You'll never realize just how much or how little you know until you take on a daunting task. You guys got this!

DO NOT adjust the drive chains until you take them off, and soak them in a tub of diesel for a few days. Then reinstall, then adjust, then apply chain lube. Make sure you have a quality chain breaker. After re installing the chain, it may have more play then when you removed and soaked it. Use the chain breaker to remove one or more links to make up for the wear and stretch.

Don't use superglue to secure the lens, it's too brittle for the locomotive vibrations, clear silicone RTV would be a better choice.

I worked at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC from the age of 15-18 as Assistant to the Master Mechanic while in High School. They have a yellow US Navy 44 ton switcher they use to move stuff around on the site. Very powerful little locomotives.

The 50 Ton GE is finally coming along nicely.👍👍👍 It's great to actually see it moving Freight back and forth on the East Terminal Railway. Of course, I'm not sure how many of you will consider one cup of coffee on the back of the engine being freight!☕☕😁

I would recommend a small amount of clear silicone sealant, like the white bath sealant but clear. Here in the UK you can get it from builders merchants, hardware shops ect. A small amount around where the glass seats onto the metal frame if the meter this will hold the glassing also acting as a water sealant and give some flexibility and will be easy to remove if it is needed to work on in the future. The instant glue will work but any movement the glass will probably brake and you would not be able to remove the glass without breaking it, it's also not sealed against water and moisture. The silicone sealant will be useful in other uses on the diesel water and electrical sealing protection for instance. If I lived in the US near you I would lend a hand. Thanks for the video.

I know what you are going through, I ought a 1952 GE 44 tonnes as a standby engine for the tourist vs I volunteered at in WVA. It took about 2 months to check all the wiring, change oil and clean the engine compartment. The engines are Car D17000 and run realy well, it has 4 traction motars. Two months after we got her running she resqued the steam engine and train.

I have operated a GE45ton center cab for many years and you will enjoy it more as you get the feel of it - also would not hurt to put fresh crater grease in the traction motors after you inspect them

Really nice video! Also an update about my railroad I have narrow down what locomotive would get. And saving up money to purchase the 5 miles of rail and also I'm currently going to school at an aerospace academy in Central Florida. Learning about how to fix electronics, leadership and maintain your aircraft.

Good to see some of the rail & wheel surface getting a polished shine to them from the back & forth trips! Can't wait till you get to polish a shine on the rest of your rails! I was curious how the temp of each engine is holding since the radiator vent at each end appeared to be closed in this summer time weather. (I would guess since mainly using low idle, probably is not an issue.)

It's nice to see things coming together for the ETR. What I'd really love to see a complete tour (walk or drone fly over) of the ETR right of way. Also if you need a security specialist to look after the security of your property I think I may know a guy. Cause hey every railroad has railway police don't they?

I was on a SSBN crew that took three days to get to Scotland on a C141 that the Air Force took five air bases to repair the air plane. this happened in the last 80s.

I have some mobile VHF 2-way radios (2 Motorola CDM1250's, Radius M1225, and a Radius CM300) if you guys are interested. I can reprogram them to your custom specifications or just program in all of the AAR allocated frequencies. These radios were pulled from hi-railers and MOW equipment. The radios are FCC narrowband and part 90 approved as well. Also it looks like your locomotive has a UHF antenna on it, that will have to be changed out to a VHF one unless you want to use UHF but then you may run into a compatibility issue when operating with other railroads.

Glad to finally see a Newer video. Looking forwards to the next one.. Any idea on when you might be able to store a car or two on one of the sidings. In fact ae the sidings clear for a visual of your terminus? Oh, wait you had to add some timber for a switch...

I think it might be advisable to change that whole stack of rubber isolators on the gaer case, I have seen gear cases fractured by loose/worn/missing isolators previously.

Love the humor in the videos, the radio phone call made me laugh, that was something my old man used to do and people would fall for it. Cool to see it up and running! The US armed forces, conveniently, also owns some older GE switchers, so bringing in your special guest that's former active duty USAF is fun in two ways.

Question - please tell me if I'm wrong... Should the reverser be the other way around? I've driven a few rail vehicles, and the reverser on those always points in the direction of travel. Maybe it's backwards as well? Maybe it's a state or region thing? In any case, love your work, great to see you rolling! 🙂

Nothing wrong with just a little while smoke if you’re idling a lot and then ramping up the rpm’s especially for how old that baby is- Coming from a large ship mechanic. Would love to see a tune up/valve adjustment or checking injectors. Maybe try adding some injector cleaner to the fuel or just keep running fresh fuel through it along with refreshing some areas. Cool though. The rail side of the house is interesting to me. Great video ETR!

Were the load meters reading backwards because the batteries were originally hooked with polarity reversed? Maybe it was originally correct and that is why the selector is also now backwards (you said it to go forwards you had it put it to the rear). Just a thought - great channel!

Good morning from SE Louisiana 11 Oct 21.

When the locomotive is moving, the engineers hand must always be on the brake handle in th "LAP" position. Note: The handle can only be removed in the lap position. Then, if one wants to stop or decelerate, you just give it a sip of air by moving the handle quickly to the apply position and back to lap. To the right of lap is apply. to the left of lap is release. One should not be "fanning" the brake handle by quickly moving it from apply to release repeatedly. Just maybe someday, I would enjoy a bit of throttle time there. Your 2021 is a bit of a toy next to the KLS&C 85 that I ran. She was an ex ATSF GP-7R 122 tons. 1.500hp. Then KLS&C 95 was an E-8. I can see the brakes are a fair amount different from either. Nothing that a bit of practice and run time wouldn't cure. In the Air Force, I was an "Electronic Neurosurgeon". Our office symbol was LGMD. Logistics Ground Maintenance Data. See the MD? In short, I repaired computers back in the day when that was still possible.

Glad to see THE ETR safety cone going along for another ride! Since my lofty Safety title is honorary in nature I would like to ask the rest of the ETR safety team (who REALLY know RR's) is it ok to have a red, "gas" can sitting on the loco while it is moving? Do we have less to worry about since it is not gasoline? I also love the fact the 2021 is soooooo smmmoooooothhh the coffee cup barely shakes. God Speed ETR!!

Not sure how your yard is oriented, but I think the "proper" titles to your "north/south" should be "A" end and "B" end. That's how it used to be with a caboose, anyway. It's been a few decades, but I seem to think the SW-12's were set up to simply connect/excite the system in notch 1, without taking the diesel engine off of idle. Sometimes that's all you need to move or take up slack in the cut of cars being moved.

How often do you refuel that engine and how much fuel does it hold in the tank or tanks.

Glad you figured out how to operate the train brakes. You had the independent brakes released, but as you found out, when you bail off the train brakes while they’re in emergency, they always set back up by design. After all, if you really have an emergency, you don’t want the brakes to release and stay released until you’ve resolved the problem that caused the emergency brake application to begin with. I’m used to 26L brakes and can’t say I’ve ever heard the brake positions for older brake systems. The handle positions for 26L brakes are from the left when facing the valve: release, minimum service, full service, suppression, handle off, (allows you to remove the brake handle from the valve and store it somewhere) and emergency.

When you start the engines press the start button once and don’t let go until oil pressure stops climbing. This procedure will prevent you from having sticky start contractors by having no load on the starting contractors. Pushing and releasing the starter buttons quickly is asking for trouble. I worked for years on PC, Conrail and finally Amtrak. Anything from 600 horse SW 1 switchers up to U-36B road switchers. Rated at 3600 horsepower. Food for thought

Also you may not want to adjust throttle until you get a load on it. Might be hard on motors coming in at a lower voltage under a load.

Do Not use "Crazy Glue" for your amp gauge lens... too brittle and the vibrations will only break the "weld". Use a couple of drops of Clear silicone sealer.... will absorb any vibration while holding the glass lens in place. Replace the engines with either a pair of Detroit 6-71TA's or 6-110's.... which were used in the Budd RDC's.

Do the lens housings have some sort of gasket, or O ring between the housing and the cabinet? I wonder if the right lens housing should have one, to prevent the needle from touching the lens?

I recently watched a video of still photography made in 1976 by some kids in Chicago Illinois on that video was a picture of a 50 tonner just like yours and same color, they said the locomotive was made at US Railway Equipment in Chicago there’s a chance that yours could have been made by that company

Regarding the reverse load meters: Was the polarity of the starting battery reversed? I seem to remember that may have happened at first. The battery should be positive ground. The generator uses a bit of an oddball excitation. The generators are grounded on the negative lead (through the start winding). The shunt winding for the generator connects to the positive of the generator and the negative lead is connected to the start battery negative at low throttle settings. The start battery excites the generator at low throttle and the generator is self excited at high throttle. If the battery was connected negative ground, then the excitation of the generators would be reversed. That would make the traction system excite as positive ground instead of negative ground, and the current in the traction system would be reversed. Note that the reverser direction would not change, because the current direction in the traction motors reverses in the field winding AND the armature. Either the field winding or the armature connections are reversed. Just to complicate things, one motor may have a reversed field and the other may have a reversed armature... Just speculating: When they went from 32V to 36V, the alternators may not have been available in positive ground. That could explain the meters working backwards.

So, if you go back to where the battery box was "mislabeled" I think what happened is that whoever was fixing the wiring on that thing got it backwards.

How do the engines and stuff work when the engine is working? I am asking because you said it had two engines most unties have one giant one working the whole thing. Also does it all work together since or separately with one engine or the other?

I'm about ready to try driving that big locomotive CSX leaves parked down the road from my house sometimes.

Easy fix on the needle sticking and loose glass…. Use a bit of masking tape to pull the glass outward and put a real small amount of super glue on a toothpick and put it on at 10 and 2 just before you pull the glass outward, use masking tape to hold in place for 24 hours… Your computer geek and radio man in Sherman NY. And yes I know commercial radio gear!!!!
