Impressive? What is impressive about it? Thing looks dangerous as hell. You do realize we've been flying for over 100 years? Tell me what is impressive about this, I'd like to know. It looks like the gocart of aircraft. If they could make it safe(where one shorted wire won't kill you) then it might be cool to have(but I'm sure only rich people can afford it to drive around their golf courses) . I don't see this as being impressive. Maybe there is some aerodynamical achievements. Is a real person in it? What happen when you add a 200 lb human? How long do the batteries last?

I guess they are making sure that all the systems for reversal to vertical flight are in order for safety to be assured. Yeah, they're practically idling around the patch right now. 84 km/h is not really getting any lift from the fixed wings. A Piper Tomahawk with a lot more wing area would sink like a rock at that speed. Projected cruise will be about 280 km/h as I recall. Focus right now is perfecting the inefficient parts of the flight profile - T/O, transition, turning , hover, landing -- before getting into the part of the envelope where this design really shines. Folks like Ehang and Volocopter are shooting for short hop, lower speed profiles (downtown to airport for example) and are more efficient in up/down/hover and less efficient in level, higher speed flight. Lilium will be less efficient at the ends of the flight profile, but much faster and more efficient where they expect to spend by far the bulk of the time -- level and fast with the wings and not the vectored thrust doing all the lifting. Sure is hard to wait for them to get to that part of the testing, though.
@EdwardOmagbemi
@EdwardOmagbemi 2 жыл бұрын
Level flight is easy to manage once you can manage hovering and transition. That's what I learned in a helicopter introduction flight. I could easily take over and fly the heli on level flight. But coming to a stop and hovering on the spot was a totally different game. So the instructor told me that that's what I'm going to do most of the time should I decide to become a helicopter pilot. The turbulence indicators on the engine also indicate that this is the most challenging phase to control. You don't have that challenge with drone type lifts. But then you also don't get the efficiency in level flight which will be most of the journey. I guess that's why Lillium puts all the efforts into mastering this phase. Everything else will be super easy then.
@Flightcoach
@Flightcoach 2 жыл бұрын
Right thanks for chipping in guys, good stuff! Sounds logical indeed. Since the commercial result depends on getting that high efficiency in level flight I do hope they have the windtunnel test results to prove that phase works

It looks like this craft was operated like any other drone that you can buy to take pictures of your house from above. The fans were pointed downwards, so the whole flight was in helicopter mode. I assume that the batteries were pretty much depleted after landing. The strings at the trailing edge showed that there was no laminar airflow. The question is how efficient the whole thing is if it is flown in the targeted mixed mode from start to touch down. During level flight I am still not convinced that these many fans with all the turbulence that they create will achieve anywhere near the efficiency that a normal airplane will. In any case you cannot cheat physics and there is a lower limit for the total energy that you need for a flight with a reasonable payload. And that means that all the common problems with the energy density of batteries will apply here exactly as in all other designs. Showing interesting movies is one thing, showing the data is another. As far as I remember Lilium was asked reasonable questions from experts all the time and they never came up with any credible answers. They always prefered to talk to investors, rather than to aeronautical engineers.

It's what the plan looks like! I wait for the certification: what license, what airfield? It will be a good plane only if there are no airfield needed to operate and the license requirement lifted (like with the drones: air law, meteorology and same basic safety; no extensive flight training; additional training for airport operations possible) This thing doesn't seem to had any safety feature which will allow to lift some requirements (full SPL, PPL, airport, parachute, no private property operation from your lawn).

eVTOL developer, Lilium is being investigated by at least five law firms following claims it and “certain employees” engaged in “securities fraud or other unlawful business practices”. On March 14, 2022, Iceberg Research published a report: “Lilium NV - The Losing Horse in the eVTOL Race” . Iceberg’s report found, among other issues, that experts have raised doubts about the viability of the Lilium Jet reaching its objective of flying up to 155 miles. Citing “its configuration of 36 ducted fans (recently reduced to 30) that devour power during takeoff and landing (hovering), and leaves little power for actual flight.”
