Today we are testing some dandelion fluff in soap, as potentially an alternative to tussah silk. This is video one of five for this series.
Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

This is Alaska Soaper, formerly Alaska Soap and Such. The soap you showed was a wine soap. Using a Strawberry Rhubarb wine made by Bear Creek Distillery in Homer Alaska. Thank you so much. This was exciting to see.

Dandelion infused oil - whatever your infusing base oil is - is amazing for the skin. I know because I make it. I use it in my skin oil moisturizing blend. It's phenomenal for breakouts & preventing them, it seems to have astringent-type properties when I use it for my skin. I notice a beautiful smoothness to my skin & my pores don't clog as they normally would. It also helps with eczema & psoriasis issues - I make a salve using dandelion specifically for people who I know suffering with these conditions & they swear it works like a hot-damn. I have seen the results, which amazed me, quite frankly. Dandelion internally is spectacular for the liver - most of us now have fatty livers because of our diets & all the crappy sodas we drink, plus all of the refined, processed foods we eat - and again for helping clear psoriasis & eczema. It's very high in iron, so also great for people who are anemic. It has a very long history of use. The entire plant can be eaten. Flowers in salads (raw) and in honeys. The young greens, early in the spring, are amazing in salads, and also incredible for cooking with. I infuse the flowers into my raw honey, which gives a very nice flavour in teas & coffees. AND the roots are made into 'coffee substitutes', and have been for a very long time. Great bitter taste, similar to coffee, especially if mixed with chicory roots. The entire plant is medicinal & edible. Oh yes, and the sap from the stems is great for clearing warts. NOW I am hell-bent on making dandelion soap, which I will be doing this year, and adding this to my line. I don't know why it hadn't occurred to me before, but yes, definitely doing this. Spanks so much for the video 🙂

Yay, another plant thing to experiment with this summer! I also want to make a jewel weed soap, and do something similar to your soap nuts with the horse chestnuts in my front yard (if I can get any before the squirrels hide them all on me).

I’ve used tussah silk many times in my batches and it’s ok. I probably won’t purchase anymore when it’s gone. One thing that goes into every single one of my batches is eggs! I find they give an instant facelift. The oils I use make the finished bar ‘silky’. I do love your videos! Thanks🌹I wanted to add that I do not sell any of my products so I can talk about the wonderful properties in handcrafted soaps😊

This is awesome! I used to use tussah silk when I first started making soap, while I can tell the difference between the soap with or without, it wasn't impactful enough and I don't use it for any other product so I decided to eliminate it from my recipe and just use other ingredients for additives that I can use in other products. I am intrigued though by using something more easily obtained.

I make a face soap with dandelion extract (both the silks in the lye, and dandelion infused olive oil) and fragrance it with lemon and tea tree essential oils ... My sister who has chronic cystic acne has noticed a reduction in breakouts since she started exclusively using this soap. What part of the soap is helping? Who knows ... could be any of it ... but it is a beautiful soap none the less lol

Im not vegan, but is consider the way silk is extracted from the silk worm is unethical so i would look for the plant silk alternatives. Milk thistle seeds are delicious to eat, so i guess dandelion seeds could be similar. Corn silk is another type of plant silk i will be collecting. ❤

As a vegan I find it strange to consider silk vegan but not honey. I think hardcore vegans wouldn’t feel silk is vegan at all. So if someone was selling their soap with silk as vegan they should be cautious. If it’s for you and your family do you.
@Abutado
@Abutado Жыл бұрын
I agree, I would liken it to honey and that's generally seen as non vegan, being a byproduct and all that. Of course, there seems to be differing views within the vegan community. Me personally, not being vegan or even vegetarian, would not classify any soaps with silks or honey or any other product not plant based as being vegan, it feels misleading. At craft fairs I clarify that it's not considered fully vegan for these reasons, and sometimes people searching for vegan products still opt for it, and that's their choice, but it's an educated and not misleading choice.

Yup, one of the reasons I don’t mess with beeswax or silks. I am not vegan but run a vegan line so it all gets eliminated.
