FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER: I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

I had trouble with the amount of stick pull (loops, cuban eights, etc.) until I understood that to create a constant radius the rate of change of pitch is directly related to the airspeed. The pull force is whatever is required to achieve a consistent radius. The stick force and the g-load will change throughout. I am reliving the Sportsman sequence vicariously through your vids. THANKS! Nice job flying. PS: I never placed well in competitions, but it sure was fun.

@FlightChops
@FlightChops 3 жыл бұрын
I started with soaring - you can learn basically ALL the fundamentals in a glider! I'd argue that most power pilots that start with soaring have much better understanding of energy management and rudder work. The only complaint I have about starting flying where every approach as a force approach, is that the "Go Around" is not a part of my primacy, so I often work harder than a should to save an unstable approach, when aborting and going around to try again would be the better idea.

If I ever make it out to Manitoba... and lose 40-50 lbs to get back under the Extra's 'recommended' passenger weight... ;) Through the 00's, I took the opportunity to fly the Pitts S-2C (SkyThrills in LA), Extra 300L (Airplane Co. in Orlando), and CAP-10 (Kaimana Aviation in Honolulu). Expensive, per ride, but nowhere near what it costs to continuously fly GA aircraft! Though performance like that tends to spoil you. Spins and stalls are nothing! Easily recoverable within 500' or so. Now, step back and try that with a Cessna or Piper... ;)

@FlightChops

@studiomacfilms
@studiomacfilms 3 жыл бұрын
The coordination may help. The more important aspect is the tempo and timing. If you watch great acro pilots it’s like they are flying to a click track or metronome. Lines before and after rolls are equal length. Rolls rates are constant etc. If you have a good internal clock I think it really helps. Look at Rob Holland...world champion Acro pilot and amazing musician. It’s not a coincidence.

@troyjollimore4100
@troyjollimore4100 3 жыл бұрын
Years ago, I took an 'Aerobatic Ride' with The Airplane Co. out of Sanford, Florida in the Extra 300. I was taking it a bit easy, so my one mistake at the end of 45 minutes was telling the pilot, "Show me what this thing can really do." After some Humpty-Bumps coupled with Lomcevaks for a few minutes I was crying, "Stopppp!" He was expecting me to get sick, but I was pulling the plug well clear of that point! He was impressed, and told me the answer to your question. Some pilots, like his wife, never get over it. They literally can't take any sort of extreme aerobatics, especially with negative G's. Some naturally don't get queasy or sick. He said most pilots, of which I would probably be one, get violently ill when pressed through these maneuvers over, and over, and over... However, after a few days to a week or so of it (Say two to three hours a day), the sickness goes away, and you should be good after that.

At 13 minutes, with the wing rocks do 2 on the diving 45 line, then pull level, do one more, then start. If you do 3 then pull, the judges may count that pull as an additional figure. They shouldn't but....I don't take that chance. The base leg entry is a good point.

Hannah's flight is actually the 4th episode of the series. Dave's solo is next (3rd), and my final sequence work is 5th. But I do need to fit in a "build vlog" before I get more of this series out - that said it shouldn't affect the over all timing of spacing these out every 2 weeks (parts 1 and 2 being a week apart is an anomaly - I usually can't publish that fast). I also have a multi part Alaska series to finish... People are wanting those to keep going too - so the struggle is real to create elaborate content that covers stories which can't be told in just 20 mins.

It's too bad the tail cam had to mount to the rudder counterbalance; made it hard to see if the nose was moving. Kinda laughed when you'd scratch your nose after your fast rolls... like extreme maneuvers cause your moustache to tickle it! I wonder how many aerobatic rides have caused nosebleeds. To be honest, watching this is intimidating for me right now. Flown twice in the past week and still feeling rusty... nothing big, just small bits of irritating sloppiness.
