I tried out the Scott Pursuit thumb button release and the Scott Longhorn Hex Hinge Release (also known as a back tension release). I love testing archery gear because what will work for one person might not work for another. There is a lot of trial and error involved in archery, especially for beginners! Whether you're learning how to shoot a compound bow, or are interested in upgrading to a hinge or thumb button release, I hope you enjoy this video!

Really enjoy your videos. Personality goes a long way when one is teaching because it holds the attention of the student. One personal tidbit not related to hunting but any material be it metal, ceramic, wood etc. can't be warmer or colder than the ambient temperature it is exposed to. Metal may "feel" colder or warmer but in comparison to say wood the surface temperature in degrees you feel is exactly the same. The surface temperature just sheds heat quicker on one than the other but the temperature stays exactly the same. Again your videos have greatly impressed my 11 year old grand daughter who shoots lights out with fingers with a twin cam compound, string pinch and all, is going to a release for the 1st time this coming week. I have a few for her to try but your videos have her mesmerized and now she wants to also try a thumb. This young lady is a natural and I pray she stays with it. The first time my hunting buddies saw her shoot they were literally speechless and one is a high score competition shooter. He told me in confidence he believes she has the talent, if she continues to progress as she has in such a short period of time (3 weeks) that with her incredible natural form and confidence, a equipment upgrade and a knowledgeable coach that the sky is the limit. Pop is obviously proud. I had the opportunity and the talent in football years ago and I let it slip away. Maybe I can live my dream through her. We will see.

Good morning Allie, new to your channel but its becoming a favorite. I love the energy and passion you bring to bow hunting and the outdoors. Advocates like you will bring numerous young people into the sport. Just a little observation that will help on your accuracy. From center / right your form is good, from center / left its off. Your brace arm (left arm) is bent at the elbow when it should be locked out. The easiest explanation for that is your draw length is to short, maybe a inch and a half off. Just trying to help! Keep the videos coming, i can see you on the Outdoor Channel soon!!!!

I switched earlier this year from a traditional index release to that same Scott Pursuit and I absolutely love it. If you can, try it sort of hinge style. Place your thumb against the button then when set bring in your pinkie and ring finger, sort of a pivot movement. Works very smoothly and helps keep you from punching the shot.

I got started with a thumb release before moving to a hinge release for my practice. I found actuating with my fingers up to the click, then with my back for the release has gotten me great results, so it's cool that you came to a similar conclusion. I'm yet to go on my first hunt. I'll probably go back to a thumb release for when that day comes, but at the same time I love how a hinge release feels to shoot with. Great content 👍

Good job with the thumb release, anchor points look great and you shot it well. I really like the fact that I can clip my thumb release on my bow while hunting and leave it there. I don't like having a wrist release on, even the ones that fold back. I also have a second thumb release as a back up if I ever drop it, so far to date Ive never dropped one. I would consider the back tension release for target archery ( shooting spots) but not for hunting. Although, some hunters use them and are great with them. Great review !

I also started with a hinge this month, how I learned it was index and thumb for extra grip to draw the bow. Slowly letting go of the index and thumb and allowing your middle finger to tension or cause the hinge starts to click then continue that motion to break the hinge to release the arrow from the d-loop. Sorry, if my explanation is unclear.

I will say one thing I had an idea of going to a back tension release for any idea of leaving my Scott release that I love so much you have definitely convinced me not to change and stay away from back tention release. So I thank- you for not only waiting my time but save 200 bucks thankyou again. Oh and you did a great job on demonstrating both releases. The one release you did not demenstrate is the true ball release. It gives you a smoother release because your not hooking up with a D loop but a very slippery alliminum ball that also turns your peep so you have the most perfect view threw your peep. The difference is the ball you have to set up on your string, you won't need the D loop cause you have the the ball it is faster and lighter then The D loop. You should try it im sure your followers would be interested in seeing it. Its made by true ball its called true ball release. They have a wide variety of releases. Check them out.

Dont let this video keep you from using a hinge...i switched to one and will never use a different release even when hunting. When properly shot its the best shot you can make. I strongly suggest to try one out in a pro shop or pick one up. Tru ball makes some great hinges.

They make hinge releases with a thumb peg which I find it helps pulling it back. When I shot a hinge it was a 3 finger hinge and with a thumb peg which I found it helped a lot. It did not have a strap on it. I love my hinge. I will shoot indoor archery with my hinge but hunt with my index finger release

Loved the bow build vids. Quick tip, when using a thumb button try and wrap your thumb all the way around the peg so that the peg is on ur hand in between your pointer finger and thumb, the tip of your thumb should be resting on the part of the release above your pointer finger then you want to pull your pinky back to activate it. Doing all that eliminates every way you could punch the trigger. Just my two cents. Keep up the great vids.

Hey Allie, the method that works for me on a thumb button and has made me a better shot is just slowly release pressure of your index finger and don’t do any pulling or adding pressure to the thumb. It will automatically transfer the holding weight into your thumb and middle and ring finger which will make it go off

But now i have the truball beast xt with the straight trigger and i like the open hook because its fast and easy to hook on the d-loop and its very crisp in the break. Kinda like a good quality rifle trigger feel to it. And there is an adjustment screw for trigger travel before it releases. Not for sensitivity though.

You can use your fingers with success, you just slammed it back too fast. You should have the release click as you come into anchor and have a good 5-6 seconds after before it goes off. In your comments it appears like you prefer the thumb button. For you to shoot better, you should go shorter with the trigger and not use the tip of your finger. Set it to be able to wrap your thumb around it, and then use back tension to fire. You will need to increase trigger tension to be able to wrap finger around trigger. This method is also suggested for index finger triggers too. Good luck.

The release needs to be adjusted more so that your fingers are deeper into the two finger positions. Squeeze the the lever back into the click and then execute your shot using back tension. You do not want to be using the tips of your fingers and fire this release off like a index trigger style release. If you are using finger pressure to fire this then you are not using back tension. I hope this helps and none of us are perfect in anything we do so remember practice doesn't make perfect it makes good habits or bad habits.

When you shoot push on the bow as you use backtension as if your between two walls pushing equally on both and slowly let off pressure on the thumb side. The worst shot you can make is “punching” a hinge as its far less forgiving than a trigger style

You can press the lock button first with the jaw in the open position and then lock it in around the d-loop. Also, you should practice your draw, you are bring the bow way to high up and it will cause physiological problems in your elbow and shoulder. You should have the bow level, while using your lats to pull the bow back. Not to mention that when you raise your bow up like that, it isolates your biceps and you are using your biceps to pull the bow back rather than using your large lats and back muscle. You back and lats are much stronger than your biceps.

And American. the older longer limb bows are far more forgiving on shooting errors. i could take my prolines at 20 yards shooting a black bullseye about the size of your little fist , draw, anchor, sight. shut my eyes , Estes few seconds, relaced. open my eyes still in the bullseye about every time. the newer fast bows in the last 20-25 years extremely hard to do that because those little short limbs are extremely unforgiving. the last compounds I had before building my longs , if I didn’t pull off I would put 10 size 1816 Eastons in a 50 cent peace size group easy at 20 yards . but you pull off just a little I would shoot all over the target and that I hated about those short limbs. y’all can have them. I’ll stick with the old , tried and true and kill as much or more game as anyone else if my health will allow it. good hunting my little friend. nana and papa aka the hunter

Dear Allie i love here in NC hunting in area’s that is so thick they have to pipe in extra sun shine . the place you have to cut a trail just to get to the stand. then cut a shoot ing lane.😃the nicest buck I’ve been blessed to kill when i first saw him he was 14 yards away. the shine of his eye gave him away. that’s all I could see . he took a step forward and I could see very little of him . he slipped through that mess. poked head out. looked around steps out , my heart was beating like a Indian drum , my right leg went to jerking and my foot patting the bottom of my stand. I softly may have said lord I need your help . he stopped 15 yards perfectly broad side . as I drew back my long bow I thought lord help my arrow fly true. I relived . it sounds like you hit someone in the chest . he stands there 3-4 seconds like what just happened. runs of , about 55-65 yards, took about a hour track him because it was so dang thick in there and not leaving much blood, chest filled up. found him then came the work getting him out by my self. I had to crawl some to get to him. he was a huge 8 point around180-200 pound on the hoof and my first kill with a diy long bow out of maple. best deer ever took with any bow ever . hope you enjoy the read . Back tensions don't feel natural to ANYONE right out the gate. I use them all the time (I switch between a traditional index trigger, thumb and hinge) and it still shakes me up sometimes

I’ve been wanting to try a thumb button for a while now and I love my Scott index releases. You might be happier with the regular Longhorn or Longhorn Micro hinge release as it has the grip for your index finger and also a thumb stud to help you hold it while drawing. Also, you are supposed to shoot a hinge by rotating your fingers back towards your pinkie while holding back tension. Like someone else said, you also can shoot a thumb button the same way by wrapping your thumb around the trigger and then rotating back with your pinkie. A true back tension release fires from increased back pressure, a hinge does not.

Your hand at a bad angle on your face. It should be at about 45 degrees. Yours is almost at 90. Try pulling through to set off the release not actually using the button to fire per se.

You're not using the hinge release correctly. Grip the release and pull back, the click and shot come from back tension. Usually target archers use the hinge release, not bowhunters.
