Testing a KitchenAid Pasta Pusher

I unbox and test my new KitchenAid Pasta Pusher AKA extruder. It works well, albeit slowly. I made some small tube pasta, tubetti, for a pot of Pasta Fagioli - pasta and bean soup. The results were very good. Cleanup is a task, but not a difficult one. This accessory would be especially fun to use when guests come to dinner.

That looks like a fun new toy Dennis! Home made pasta is just so delicious and the pasta & bean soup looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing!

I am SO looking forward to getting the vaccine so that I will feel safe going to the store again. I want to buy fruits and vegetables to use in my juicer again. Thanks for the comment. (My twin lives in Florida too.) -Dennis

if anyone needs this thing it is you, thats for sure. you must be some kind of expert on pasta fazoli at this point. glad to see you are still working through your stash of beans. i wonder if someone is producing brass dies for this machine. ive always heard those make the best pasta. what do i know, im not italian and i dont make pasta (ive made egg noodles for soup by hand many times). great video dennis! i was going to compliment you on the black shirt, looking good, i had a laugh when you admitted it may not have been appropriate uniform for work with flour! be well my friend.

Thanks for the comment. I looked into the possibility of bronze dies, or even for extra ones for other shapes, but came up with nothing. I made pasta fagioli again for dinner this evening because I have a lot of cooked beans in the fridge. Gotta use them up. It wasn't as good I would have liked. I tried making it from memory rather than reading my recipe. And, thankfully, I didn't mess up that black shirt with flour. -Dennis

Homemade pasta is so easy with the right machine. And it seems more satisfying because there is protein from the eggs. -Dennis

Dennis, It just hit me, you can use the tool that came with the pasta machine to open the dies. If you use the fat end of the pic tool I think you will be able to push the plastic half out from the metal side. It may take a little finagling but ill bet that is what the fat end of the tool is for.

I looked at it. There is no place to grip the metal while pushing out the plastic. How much do you know about plastic? If I were to thinly coat the friction grip points with a little mineral oil to help with separation, would that oil degrade the plastic? The mineral is in a plastic bottle; so I feel somewhat safe. The oil is "USP" - safe for human consumption.-Dennis

Mineral oil is a distillate of petroleum oil, plastic is made from petroleum oil so I think they would play well together. You know what it's like trying to get oil off plastics, they have an affinity for each other.

I just watched that KitchenAid Pasta Attachment cleaning video and I would not use a knife. I would get a set of iFixit Opening Picks or the iOpener kit. Using a knife is only going to degrade the edge over time. You think KitchenAid would know that you are going to get build-up of pasta in the die and give you a way to open the die to clean it out.

I'm glad you saw that video. You confirm some of my hesitation. The two parts fit together so tightly, there is no gap to get a tool into. I had to use a very sharp paring knife and a small mallet to open a gap. I think a little sanding of the plastic at one edge will create a gap to make separation easier next time. I put a set of those tools on my Amazon wish list. Thanks for the suggestion. -Dennis
