Initial concept of building a Hampson-Linde cycle air liquefier. Patented independently by William Hampson and Carl von LInde in 1895, this is a conceptually very simple, albeit inefficient, way to liquefy air. Explanation of system operation, and testing temperature drop using a coil of copper pipe and expansion valve.

It's amazing how simple the concept is but it certainly seems like it would be very difficult to execute. I'm very interested to see more of this project. Thanks.

@colt4547 Yes, it's very simple in concept, but I'm sure there are major hurdles to overcome. Getting the air clean and dry enough, and making an expansion valve work at cryogenic temperatures come to mind, but I'm sure there are more.

Use helium as a refrigerant, Through a Hitachi Helium compressor at 340 Psi Supply Pressure, 100 psi return pressure through some phosphor-bronze screen 1st stage and a lead/HoCu2 2nd stage and get 44 Watts @ 40K on the 1st stage and 1 watt @ 4.2K on the 2nd stage. Unloaded, hit bottom of 2.5K. Liquefy anything you desire!

Great project.Did you came up with any improvements?Please post another video of your progress.How about if you skip the recuperation and replace it with water loop to take the heat out more efficiently and there will be less pressure required.Air is hard to liquify and may not be practical due to huge energy consuptions.

Outstanding design! Could you get lower temperatures using a propane precooler? If you'd like I have a document on the Design and Analysis of a 150 K Cascade Joule-Thomson Microcooler I've been thinking about a multi stage design. Propane works in consumer refrigeration compressors. It is cheap and unlike most refrigerants does not require a licence to buy. Just get BBQ propane. The heat exchanger could simply be running the compressed nitrogen through a small diameter pipe inside a larger copper pipe containing the expanding propane. Getting the propane pipe's lumen to be hermetically sealed could be difficult, but there are copper T connectors available. Get T connectors with one arm with the outside diameter of the smaller nitrogen tube, and the other arm having the outside diameter of the propane tube. Cut a short section of the large diameter tube, slide it over the smaller nitrogen tube. Now slide the T connector onto the smaller nitrogen tube, so that the T connector's large diameter arm slides over the propane tube. When soldered, the propane tube's lumen is sealed from the outside. Attach the stem of the T connectors to the propane refrigeration circuit's expansion valve and the propane compressor's suction line respectively. You can make the propane precooling heat exchanger compact by making several shorter heat exchangers like this connected in series. Hope my explanation made sense.

@bkraz333 Thanks! Does higher pressure equal higher efficiency? If I double the pressure and half the flow, deltaT on both the expansion valve and (possibly?) the recuperator double, which should mean the same efficiency, if I'm thinking right. If so, why is high pressure preferred? Would you have any idea where to find info on recuperator calculations, ie how long does it need to be to get a certain deltaT? I couldn't find your DIY Liquid Nitrogen video, is it still up?

Velocity, the faster the air acceleration the more heat adsorbed, the use capillary tube instead of valves now days , even in refrigerators , they are super simple to get working

i did not listen to every thing u said in the vid so if u mention your valve posibly being maybe to big then forgive my mention. , the spud of a propane torch might work better, great video by the way , i love this devcie, do you intend to finnish this device?

There should be another expansion valve that leads to an evaporator wrapped around the cooling chamber and insulated from the outside. As well, just before the compressor should be a branch to a chimney that encases the radiator after it, with the connection beneath the radiator. Ultimately, the heat exchangers need as much surface area of contact as possible, between the two fluid systems, and minimal surface area of contact with the outside.

Connect 3 450 psi 230v a/c compressors in series for 1350 psi, some stainless tubing and a well insulated bucket and there you go. Feed the cold air back into and let it run like hell and make a racket and maybe make liquid air. Now dump it in a an old freezer to cryogenic stress relieve your favorite steel alloy. have fun. get a cheap scuba compressor for about 450$ if you want.

I realize this is way old, but did you ever end up making this work? I've set up a similar scheme where I'm boosting a fridge compressor with an input from a regular shop compressor and getting a pretty steady flow around 600 psi without either compressor overheating, but the oil from the fridge compressor is a huge problem at cryogenic temperatures. Was the filter you got able to handle 500-600 psi? Seems like most coalescing filters on the market are only rated to 150 psi.

hey friend as far as i know your machine may work better then it performed in this video, you see you must have your expansion valve adjusted exactly right for the flow rate of your compressore this process is so finiky you may even need a smaller valve also future designs use capilary tubes, the accuracy or percision is very hard to acheive and its best to calibrate it with a gas that liquifies easier then air like r12 or butane if it will liqify butane it will liqify air at that setting

In theory could you use this to produce liquid helium? if so how would this be accomplished?

+KiNg MiDas No, helium is far more difficult. The Joule-Thompson effect produces heating for helium expanding through an orifice, rather than cooling. A system using a turbine or piston expander is required, and getting those to work at cryogenic temperatures is very difficult.

+KiNg MiDas helium temperature is extremely low and I doubt if you can do that in one step easily even to store helium you have to keep thermally insulated container in liquid nitrogen. and even if you manage that there will be unacceptable loss of helium which is expensive unlike air. I think instead of atemt to liquefy helium directly you could try to make Stirling type refrigerator which can be cascaded and thus there are no problems with any temterarures

Throttling can only cool a gas if it is below a certain temperature (determined by the type of gas). Nitrogen and oxygen in air can be throttle-cooled from room temperature, but Helium, Neon, and Hydrogen cannot be. Check this out: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joule%E2%80%93Thomson_effect

Joule-Thompson effect ruins everything here. I think simple tesla turbine could improve situation significantly as it could take away energy from the expanding gas

Generally, you want as few moving parts at low temperature as possible. Designing and building a turbine that can run at cryogenic temperatures can be difficult. Most metals become brittle and parts shrink, causing undo stress. That's why throttle valves are used for air liquefaction. Turbines are mostly used for liquefying helium in large amounts, just because you can't get a temperature drop with a J-T valve unless it is below ~40K.

24680kong I am well aware about entitlement but Tesla turbine is pretty simple in design and I think it can withstand those problems. turbines are not only use for helium they are industry standard in modern air liquefaction throttle valves are bad idea, because they do not remove all that energy from the gas which turbine can remove
