This groove is outrageous! I will never forget listening to War of Being the first time and hearing this groove kick in -- and THEN the hertas just started rolling in and I nearly lost my mind. I've been listening to TesseracT since just before the release of the Concealing Fate EP. Your drumming is a HUGE inspiration. Absolute. Legend.

It's amazing how useful this is, even for a guitarist like me. I'm on that "just listen to it until it sticks in my hands, and THEN pick up the guitar and figure out the notes" wagon, which is what I've been doing for all the Tesseract songs I've learned so far. But actually getting it explained to me by the drummer of the band is an absolute godsend. It's such a treat, but also such an evolution in how musicians and listeners interact.

Absolutely! I told myself for years that I absolutely needed to deliver all my content on an acoustic kit… and I didn’t have the setup to do that well. So when I got this TD50kv during Covid and realised the potential, I went all in. I only rehearse on this thing - 99% translates easily over to the acoustic kit, for me at least 🤘🏻

@@JayTesseracT It really changed the game I think, certainly changed my perspective on it. It was the Tess Live in Lockdown stuff that got me on board. Couple of years later and my investment was a TD27KV, absolutely love it! I liken it to a guitarist practicing on the couch. Easier to access and not distrubing everyone around you while you practice.

Thanks for this lesson, Jay. I absolutely love this new song of yours, and your drum track is killer, dude! I’ve tried, at least to cover both Seven Names and Tourniquet, which were challenging to say the least, but really good fun! I’ve been drumming for 28 years now with a physical disability, so much of my drumming is based on compromise. It just so happens that my favourite sub-genre of metal is progressive, the tricky thing for me though is that I don’t, and never have had any comprehension of music theory at all! I’ve predominantly learnt by simply listening to my favourite bands, and trying my very best to simulate the drum track. I’ve managed to cover some of Tool, Seven, Rivers of Nihil, Meshuggah (including Bleed, as best I can), Puscifer and Dream Theater. The groove you were demonstrating here I have managed to play easy enough. The main issue I have with odd time signatures is the snare placement beyond anything else. The most complicated part I’m finding of War of Being is your opening groove, which is then repeated once more. I want to keep at it though, cause it is one badass drum track, man. So cool😊🤟🏽

Excellent drum lesson, the advices are on point once again, thank you Jay!! Bleed by Messhugah is indeed a great starting (finishing?) point to learn hertas. You can also master hertas, but through easier songs from Iced Earth called "birth of the wicked" and "The coming curse" ("Overture of the wicked" version, not from the album). The hertas in here are much slower than Bleed or War of Being, it helps a lot to apprehend that kind of rhythm, moreover through a song! I worked for me at least... Aside from that, just follow Jay words, he is spitting facts!
@ouie-fl4qo
@ouie-fl4qo Жыл бұрын
I think bleed is the starting and finishing point of hertas. It’s quite a simple pattern (in theory) so you start slow and speed it up.
@yannmenage

Thanks Jay! I spent like an hour the other day mapping this out in EZ drummer lol. Question, in the 3rd repeat of the pattern, was there a reason you did double herta in some of the 7s but none of the 6s? Also, I was thinking about trying to learn the herta section first and using the same foot pattern for the non-herta earlier parts (like RRLR for the 4s, RRLRLR for 6s and RRLRRLR for 7s). Do you think that's too fatiguing for the right foot?
@JayTesseracT
@JayTesseracT Жыл бұрын
You know, I had't considered dropping hertas in the middle of those sixes - I just 'heard' them naturaly over the sevens. My brain likes hearing weird patterns in odd numbers though. The sixes would take a little more work to get down, placing a laod more hertas in close proximity, so it might have gotten a little messy - for me at least. I'd imagine something like that pattern you wrote out would work - I tend not to reinvent the wheel though unless playing it with that particular pattern presents an optimal 'feel'.
