Testing a Mk1 VW Coolant Fan Switch

The Cabby started running hot and I noticed that the cooling fan was not running. In this video I quickly demonstrate how to isolate and test if the cooling fan switch is to blame. This style switch is used on many water-cooled Volkswagens.

Great video for sure, I like that jumper trick with the fan. Don’t forget to put the gasket on that switch or it will leak.

got stuck in traffic and the steam started popping out and im damn sure the fan didnt kick in to cool it down. This will help thanks

This was great, exactly the same symptoms, same results with the test. However when I replaced with a new temp switch still not kicking in. Could it be something else?

Possibly an issue with the cooling fan relays. Models with ac should require the key to be on for the high speed fan to work using the jumper wire test....and a good fan relay...if I understood the vw mechanic correctly in the video I watched before this one. Also, turning on the ac should make the fan come on regardless of engine temperature. If it doesn't it may be a relay problem. That also makes me wonder if the ac compressor's electro magnetic coil could be part of the fan's circuitry. A faulty ac clutch coil could be something to check into. Sometimes when the ac compressor fails and seizes up, unplugging the coil will allow the pulley to spin freely. Not a big deal unless the fan circuitry is relying on that connection too.

@@ollieguyon glad you got it figured out. Yesterday I learned there is a pressure switch on the ac drier, and if the refrigerant pressure is too low, it won't allow the electro magnet to engage the ac compressor, which will prevent the fans from activating when the ac is button is pressed because there will be two places where that circuit is open. If anyone reading this wants to test their system by using a jumper wire to bypass their pressure switch, they should also use a jumper wire to bypass the ac compressor coil because the compressor's oil is mixed with the refrigerant, and engaging it without oil will seize the compressor and burn the belt.
