Automatic Tesla coil winding machine - powered by Arduino Nano. This is the first run. A secondary of 1300 turns of 0.2 mm wire on a 75 mm plastic pipe.
This is the start of a project to build "the Russian Slayer Exciter".

Looks great, well done. As I need multi-layer coils with optimal offset for density, I'm looking to build something similar that can do half width offsets at the ends in a rectangular bobbin.

This has the best wire setup I have see so far, most don't bother to straighten. I didn't recognize a single word on your machine, pretty unusual, Finnish?.
@ponttokamera
@ponttokamera 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, I thought some kind of straightening is needed. I tested it with a used wire, too, and it worked just fine. Those V Groove Bearings also keep a good tension on the wire. Yes, it's Finnish. For a moment, I considered translating the code to English, but then I just put those subtitles in the video.

His work is elegant. The machine is overly complicated. He has either not read the comments or does not read/understand English or is not interested in the viewers. However watching his machine one should be able to do the same thing without all the extra parts. If you make a roller turn in a precise rotation without jitter and feed the wire like he did, Have a counter at one end to count the turns and feed the wire carefully, with a little practice it will turn out just like his coil. In fact you dont even need a precise count of the turns. for X# of Turns, wire OD x #Xturns = length of winding. So make the tube a couple of inches longer. Use pvc tubing. Drill a hole at each end and pass the wire thru to anchor it. When it is finished Varnish the winding with several layers of varnish.

I noticed the comments, understand English, but had some other projects going on. Thank you for the comments, I appreciate them all and did never expect this video to be so popular! As said, this might be an unnecessarily complicated machine to manufacture parts to an unnecessary thing like a Tesla coil. The target was not to make a secondary coil but to make a fully automated winding machine. Just for fun! Because, why not? This is how I coiled those before, so sure I know it can be done. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7yhf9Vz1KrDd2g.html However, there are some benefits with this machine. Winding a very thin wire by hand is difficult. With the machine, it's easy. With the machine, you can also choose the gap between turns. It's not necessary to coil every turn right next to each other. For example, you could use a wire of 0.25mm and a pitch of 0.5mm to get the same result as with 0.5mm wire coiled side by side but with better isolation between turns. This is impossible to coil by hand.

I need to wind myself a coil with 11,750 turns of 0.19mm wire in order to fix a 70's Italian flip clock. Any tips as to whether I should use a pro winding machine like this or can it be done with a makeshift cordless drill setup (i.e. guide the wire by hand)? With that many turns and such a fine wire, I'm concerned about snapping the wire halfway.

Very cool project! How even does the dried resin end up being? Are those small bearings tied to a dancer? How do you control the tension?
@ponttokamera
@ponttokamera 2 жыл бұрын
The resin ended up being quite good. Only one layer and better result than with many layers of varnish. It might be even better by mixing the resin better and by removing all air bubbles with a vacuum pump, which I don't have. What do you mean by a "dancer"? You can see the "tensioning system" here at 2:00 to the left, next to the go-pro. The wire comes between a couple of soft paper towels and a piece of wood on in. It mostly holds the wire so that it does not fall off the rollers.

that's awesome but u coulda saved sooooooo much tech and time making a spring tensioned arm like a record player that gently presses against previous winding. On top of the simplicity, I feel like you're gonna get its the tightest this way. I feel like if your pitch is ever so slightly off, by the time you get to winding# 1200 it could start overlapping... My comments are not to criticize, on the contrary actually... this thing is brilliant, I actually ask cuz I'm making one now, and maybe you tried my idea to no avail? I am making mine on castors so coil diameter is easily changeable without coil needing center point. Any suggestions or ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Do you synchro step motion and rotary motion? Or you just set motion speed and rotary speed manualy ? Thank you for reply
@ponttokamera
@ponttokamera 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's synchronized. There is a Hall effect sensor next to the coiling motor gear. When a turn is detected, the stepper motor is driven according to the needed pitch. This makes it possible to freely change the coiling speed and the wire-feeding mechanism will follow. You can see the Hall-sensor at 3:55 in the video.
