Yes, but even if I do a pencil work and ordinary print paper or some random notebook, it does not guarantee that they will not laugh in my face, although they may take it as modern art and offer me a millionaire, it's not what I'm looking for .. Okay, I will try it (?
@PetrikNZ
@PetrikNZ 6 жыл бұрын
Very true. Quality supplies will certainly help getting you less frustrated but they alone won't improve your ability. I noted that in my photography days when film was still the medium. You had these cheap plastic throwaway cameras. Our local newspaper photographer took one for a spin once and the results were great. Why? Because he knew his craft inside out and was aware of the limitations of the tool and worked within those, and of course he knew the art of composing the shot too which is a universal skill all visual artists need to learn, your expensive paints won't be doing that for you. And so it is with any art form. Once you know your craft you can create beauty with less than ideal equipment because you'll be in tune with its limitations.

Seeing the price tags on the paints from Hobby Lobby made me think: Never buy anything from Hobby Lobby (or Michaels) without using a coupon. There is ALWAYS a coupon online for 40% off. Nearly everything in those stores is marked way up. When you use a coupon and get 40% off, you're not getting a bargain, you're getting the item for the price you should pay.
@chevaliedelareverie
@chevaliedelareverie 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Not using the coupon (or buying stuff on sale) is such a waste! Also, always compare prices with Blick. Sometimes buying at Hobby Lobby/Michael's with a coupon ends up being a better deal than even Blick or Amazon :D

Really loved both versions and you can't really tell what acrylic paint you used where! I think that the left just looks a little more vibrant than the 2nd version you did with the cheap paint! For me I really enjoy painting with thicker acrylic paint because it just feels nicer to have a solid color that you can work with instead of a watery type of paint that doesn't cover anything! I think if you start out it's great to have at least a few higher quality paints so you see the difference and experiment! Sometimes beginners give up painting because they feel frustrated as they don't achieve the result they were hoping for. And sometimes it's really due to bad art supplies. I think that if you are more experienced you can totally make cheap art supplies work for you! You just need to learn how to paint by practicing first and then even cheap supplies won't be a problem!

I agree completely with what's said in the video; expensive paints are less transparent and great for solid coverage. Since I'm used to painting in layers, I generally use cheap paints but I do splurge a bit on professional black and white, just to get those really pure colours. A good artist can make a $2 paint look professional, while $20 paints won't make you a good artist without the practise behind it.
@PHeMoX
@PHeMoX 6 жыл бұрын
I kind of have to disagree with that last sentence. I understand what you mean to say, but the good artist using more expensive paint would actually make it look professional beyond just great. It is true that $20 paints aren't going to make a beginner look like a professional painter without the practice, but at least such a beginner would generally not have to 'fight the cheap paint' in terms of opacity, colour accuracy and colour mixing. It really helps when a higher grade paint retains it's vibrancy and original colour, instead of greying out or turning purple instead of pink in case of a real red. I think the importance of the cadmium colours and higher quality paints in general is a bit underrated. I personally do not really believe in 'perfect tools' for painting (palette knives or brushes), but when the actual paint has different properties it's kind of a different discussion altogether. Even when in the end there's nothing wrong with learning to paint using cheaper paints.
@laurahawkins374
@laurahawkins374 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with what you're saying completely. The colour mixing issues you're mentioning is one of the biggest drawbacks I've found to the cheap paints, though for experimentation and studies I do think that cheap paints are more suited simply because of the lack of 'oh god what if i waste it/ruin it'. I agree that there aren't 'perfect tools' as it depends on each person's own style and preference, and I am not for a second denying that the expensive paints are superior because they are, for all the reasons you've said. I just think that there's such a big push (in my local community at least) to buy all the quality supplies and much less emphasis on the learning and practising aspects. I believe that, for a non-professional, rather than buying expensive paints the money would be better spent by getting cheap paints (or just two or three professional paints) and investing time/money into art classes and practise (be it online or at a school) as there's so much to painting beyond 'add colours'. I appreciate the response and the chance to expand on it ^-^

I usuallu use pretty cheap paints and one other reason (beside their chepness) is that, with more cheaper paints, I don't have to worry about messing up so much :D with expensive art tool I usually get stressed that I have waisted the paint, if it dosen't end up the way I wanted. So I personnally prefer the cheaper ones,but maybe someday I could have the courage to try more expensive ones :D Awseome video as always ❤

I used to use only cheap acrylics and I think that if you're a beginner they're really great because you don't worry as much about wasting paint, however in the lighter hues like yellow and white you are just seriously limited in the coverage you can get unless you leave the area completely light from the beginning. I also think mixing pastel colours, for portraits for example, is a lot more difficult because the white will become more translucent as is dries and the colours will become too dark. that's why I've been tending towards more expensive acrylics. Also if you've used cheap ones I think you learn to really appreciate when paint is properly pigmented.

There isn’t as much pressure to make something amazing when using cheap materials...when using more expensive art supplies, I’m more afraid to waste them, so will avoid experimentation...and that makes me sad! On the other hand, when using more expensive materials, there are not as many quirks. Paints dry truer to the original colors, are more intense and vibrant, go on a bit smoother, and can be easier to work with. Expensive brushes feel more buttery and provide more control. Expensive substrates provide additional benefits too...more expensive canvas is thicker and a totally different experience than the cheap stuff. And I never have to “stretch” or otherwise prime expensive watercolor paper. I can just get into it and paint. The cheap stuff is still important...I think when you’re learning and the materials you’re using are a bit harder to work with, you are presented with more challenges, have to be more careful, and definitely practice being patient. This has kind of been my experience across the board.

So I have been using the Grumbacher Academy paints because they have a heavier body than the Liquitex Basics without being way more expensive... however I ended up getting some Windsor Newton paints of the same grade and vibrancy and coverage is so much better. You do get less, but I found I was using about a quarter of the paint I was using in the Grumbacher paints. I was totally converted!

I wonder if it's most worth it to buy the expensive versions of white and black or brown, and use them mixed with the cheaper versions so you get that brightness and depth without springing for a whole set of expensive ones. Maybe I'll do that! Cool comparison

Justine Semidea Yeah I think this is more of a student vs professional/artist grade. Liquitex is a good brand in general. I think Liquitex is comparable to winsor and newton, both have different lines in their paints, one cheapER for students/beginners and one for professionals and those who earn money with art. But even the student grade paints aren't really cheap, just cheapER than the pro versions.

Fantastic breakdown and comparison!!! I would say my experiences have been the same. The first time I had an expensive paint on my brushes, and on my canvas, I couldn't stop blubbering about how rich, deep in color, and smooth it was it was to paint. However, there's a drawback - if you can't afford the paint - you're not going to buy much - and you're going to likely hoard/conserve it. I've done it - I actually hoarded two tubes of lovely VERY expensive paint colors, only to find out they both dried out (probably my own fault) - and I had to throw them away. So double the loss. If all you have to paint with are children's paints from a dollar store - then PAINT with them!!! If you're more likely to paint with the cheaper paints - then do so - be proud - and don't look back.

Sometimes the cost difference is like literally tenfold. But I would say the higher pigment strength of the higher quality acrylics can generally be worth the money for pieces that really require the more intense colour for higher realism or strongest possible contrast. Depending on the size of a piece one might still consider mixing in cheaper paint where it's less of an issue. But some paints just never can get as strong as the high pigment ones, no matter how much cheap paint you use. I'm sure some of the larger more abstract stuff is made with not the most expensive paint perhaps. But it does kind of come at a cost in quality. When it comes to beginners, I would probably not focus too much on the best quality of paint at first, but it is definitely important to not have to 'fight the medium' by going too cheap. This is true for oil paints too. Because some cheaper reds in oil paints aren't 'pure reds', meaning they won't mix to a pink with white but instead mix to a purple colour. Same goes for paints that might end up being less opaque or lack the expected mixing properties. It's very important to know your oil paints when it comes to this or you will end up fighting the paint itself. I've especially noticed this a lot with cheaper watercolours I've used in the past. It can be a real struggle as a beginner.

Well who knows eh? Your a joy to watch and I hope you continue to enjoy doing videos as much as we enjoy watching you do them! I do know that cheaper paints use extenders and fillers that can cause the paint to change color after drying as well as "thin" the actual pigment and medium that can cause the bond to the canvas or sub-strait (board in your case) to fail. I am always concerned that my paintings last especially if I am selling them to people I do not know personally! Well another wonderful Video Robin! Thanks!

Hue means the colour is created from more than one pigment. Generally the Pro paints are all single pigment paints (there are a few exceptions and they'll have "hue" as part of the name) In the case of the Liquitex Heavy Body you can see the pigments that are in the paint on the back of the tube (eg. Yellow Medium Azo is a PY74 pigment) So the reason people tend to talk about fighting with their cheap paints comes down to two things. Firstly they tend to have less pigment and more filler/emulsion and secondly, because they are Hues (ie. several colours mixed to get the look of the pure pigment) when you are mixing colours you are not mixing pure colours as each paint is already a mix of colour. So the end result is that you end up with "mud" a lot faster with the cheap paints. To really practice your colour mixing try the following in Liquitex Heavy Body. A nice limited palette that will be able to get you pretty much any colour you'll need. Naphthol Red Light Phthalo Blue Green Shade Quinacridone Crimson Titanium White Yellow Medium Azo

I honestly think it's all a matter of preference. Everyone has a different opinion on it. I could make a case for both sides. And then most times the subject of having more expensive supplies, and how it won't improve your artwork per se, comes up. Again, I could make valid points for both sides. I like both same as you Robin. I have made some lovely pieces with both types of paint. Other mediums though can be a bit different. I've made some fantastic portraits, (or so I'm told lol), with a set of more expensive coloured pencils and a pad of premium professional paper that I wasn't able to achieve with the cheaper supplies I had. The issue for me was I could never afford the nicer sets. So I worked with what I had. When I was gifted those things, I was beyond blessed, but was also blown away by what I could achieve with them that I wasn't able to before. But again, all comes down to preference. I think if you have the proper fundamentals, and you keep on practicing, any artist can create a beautiful piece of artwork out of whatever tools are at their disposal. You work with what you've got right? You've created some beautiful pieces here luv. I quite like em both! Loads of love n such, and hope you're having a lovely time with your family. x

Thanks for this vid. Given the cost of even the cheap acrylics, it's incredibly helpful to see a comparison of how they work. The cheap range look like they'd be great for students just learning - and for crafters! For miniatures, where you would probably be thinning the paints anyway, the cheaper, thinner ones would be just great.

Such energic you are 😁. And this video you made was so helpful. Thank you. I just wanted to tell you something I accidentaly found out about coating. Draw the same thing you brushed at 3:00 on a piece of paper and look at the sun or a lamp through it. You will see how the paint is coated the paper. I have never used heavy body paint so I check the coating of my drawing like this 😜

I use all Liquitex Heavy Body paints plus one tube of Basic Titanium White for the translucency and lower viscosity! It's actually different from mixing the heavy body with slo-dri medium and more pleasant for certain purposes. Somewhat similar to mixing in airbrush medium though.

I think the more you work with a product or brand, whether expensive or cheap, you learn better techniques and skills to utilize the product to its full potential. I loved both paintings :)

I agree entirely- each has a place! In this particular case though, I like the translucency you got from the cheaper acrylics.

Hey Robin! I think the cheap one looks more real because you can capture the natural imperfections

When you said about building up layers: I agree this is nice. I preferred that painting myself (thought it was the expensive one!!) because of the nice transparency

Hey Robin! I did a painting with the Liquitex Basics acrylic paints about 3 years ago. My experience with that (since I was in school and didn't have enough money to buy the more expensive brand of acrylic paints) was great! The fluidity and the colors were just as good as the expensive ones (and I tested those after I had enough money). The only complaint that I have with them is that they are not archival. The paint will, after a few months, start to peel and crack. Aaaaand that was my complaint to those but if anyone wants to paint, the cheap brand especially the Basics one is probably one of my best cheap brands. Paint with whatever works right now and gradually graduate to a more archival, longer lasting kind. Loved your video by the way!! 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

Just learned the other day that Liquitex just came out with a cadmium free heavy body acrylic. Why is this cool? Because cadmium is a carcinogen. 👍

I bought golden artist colors and shin han paints after practicing for a couple of years. the big difference I saw was when I was tinting the colors with white. especially with the browns. student grade paints have a tendency to look gray or muted from tinting but artist grade paints do have that vibrancy as you mentioned. I love vibrant paintings and doing thicker layers. Right now, I’m experimenting with impasto so I super love my golden artist colors and shin han paints.

One of my painting instructors used to say that if all Michaelangelo had was a bucket of mud and a mop, he still would've done an amazing job on the Sistine Chapel.

I like your video! You're pretty talented painter, and you are succinct with the information which I really appreciate. I've noticed with my heavy body paint, I have to break it down with an extender or polycrylic, too much water has given me bad experiences . Some of it is just so so thick! Thank you for a very good tutorial
