Thanks for this well done review of the two wheel options. My model 3 is on order and this confirms my decision to go with the aero wheels. I went with the standard plus because it was the most efficient, and so it's fitting to go with the most efficient wheels. I went with the gray color as well, and I think the darker rims match that color well.

Do they really last longer? The contact patch is smaller on the 18" as the 18s have a smaller tread width before the tires starts to crown, so the loading per unit area is higher on the 18s. This is one reason why the 18" run a higher pressure than the 19's.

Even a track, the aero wheels aren't any worse. You would want something sticky of course but the degree to which wheel diameter being bigger helps track times is largely over blown, and often smaller/lighter wheels are better overall, assuming you have similarly good tires on in each case. I used to autocross competitively and usually the way we made tire decisions was to figure out what is the stickiest tire allowed by the rules, in the biggest size we can stuff in the car, under the rules. whatever wheel diameter that ends up being, you use.
@brandongahm6208

now i used to do this on my 01 mercury. i lowered the air pressure in the tire from 32 psi to 26 psi. this gave a much better ride at the cost of fuel. its a pretty big hit, nearly 20% increase in fuel consumption. i don't do it anymore because i need to save gas as much as i can. but the day i added pressure you could feel the road get harder. you can also airdown if you want better traction. this only works to a point if you air down too much you will just destroy the tire but the manufacturer designs them with a little leeway. keep in mind i have the standard tire for my car. they can go upto 40 psi but the door sticker is recommending 30 psi.

I have the 20" wheels on my P3D, unfortunately slid into a curb at 5-10mph and curbed the one wheel pretty badly when we had some snow on the ground. Learned just how bad summer tires are in snow. Ordered 18" sport wheels from tsportline with dws06 tires and will be selling my 20" set. Yeah they look good, but i've always been more about function over form and for north east climate 18"s with all seasons is far more functional. Bonus is i'll be getting about 22 miles of range efficiency vs the 20s, dropping 8lbs per corner.

I did the same switch today on my 2022 M3LR. I don’t actually feel it’s that much quieter or smoother. What was completely unanticipated and most noticeable is how much quicker the acceleration feels. I have acceleration boost and I don’t actually feel the car got faster when I got the boost but now it’s a hoot. I test drove the Highland M3P last week and knew it was quicker but decided it isn’t that much better so I’m keeping my current car but holy smokes that seat-of-the-pants difference just narrowed noticeably after adding 18”

I've never understood the fad of going to thin tires. The whole point of tires is to insulate you from the road. Putting rubber bands over metal rims has never made any sense to me, especially if you lose efficiency (as on the Tesla) going to the "sport" wheels! Perhaps Tesla suspension is built better, but for most cars (usually trucks) with the rubber band tires they DO NOT IMPROVE ANYTHING! (Because the suspension of most vehicles is the "weakest link", and no improvement in handling would be noticed.)
@tedgore5365

Some people prefer form vs function. It's just simply a style thing. You don't have to understand it.
@bengrizzlyadams6187
@bengrizzlyadams6187 4 жыл бұрын
Well lower shoulders give you less lateral movement when cornering hard, it is an improvement with or without the suspension. Granted than for everyday use you have a harsher ride and more possibilities of buckling your alloys on a pothole at speed. But as far as I am concerned factor that you have a car with figures comparable to a top end super car, so handling would be my priority, not so much range. Now that is so cheap or free to recharge.

Great video! I think the original Sport 19" wheels looked better, but the 18" look pretty good. I have the Sport wheels, and the thing I don't like about them is that you can curb them easily. The 18" wheels hands-down will provide more range, that is just simple physics, but the ride depends on the height of the tire wheel well (the sidewall height). I think when I have to replace my tires, I will put 19" tires with a higher sidewall height on them to see if this affects the ride. I like the Sport wheels, but I am considering changing them to a different type.

Sometimes Tesla really needs to move a car. Under typical circumstances they will not budge but except for software (you can get FSD removed from an inventory car if you don't want it or conversely add it). if they really want to move cars, i.e. end of quarter... And let's say you ordered or want a white one (current free color) but red is available. They might offer you a red and comp you the $2000 price increase. Having gone through 2 orders, I had software removed and additional $700 discount LR RWD in April 2019 (new inventory). In June 2019, I picked up a white LR RWD with comped 19" wheel ( new inventory).

I'm really curious why Tesla would agree to discount you $1500 and revert the car back to 18" Aeros. That's a double loss for them. They can't do anything with used set of 19" sports and they still have to give you a new set of 18's. Tesla comped me 19's which I was more than happy to take but you essentially got a double comp.

Interesting. I'm looking at either the SR+ or the performance but some negative things are said about the 20s. I wonder if the 3P performance is completely wasted on more efficient softer tires. If their grip is too poor for 3 seconds. Or if I can live with the 20s. I seem to recall someone saying you can ask for 19s on the 3P at the dealer even though it's not an option on the site. There shouldn't be these off menu things. It's bad practice.

I love the sport wheels. But if you have family members that drive your car and could curb your wheels, you should use the Aero wheel covers. You can fix the plastic wheel covers easily with body fillers and spray paint. Worst case scenario is replacing the entire wheel cover for cheap. It's hard to repair alloy wheels yourself flawlessly and having a professional repair it is expensive.
@DirtyTesla
@DirtyTesla 5 жыл бұрын
That's a great point I didn't think of that. The 19s are just more expensive in so many aspects. I didn't want to have to pay to replace the tires!

On of the advantages of the aero wheels that I've "discovered" is that they are easy to touchup DIY if you get any "curb rash". I'm not sure if the 19' wheels are the same way, but with mine I've gotten proficient at removing the aero wheel cover, cleaning up any dust, using some fine grit sandpaper to wet sand and smooth out, and putting a layer of touchup paint and clearcoat on. Pop the aero wheel cover back on and it looks new again. The color is actually a Duplicolor Ford paint code, mentioned on some of the Tesla forums.

@@DirtyTesla I guess a wheel is a wheel, even if it is from Tesla! The first time my "better half" curbed a wheel I had someone come out and repair for $125. The next two times I curbed the wheels and, after eating some humble pie, I figured I would give it a shot since I could always call the guy out again to repair my repair if necessary. Of course it just depends on how much time you want to spend smoothing out and prepping with different grits of sandpaper. How come both wheels have the exact same 310 mile rating? Seems the 18" would have a higher EPA rating? I wonder if anyone has done a long road trip comparing the two tires to validate how much more highway range the 18's provide over the 19's?
@DirtyTesla
@DirtyTesla 5 жыл бұрын
Tesla states aero with cover is 10% more efficient. So the 18s will go farther. And in winter, no way in hell the car is going 310 miles no matter what. So epa is just for comparison. But you can see on the new model S Performance when you switch tires they change the epa estimate and lower it.

EPA ratings are for a car model and engine type, not for each and every combination of extras. In principle, you'd get lower EPA ratings if you had the bigger stereo because it would likely use more power.

I don’t understand the obsession that people have with ultra low profile tyres. They’re dearer, rougher ride, worse efficiency, easier to damage a rim, and harder to source a tyre in a lot of places. I’d also pick the 18 aeros every time, though I do often remove the covers unless highway driving- apparently around a 1- 2% efficiency change.
