of the Rembrandt brand? I have heard they are firmer or harder, but some of the best quality and non hazardous pigments. Have you used them? now or in the past?

Hello, I live in France and I ordered this box because I had never tested this brand. to my surprise, it is written on the box that these pastels contain products deemed carcinogenic in the usa and therefore very dangerous. so I'm a little afraid to use them.

Every time I try to do this with landscapes they turn to crap! Ha! I have no problem with watercolor or gouache but pastels? Yuck I need so much help. Especially getting the negative shapes. I am horrible at it with this medium. I also find the real soft pastels I have I have difficulty getting a very light layer. I do think I need to slow down though too.
