Complete runs aren't that uncommon. Of course, real tractor pulls are limited by weight classes. The Cybertruck is pretty heavy for tractor pulling, but way down on power. The big sleds are pulled by tractors of under 3 tonnes, but most of the weight is engine, with like 6k horsepower. This is not a particularly big sled. By contrast, a steam traction engine has less horsepower than a small car, but enormous torque and weight, and can just drag a sled no issues.

so, just a few general observations as someone who is very much into trucks both as a hobby and as a career, is that the F350 has a hitch mounted lower than the cyber truck, meaning that cybertruck is going to have more traction because cyber truck has more weight on the wheels. this is also why the rivian did so well. f350 could also pull all day, cyber truck will lose a lot of pulling power as it pulls over and over. or, in a real world use case, cyber truck will lose power the farther it goes on its trip. dont get me wrong the cyber truck is cool and all, but id still go with a diesel motor especially because power stays consistent all day while im driving. also i am curious to know the price tag on the 3 motor cyber truck vs an f350. another question is PM/repair cost. id be willing to bet that the cyber truck is going to be far more expensive to run than f350 in the long run. last question that is still unanswered is how does the payload capacity stack up between the two trucks? id bet that f350 will hold up to more weight in the bed and id bet that the f350 lasts longer in terms of being able to do its job 10, 20, maybe even 30 years from now. again, just a few observations...nobody get bent out of shape now

@hatslapper68605 ай бұрын
I think the bigger problem holding the Cybertruck (or any electric truck) back is just the sheer energy required to tow over long distances. Diesel is quite energy dense and gas pumps are significantly faster for refueling than charging stations are currently which makes diesel trucks a lot more sensible for long hauls. I think as battery energy density and charging speeds increase, the gap will narrow between range and refueling/recharging, and electric trucks will become more sensible for towing as well. Tesla has a semi after all, and they seem to be serious about heavy duty EVs.

Rivian's rear suspension looked like it was about to blow out.
@krisdphillips7 ай бұрын
To be fair to Rivian the tow rating is 11,000 lbs and this is nearly triple that. Rivian's truck has it's suspension tuned for comfort over hauling. The F350 didn't squat at all hardly because it has a higher tow rating with a stiffer suspension. However, it will ride like a brick glued to a steel beam down the road. I know because I own an F250 big block truck. It is basically trying to shake my teeth out of my skull on any bumpy road, but I love it to death when I have to haul something. The Cybertruck's suspension was squatting basically just as much as the Rivian because 99% of the people who own it will care more about ride comfort and are never going to haul with it. Most people are idiots that buy trucks these days for them to be pavement princes and princesses for the status of "owning a truck". As such most truck makers in this class are going to tune it for comfort. This truck will be no different.

@TheBowerbird7 ай бұрын
It's not a huge amount.
@printgymnast3687 ай бұрын
@Fighter4Street Well, the difference is a gas car will always have the same power throughout the tank. So long as the fuel has the correct octane. While that battery will degrade every time you use it or charge it. Also, over its lifetime, the battery will lose more capacity than a car will lose hp due to wear and tear. Try this same test with 1/2 of the battery while the truck has half a tank, I guarantee it won't perform nearly as well. Also, take that gas truck after 100k miles and put it next to the cyber truck, and I promise the cybertruck will start to have issues. In this day and age batteries are consumables. And when the battery costs 10 to 30k to replace, I'll take a gas or even better diesel truck that will keep on trucking like the day it came off the lot with proper maintenance. There is no way to maintain a battery. You can see the same concept with pneumatic vrs electric tools. In the beginning of the tool everything works great. But after a couple years of use and a couple hundred charging cycles it won't perform. While that air impact will keep on going so long as you took reasonable care of it. End of story battery technology has a long way to go before being competitive. It's very telling when you need a bunch of tax breaks and free charging for people to even buy your car in the first place. Cool concept but pure power isn't what makes a good truck. That is reliability, ease of maintenance and repair, and range things that the cybertruck can't compete with. If you want the "cybertruck" all power to you but don't act like it's a replacement for a pickup

How many times in a row can the Tesla truck tow that payload without charging? How long do you have to wait before you’re charged and ready to tow? When towing constant power is a requirement. I love the Tesla truck, I think it’s awesome, but I tow and power decrease is a major concern. How much per decrease is there after 1 run, 10 runs, 20 runs? If you have the power to get up the hill, will you still have power to tow haul it down the hill? Just another perspective, I could be completely wrong. Does anyone know?

I can almost bet you that there would be a huge difference between the first pull and the second and then the 4th and 7th etc that would equal the pull distance say of some of the California Sierras but I also know that the regeneration in the big rig versions is nearly completely recharging there batteries when they reach the other side however what would happen when you head to the central plain states where you go from sea level to 5k elevation and stay there for a thousand miles? Also a quick question why didn't they use the Dodge truck? It is if not the torque king it's very close and I am a Powerstroke fan in heart but have to give Dodge huge props for their motors and tow-torque (just haven't looked at them recently to compare).

they really need to do this test with all trucks fitted with the same style aggressive mud tire like the cybertruck. the F150 comes with a very highway oriented smooth tire, and the R1T has a mild highway and offroad all terrain tire, and the F350 generally has also a very highway oriented tire. on softer or clayish surfaces like this, a more aggressive knobbly tire does lend better to towing tractive effort especially with pulling a sled. also i wonder if they ran them all with the same drawbar height. also affects how much that skid anchors relative to pull

There is something to be said about putting a large diesel engine over the front wheels to help give more leverage when pivoting the payload's weight about the rear wheels. As an F-350, SRW Diesel owner, I'll admit this is very impressive! That said, my two greatest concerns for an E-truck are #1) Range as a function of payload and towing load. #2) Options for off-grid charging. - If one tows a large camper into the boonies and discovers they lack enough charge to return, what then? With gas or Diesel, it is resolved with a can or two of fuel. With the E-truck, it requires bringing a generator, and a BIG one at that, PLUS even more gas to cover the energy conversion losses. The long bed F-350's fuel capacity is 48 gallons. Without towing,no payload and conservative driving, I've gone 900 miles without stopping for fuel (20 MPG), and over 500 miles without stopping. With a 10k trailer and average aerodynamics, this may drop to 12 or 13 MPG. That still enables a range of over 570 miles. Many trucks (including mine often do entail driving long ranges while towing. To really break into this market, Tesla, Ford, Rivian, etc. must offer a backup solution that preemptively addresses the off-grid charging issue. Tesla's home charging circuit is rated for 80 Amps at 240 Volts. (19.2 kiloWatts). Small RV generators are a tenth that size, while the larger ones are a fifth that size. They run 120, not 240 Volts. A transformer could double the (single phase) voltage coming from an existing RV generator. This would at enable a much slower, but still valid means of off grid charging. I know it's a bastard solution to resort to petroleum for off-grid. But there is currently no other viable alternative.
@imharbinger7 ай бұрын
Charging stations will be build. Just like gas stations were build. Towing power will improve, as will everything else that is inside of a car. I am sure horse riders had concerns that, if they had to travel for three days to get to the next city, they might run out of gas, but the horses can just eat grass anywhere. Just like there is a gas station every two blocks in all direction, EV charging stations will be everywhere. Only thing that will be different is you don't have to drive through thick cancer causing smoke. And yes pollution will be made somewhere, just not right next to your nose. And you wouldn't be one of the 60 thousand people dying from car crash, when AI start driving the cars.
@gregparrott7 ай бұрын
@@imharbingerI know that the infrastructure WILL be built. But I distinguish between what WILL BE versus WHAT IS. If your favorite car maker starts selling a hydrogen powered car, would you buy it - TODAY? Or, would you want more infrastructure to be in place so that you can actually use it? While the situation for EVs is far better than hydrogen, you get the idea. For long distance driving and especially for off grid use, the infrastructure just isn't there yet. Another unaddressed item that I mentioned is the shortfall in refuel/recharge when off grid. Here is a real world example: A couple years ago, the news report about an accident on the interstate between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. All lanes were blocked for hours and it was 100F+ outside. So, a lot of people rand their A/C while waiting. By the time the jam was finally cleared, a large number of vehicles, and especially EVs were out of energy and unable to drive. For those out of gas, roadside assistance of a compassionate driver could return with a gallon of gas, problem solved. But for the EVs, well they were SOL.They had to wait their turn to be towed to a charging station. Now consider you've driven into a sparsely populated area, and you lack the energy to make it to a charging station. The vehicle quits on a rough, 4wd dirt road, part way to a charging station. What's your solution? For those of us who travel to remote areas in western states for Summer activities (e.g. Nevada, Utah, Wyoming), we'd want to KNOW the answer, and preferably it is one which does not entail towing or needing to bring a large generator and paying that person to wait for hours while it's charging. One aid would be that the Cybertruck has TWO battery packs.= the main one plus a much smaller, removable/swappable one. This would at least enable a rapid solution analogous to a gas can.
@mpmpm7 ай бұрын
@@gregparrott "One aid would be that the Cybertruck has TWO battery packs." It actually has, or at least, it can. Roadside assistence can have the 'range extender' with them, when helping electric cars like the CT. But because this market is still small, that isn't happening yet. There you are correct. But you have to start somewhere; see the comparison between hoses and cars above. In a few years, road assistence cars will have general range extenders, with adapters, to fit on all electric cars. In a sparsely populated area, where there aren't many charging stations, indeed, I still would buy a fossil fuel car, probably. Fact is, there is a market for electric/hydrogen cars, and that will not go away. Also a fact is, that eventually, fossil fuel cars _will_ go away. Be it not in my lifetime.
@gregparrott7 ай бұрын
@@mpmpm Thanks for the info on range extenders. At least some effort appears to have been made to handle an off-grid dead battery issue. That's a good question. You'll clearly use far more energy to tow anything. After just exceeding the tow capacity of every one of these vehicles by about 30,000 pounds I would expect the EVs to have drained a significant amount of their battery power. Yes, of course the diesel used more fuel but you'll likely still have hundreds of miles remaining until empty. The F150 Lightning has already shown in videos to get terrible towing "fuel economy". These vehicles, at best, are good for job sites where you can plug them in at the end of the day after jaunting around a limited area with stuff in the bed and are not good in any real life capacity for towing trailers thousands of miles. The F350 diesel would be the only intelligent choice for long range.

Y'all thought you could fool us. Good job with the aerial shot lol. This is not equivalent to an actual truck/tractor pull, there are only 3 weight slots taken up out of 12-14, you just adjusted the waits to make it work and make it look like a stock pickup truck could do a real pull.

Thats what ive been saying the whole time. They show these crazy things the electric trucks are doing but how bad is that hurting battery power? They literally said in this video that the trucks need to be at full charge because thats when you get peak power. A regular ICE engine truck is at peak power no matter how much gas is in it.
@p0pimp20047 ай бұрын
@@itsjohn7848nobody is debating that gas is better in terms of fuel economy. These are things that will be ironed out over time. They aren't going to solve every problem overnight. I do think that something better will come along to replace typical batteries or batteries tech will get to a point where they can squeeze a lot more power into a smaller form factor. I also think portable batteries may be a thing. But no one is arguing that electric is better than gas right now
@itsjohn78487 ай бұрын
I agree with you that technology will come along that will improve electric trucks and i think there will be a day where range and power are not as much of an issue when it comes to towing for electric vehicles. Tech keeps evolving. However, i cant agree with you that nobody is saying electric is better than gas. Just watch this video alone. There are so many people that believe electric is better than gas but it simply just hasn't yet reached that point. We’re not there. At least not yet.

@@itsjohn7848 nah fam. Electric has its advantages especially when u talk about torque, but we definitely know they can't compare when it comes to things like range. Anyone arguing that, u shouldn't listen to. I think electric definitely has the potential to be better but we not there yet. But it is funny how technology works tho. Think about CDs. That tech only lasted like a decade or two. SD cards was always the better option but the tech wasn't there yet and it was too expensive at the time. CDs served as a cheap alternative in the meantime until the cost of storage went down. Not SD is the standard. I see something similar like that happening with electric. This may just be a stop gap until some better knew tech comes along that is more economical and more productive.
