Years ago I experimented with 12V bilge pump cartridges and a variety of RC props to power a kayak. Worked surprisingly well, although yours is certainly a much more elegant solution.

Dude! Insane amount of power out of such small thrusters. It was obvious that you can't even get an accurate reading with the flex of the pivot shaft. Need to reinforce the test structure to really gauge. I bet your output is near double what it registered under that current test structure's limits.

Very nice. I remember when ROVs were all the rage during the drone craze. A couple of capstones projects were focused on them. I have always like the OpenROV project.

Also for a fun summer project in high school I made a simple ROV that used bilge pumps that had the case cut off of them. They worked great.

I have 2 of these thrusters on the way. I'm planning to attach them to my paddleboard. It looks like they make enough thrust to move a paddleboard around pretty well. I am planning to steer using differential thrust for my first attempt. Hopefully it will make enough differential to turn/rotate.

Just noticed you are using a Differential Gasket to make the seal. That is very creative. Also would make for a cool cover. Really like where the project is going. Just picked up some of those thruster if I ever getting around yo making an ROV

This is cool. I am interested in knowing how durable these thrusters are. Let me know what you find in your testing. I am designing a drone that will stay in water for hours or could be even days. I am trying to find out if these thrusters are reliable or not.

I am working on a rov project myself, and been eyeballing these same thrusters as a stopgap before spending a bunch of money on T200's. I don't want to spend a grand on motors til I know what I'm doing a little more. I am curious what kind of depth these can handle.

haha, well if this doesn't work out for a drone, you can probably convert over to a Bass Boat and be able to compete in the MLF. Holy &hit that's a lot of thrust :)

Isn't the speed just directly related to the velocity of the water coming out the back? Is there no simplified equation to get estimated max speed?

I guess that would give you a theoretical max speed if the motor has enough thrust to propel the boat. If you attached a pressure washer to a larger boat, it's not going to move the boat at over 200mph even though that's the velocity of the water coming out of the nozzle. There are rough boat speed calculators online but I imagine a realistic formula would be pretty complicated and also depend on the boat shape, displacement, motor type, efficiency etc.
