The Tesla CyberTruck has a lot going on, one of the things missing is the Windshield Wipers. But what if that is on purpose. What if instead of Wiper blades, they used air knives. Tesla Cybertruck Airblades!

You can’t have a pickup truck that can’t deal with dirty environments. I doubt that an air blade could cope with mud.

Air knife approach could be it. My guess when I saw the truck was it does have a blade but it's a variation on the blade in some of Tesla's patents. They had a linear motor that allowed one blade to cover a much bigger area. The wipers were probably just left out for the prototype. But who knows.

As you say.. Air knives are not new. But they loose efficiency after a short distance. The windscreen is very large and I think it would only only clear about 20% of the area.

That would be the key problem to solve, maybe they've cracked that or that's where the hydrophobic surface helps? I don't know how it would handle mud, dust bugs etc though.

Jack Rickards on EVTV covers the Cyber Truck very well - The windscreen and side windows are "Transparent Aluminium" not glass - in its manufacture the surface is super polished and the surface is super hard (similar to Sapphire) will not pit or scratch or scour (By Sand or whatever) , it is even better than RainX in that it is a smoother surface that is permanent and does not need to be refreshed. Not Transparent Aluminum" used by Military, Nasa and Space X and more than likely Tesla's roof tiles is called ALON tm, Chemical formula is Aluminum, Oxygen, Nitrogen. - is transparent to IR and is 98% transparent to visible light (much better than glass)

Please remember guys this is an affordable truck. The basic model isn't gonna have some crazy expensive windshield material or coating to rely on for clearing the windshield. It's gonna have a mechanical wiper and motor. My guess 2 blades and arms. It has to work everytime. A truck will be used in harsh environments where the wipers have to work.

typically i would agree with you, but when the tesla models S, X, and Y were revealed they all had wipers and mirrors. Tesla as a company has a really good track record for unveiling their vehicles as nearly 100% finished products. In many other cases with other car brands that is clearly not the case. The only reason the MK2 Roadster, semi truck, and Cybertruck dont have them is because there might be some back room dealing with US DOT and Manufacturers (not just Tesla) in respects of updating certain standards for upcoming vehicles. I'm just spit balling, but you never know there might be some truth to this. I guess we will see when the Roadster comes out next year.

Dyson hand dryers are called "Air Blades". They us a narrow high speed blast of air to blow water away. But they won't work over the long length of a windscreen. I'd imagine they would work with wiper arms but that's defeating the point. Who knows. Hydrophobics are ok if the glass is fundamentally so. Coatings will wear over time and nobody will want to replace the screen because the coating failed.

And now imagine you are driving in a winter (not california, some place where there is a winter) and it is thaw after a heavy snow storm. Very typical when warm air mass does wonder into the winter wonderland. The road conditions are 2" of sludge and snowbanks producing poodles on a road. Now you are driving 30 and a 18wheeler comes towards you. I am telling you from experience, it takes several seconds for wipers and washer to restore any of visibility after the shitwave covers your car. Would airblade prevent all that sludge and bud and water from falling on your winshield? Unless it is converted jet fighter engine they use to blow airfields clean, no. And I sincerely doubt it would handle chunks of mud that could land on a windshield like proper washer and wiper would (struggling and smearing mud all arround). Though if all you do is commuting from suburban to downtown LA and back, that might work great.

In my opinion Cybertruck is a masterpiece of bold innovation and design that only Tesla is brave enough to attempt. I think is looks much better than run of the mill pickups. One of the main reasons that the Cybertruck can be produced at a lower cost relates to how the body is produced. The stainless-steel body can be formed by simply folding the sheet metal without the necessity for expensive stamping machines. Also, the absence of paint results in significant cost savings. A paint shop cost 200 million dollars in initial capital expenditure and has additional ongoing expenses. The painting and drying of is time consuming and is often a bottle neck in production. Cybertruck eliminates this cost and bottle neck. The exoskeleton design was necessary to decrease the weight of the Cyber truck so that it is not heavier than the conventional pickup truck despite its heavy batteries. Other electric pickup makers will have a hard time competing with this design in terms of specifications and cost. The bizarre appearance of the Cybertruck is a necessity to keep costs low for these specifications. The price and specifications of this vehicle are so compelling that it is a viable alternative to a conventional car. I would normally never buy a pickup truck, but I will be getting the Cybertruck as my daily driver. It costs the same as my Tesla Model 3 and has so much more capability and room. Should be great in heavy snow and won’t rust from the salt used on streets in the winter in the Chicago area where I live. Won’t need to worry that one bird shit will stain the car forever. The only downside when compared to a car is its large size which might cause issues with parking in some areas. The pickup truck will use more electricity per mile driven then the car but the additional cost difference is not as significant as with internal combustion pickup trucks. Once the general public understands this, there might be a whole new segment of population that will opt for the cyber truck instead of a car. Power outage in the house? Run an extension cord to Cybertruck and get by with powering essentials like phones, broadband modems, and rechargeable led lighting. You could even cook with an instant pot or induction cooker. Also, Elon confirmed on twitter the car may have a solar option for the bed cover that can add some range when the car is parked in the sun. I don’t care that other people may not like how this looks. If they want something that looks like a regular pickup they will pay more and get less. Not a choice that I would make. I would like to see this low-cost polygon body concept scaled down to a mid-sized SUV with three rows of seats with the last two rows foldable and removable. This would be a better alternative to a family car than a pickup truck. Scaling this down to an urban hatch back the size of a Honda Fit should allow an EV with a range of 200 miles for low $20Ks in couple of years.

Yeah that's one hell of an air blade on that massive piece of glass. Manufacturers already work to use airflow to clear the windshield, but you're still going to need wipers. Maybe they could work together in some way. Someone else mentioned the patent I believe they filed for using electro-magnetized rails instead of a standard wiper motor. One can imagine a blade anchored at top and bottom that would run across the glass without the need for two massive blades and a heavy motor.

I'm not sure how anyone can be so sure it has no windshield wipers. They could easily be hiding behind a hinged panel at the base of the windshield. Making it cover the entire windshield may not be the easiest thing but neither is it something extremely difficult to make an articulated wiper arm that will cover it all. The only way an air knife will work is if it is actually mounted on a wiper arm and moves along the windshield close to it. An air knife is only effective for a few cm (an inch or two). One at the base of the windshield will not keep it dry unless you put an insane amount of power into the air knife. You wouldn;t want to use more power to dry the windshield than actually driving. In other words the air knife could replace the rubber blade of the conventional wiper blade but all the rest would have to remain.

The cybertruck, in it's current form, will never sell to the masses, only to enthusiasts ~ it is therefore highly unlikely that the truck you see now will ever be mass produced. What will most likely be mass produced is a vehicle that resembles a normal truck as THAT is the only thing with proven sales. In the end two things are certain: any vehicle Tesla has ever produced has taken longer and cost more than they promised ~ so will it be with this one.
