The XL series are actually quite successful when used for their own purposes. For example, in my tests on the buck converter, the efficiency is around % 75-80 for the LM2596, while it is around 90-95% for the XL4005. XL6009 is for boost converter only. I see that this circuit design including the Buck converter is actually a failed topology. You did a very nice and professional job. It was useful for me, thanks a lot!

These DC-DC converters with the XL6019E1 semiconductor in the TO263-5L package performs rather poorly, given the datasheet specifications. However, the KeeYees DC-DC Boost Mini step-up converter with a micro USB input on the PCB which has the SDB628 6-pin SOT23 semiconductor package really outperforms the larger aforementioned units surprisingly well. The entire KeeYees circuit board is less than 1/3 the size of the XL6019E1 type modules. The SDB628 6-pin SOT23 component is a fraction of the size and it really outperforms the XL6019E1 by a landslide. This seems very counterintuitive to say the least. Thank you for this video and all of your research. Keep up the excellent work.

If you read the data sheet for this buck boost converter it is rated at about 1 amp output continuous with about 10v differential so example 10volts in at 2 amps = 20volts out 1 amp = 22.5w input with losses about 2.5 watts 5a is its Max rating for milliseconds which includes input or output amperage
@spylake
@spylake 4 жыл бұрын
The reviewer has misread the spec sheet. The 4 amp rating is for the switching MOSFET and essentially defines the Maximum INPUT current NOT the Maximum OUTPUT current. Consider that in the video's first load test he is trying to draw 4 amps at 30 volts from a 12 volt source. This is a 120 watt load. If we assume 92% efficiency that means we must draw 130 watts from the 12 volt source. This translates into aprox. 11 Amps. This is well beyond the 4 Amp specification for the device. Because this is a buck-boost up converter the output current limit is derived from the input and output voltage. In the reviewer's example 12 Vin 30 Vout we can calculate the maximum current from this formula. Iout = (4 Amps * Vin * 0.85%) / Vout Note: I used 85% efficiency because the datasheet only gives a rating for one case and depending of the voltages it can range between 85% and 96%. Hence 85% is a safe maximum. In your specific use case, you may be able to exceed this slightly. Simplifying our equation and inserting the values used in the video we get Amps out = 3.4amps * Vin / Vout 3.4 *12/30 = 1.35 amps Maximum output at 30 Volts with and input source of 12 volts. Note this formula is for any case where Vin < Vout.

Great review, very detailed and methodical. However I wish you also tested the efficiency of these things. They claim 94% efficiency in the datasheet. But with my actual test they had about 50% efficiency!! I was trying to run a 9v@1A load from a 5v supply and I realized it draws about 3.5A of current from the input.

The stability test at 4.14 to 4.19 shows a nasty problem. If the input voltage drops below the minimum threshold - the output voltage jumps from the desired 8v up to 13.6v. My testing of an input supply drop-out - with a small LED load - has produced an over-voltage up to 25v when set for a 4v output. I would have expected the output to degrade safely when the input drops below the minimum.

it doesn't work and failed shown at 07:19 . But generally if it works, the total power P = V x I, I is current so if output is 30V at 3A, P = 30X3= 90W and the input should be 90W + losses (if 10%) = 100W. and you see at 12V, you can get I = P÷V, I= 100÷12= 8.33A

P=IV, I=3, V=5, so P=3(5)=15W and for output you wan to make P=2(9)=18W. so you wan to get 3W more than input. The law of conservation of energy states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed - only converted from one form of energy to another. you can't do it.

Hi, I am working on a project that uses a hand crank generator that I built to charge an 18650 Li-ion cell. I have a charge protection circuit for the 18650 cell which requires a 5V input. The issue that I have is that due to the nature of hand cranks the voltages they produce are quite variable. I have added a 4700uF capacitor to the output of the generator to try to help with this but I need a buck/boost converter which will take the voltage from the hand crank, about 8V (which varies by about +/- 1V) and provide a 5V output which is stable to supply the Charging circuit. The other issue is that the current draw from the battery decreases as it gets more charged so I’m worried this will further affect the stability of the buck/boosted 5V. Can you suggest a buck/boost module for this? Thanks
@robojax
@robojax 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can use just a boost converter so it always output like 12V. then you need buck converter that brings it down to your need level. of course if you get buck boost will do that for you.

Hi, it is OUT. See my test.
@RexxSchneider
@RexxSchneider 3 жыл бұрын
@@robojax Nonsense - the 4A current limit is the limit of the current flowing through the internal MOSFET. If it's in boost mode, the 4A will be the limit for the INPUT current. That's why you get the so-called "FAILED" when you try to take 4A out at 30V - with only 12V input, you're trying to draw over 10A input current. Of course it shuts down.

if you connect 24V 1A or 24V 1000A it doesn't make any difference when you connecting it. Only when you consume or use higher current, if the convert can't handle it, either it disconnects the output or the module burns. in your case the module will simply reduce the voltage and and allow up to 5V to pass. the 5V depends on the load. if the load needs 2A, then 2A will pass.

I've demonstrated the maximum current (ampere). if the output power exceeds, the voltage is reduced. so check your load or router's current before connecting making sure this module is capable of powering it up. calculate input and output power and input must be 15% higher than output. your 5V must be able to have AT LEAST 15% higher power than output. Power is IV where I=current in ampere and V is voltage for both input and output calculate this. good luck.

15% is the losses, if you can't increase the input by 15%, then subtract 15% at output. I have to make a video so anyone had question, just send them the link. when input is 12W the output can never be 12W it will always be less than the input by the amount of losses. good luck.

if you take off the trim pot 103=10kΩ then fb=0v; it turns out Vout=48v. if you piggy back xl6009 ic and diode ss34(max 3A instants) on the top with thermal pad then you doable double amperes from 2A to 4A. the module has no voltage protect feature but you can use for lab or cheap project not for expensive device. avg load =12w max then you need to change cap of out put=100u200v and inductor filter=8uh.

What is input current
@robojax
@robojax 5 жыл бұрын
I did not provide it but I have noticed that these converters have about 90% efficiency which is 10% loss. So they need 10% extra power at input. for 9V and 3A output 9V x3A=27W, add 10% to it would be 1.1x27 =29.7W. Now if you need to get this power from 12V input, then 29.7W÷12V =2.48A at input.
@repcomk
@repcomk 5 жыл бұрын
Input current depends of the output, but in video you can’t see variations in the input it means that power is enough for the tests, the regulator is what fails

the chip is already soldered on the PCB so you can't put it on heat sink. Even if you left it, up, there is no enough room to put heat sink as the inductor is on the way. So this module is how it is used.

Because if you put 12V 1 A it will not boost you. The output is directly proportional to the source power supply, so if you supply lower current than what the destination load uses. It dropped. The test source is invalid, the result of this test is invalid.
