Excellent tutorial. I liked the way you gave your logic behind creating the model the way you did and also the potential pitfalls with various methods. This was much more useful than the typical "do this, then that" type of tutorial. One tip, I've gotten into the habit of adding notes to each feature on the design tree. It really makes it easier to quickly go back and modify features. Thanks and keep up the great work!!!

I do product design is school and leaned to surface with Siemens NX last year. Im actually pretty good at surfacing but I was stressing because i couldn't understand how people draw cars and helmets and things with a lot of crazy curves. I mean I can draw a glass/sculpture/... With quite some features and curves but i never tought drawing cars was actually the same thing but bigger. Thanks for explaining and easing my mind :p

They first make a clay model, take pictures of it and then do what u showed. Amazing And the difference between G2 and G3 is: with G2 the tension of the surface is being devided over the first 2 control points wheras with G3 the tension is also divided past the second control point over the whole surface thats being matched i think but they're basically the same

If you want to lvl up, have to use curvature hairlines. Something following curvature between surfaces is only stage one. Creating proper flow of curvature hairs is stage 2. Profile tweaking is last stage.

Hello, a friend is using an LDV V80 Biggest Van to live in and I said I would model the van so she can plan an internal layout. So it needs to be accurate from the internal volume point of view. I have SW 2016 and am proficient in modelling generally but haven't worked with surfaces much. I assume using surfaces would be the best in this scenario? I have a simple 2D sketch but only back and side views but the van is in my drive for the build so I can take some real measurements if I need to. At the moment I just used some splines drawn on the back plane for half of the outline and used simple surface extrude to get started. Then mirrored the bodies to give me a box of approx correct shape. Do you think this is a good approach. Many people use Sketchup but I haven't used that SW and because I have SW I think it offers greater capability. Especially when it comes to cabinet making, cut lists, laying out/nesting parts etc. Even looking at total weight of items by using real materials etc. Be interested in your thoughts.
@MahdiDesigns
@MahdiDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
I just did a google search of blueprints of that van and some came up. You could model it the same way i modelled the Tesla is this video. However, to be honest I don't see the value in modelling the van for your friend. I think it would be better to model the interior space of the van (based of measurements) and then present her with various layout options in that interior space. Modelling the exterior of the van seems like a lot of work for little return. I assume your friend doesn't use SW so not sure what she would do with a model of the exterior. Various models of the inside space with alternate arrangements could be pretty useful though, for visualising, planning, sizing etc. Good luck
@allanpennington
@allanpennington 3 жыл бұрын
Mech Designs & SolidWorks Tutorials Thanks, exactly my thoughts too. The inside has various protruding parts like the wheel wells and strengthening ribs which impact the internal space. The van will be insulated and have a ply lining which then will form the basis of the internal volume. The question is do surfaces represent the best modelling method for the shell? I suppose it gives the most flexibility. BTW the only blueprints I found were expensive at 20 Euro. Did you find a free set anywhere?
@MahdiDesigns
@MahdiDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
@@allanpennington Yes surfacing is the most accurate way to model the shell. You can just crop the blueprint views from the images in a google search, resolution wont be amazing but it would be good enough

This is a solid model. 3D printing software could hollow it out if desired. Obviously this isn't as in depth as a real car designed for manufacture

You can project a sketch onto a surface body and then use split line to split it into multiple bodies then delete face to remove the section you don't want

The BEST way t do that is using the indent tool that allows you to add the gap_tickness you want to remove bettwen surfaces

can it simulate this? hhehe including its parameters and calculations?
@MahdiDesigns
@MahdiDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
You could simulate the aerodynamics with this model. The body shape would be slightly different from the real model (not a perfect match) but would give a rough idea of the drag of the car. You couldn't really simulate the strength of components or how it would behave in a crash as this is just a model of the exterior shell as one whole piece

in what way this cad be used in car industries? since there is no engineering consideration.
@MahdiDesigns
@MahdiDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
This is just replicating the cars exterior to demonstrate surfacing methods in the software. It's not designing a car body from scratch for manufacture. Obviously a car isn't made as one piece. For each section you would consider the materials, strength, manufacturability, drag, operating environment compatibility etc. This video isn't about how to design a car for manufacture. I even say in the video this specific software isn't ideal for automotive bodies. Most likely Catia is used in the industry.

You said you will be able to learn to create surface. But there is no hint on which key to press to switch between line to spline mode. How to switch from XY to YZ plane. This video is not for beginner, it is just a show off.
@MahdiDesigns
@MahdiDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry you feel that way. This isn't intended to be a beginner guide to surfacing. I recommend look at Innova Systems video about creating a mouse with surfacing. Modelling a car is more complex and this video is a guide on how to approach it and a discussion on various concepts. To switch between line and spline you just select the different tools in the ribbon, to switch between ZXY planes I just click on the axis arrows in the bottom left
