I was really impressed by AI day, but what i dont really get is why everyone seems to believe that he needs to explain the content of that presentation. I am german and i Was still able to understand enough so that 10 explanation Videos across half a dozen KZfaq channels didnt provide a Single bit of New information. Dont get me wrong: contextualisation requires in depth information on the state of the Art which is valuable since i am not an expert on this field, but was it that hard to understand what they were presenting on AI day?

@@tristanblenk3041 All this explaining is for the Americans. As a Texan who has traveled and lived all over the US, I can tell you that the general public would have to google half the terms used and then google an explanation of that definition. I find the average intelligence of my fellow countrymen to be somewhat below par, and when they start gathering in groups you quickly find the average intelligence of the group will quickly fall below the intelligence of the dumbest individual of that group. This is the only way to explain why we still allow people like Gordon Johnson to speak on TV...

I think James Douma on Dave Lee's Channel mentioned all of this had been done before, but left for a dead end.. and then Elon and team picked the method up again and started without the perception that it was just a toy that would never lead to anything. Much like SpaceX took a fresh look at rocketry and deliberately ignored the "preconceptions" and just "Tried". If it teaches anything to anyone.. one of Elon's strengths is he does a lot of thinking about thinking, and constrictive or restrictive thinking trying to justify the sunk cost fear.

For Convex vs. Non-Convex, you can think about what the program is doing as though it's putting a ball into a depression to find the depression's lowest point. If the depression is completely smooth with just one low point (i.e. convex, like a parabola), then the ball will always roll down and "find" the correct location. However, if the depression is more irregular, it's possible that the ball will stop in any one of a number of places that may not be the absolute lowest spot.

And even if that sounds like a minor difference, it is not. In one case you only have to look for the best solution until you found it and once you found it you can be sure it's the right one, in the other you cannot stop ever and have to look at every single possible solution to rule out that there's a better one out there.
@thechessmaster9291

I may not always be necessary to find the "best" solution . Sometimes good enough is good enough . This "good enough " point could be determined by static parameters or even dynamic parameters. James seems at his heart someone like Elon, he's seen a lot.. and does himself.. do a lot of thinking about thinking. I think what James lacks is Elon's insular isolation on "the spectrum" which enables him to focus and ignore dogma and ceremony.. and try things when others assume you'll fail. It might also help Elon not "feel" failure as deeply as others or carry it as a burden.

I was disappointed in Dave Lee's interview with James and only slightly less disappointed with Warren's Redlich's. I'm waiting for Lex to interview James. Maybe a three-way with Rob would be the ultimate. Lex for the romantic, philosophizing, James for the understandable deep dive of the technical details and Rob to distill it to a layman's level without dumbing it down. These 3 are the best.

Great question. I guess, at the moment the goal is probably just to get good at driving but maybe in the future, it can also optimize for efficiency. Since in EVs, the braking energy is regenerated, the opportunity is probably very small, but still interesting point.

I like the opportunity to take the more efficient route rather than the shortest route. As exciting and Practical sounding as Autonomous bots on Mars sounds. I tend to think they would be hopeless without humans to train them. Perhaps they will send several bots to each human in a ratio, and leave the bots behind to complete tasks or welcome the next team. Teslas have to watch other Cars and drivers to learn, and the bots will need humans in a similar manner to "create" the Vector space in which they operate.

The key difference between "vector" and "image" technologies is that images are bitmaps but vectors are equations. You can do a lot more computing operations with vector equations than you can with bitmap images. That gives you a lot more power and flexibility, over all.

The other key point is the vector space is a 3D space that integrates data from all images. Thus, a vehicle captured in two images in represented as a single vehicle in its relative position in the vector space based on information from the two different images. The one vehicle is labeled in the vector space once. The vector space represents the real world around the car better than a set of disconnected images.

Thanks. That's the main thing that was still confusing me.

No. It is because a better model of the world is one where it is 4-d with the 4th being time and with persistent 3-d objects moving through that space in time. A single image doesn’t have enough information to reconstruct a correct model of the world but video from multiple cameras gives you a better chance. It lets you model/remember objects that can be totally obscured in some or all cameras through one or more frames. It lets you calculate distance which you may not be able to accurately do with just one frame. A velocity in this space is a vector (assuming no twisting etc…).

Our brains work this way. Our language reflects this. Much metaphorical language is actually 4-d. Example: why are you so down?

You brought up an angle I hadn't thought about, which is about Tesla changing it's mission statement. Great insight.

Given the announcement of the Tesla Bot, I think it's a foregone conclusion. One interesting thing about it: If the mission statement does change into one as general and flexible as Elon's tweet, then that opens up the possibility for Tesla to buy any/all of Elon's other companies (Neuralink, etc.).
