More info that was promised-
What is likely happening is that the sharks can smell the blood but it's just not in a quantity that is interesting to them especially since they don't love human blood that much (btw, I spoke with a marine biologist and mammal blood is all the same from a chemical marker stand point so cow blood is a suitable substitute for human blood). If I did the experiment again, I would want to test human blood vs. fish blood.
This is the most definitive study done to date in a control lab environment on what is least and most interesting to them: The Biology of Sharks and Rays Peter A. Klimley and Steven Oerding; ISBN-13: 9780226442495. Particularly pages 134-140. Figure 6.7; Table 6.2

Summary: I've always wanted to test if sharks can really smell a single drop of blood in the water from 1 mile away. So I went to the Bahamas in shark infested waters and set up an experiment to get to the bottom of things.

Other possible extraneous variables: -these sharks learned not to bother with these boards after the first experiment -other shark types react differently -these sharks had just eaten -no boat to distract may put a higher interest in a lone bleeding person at sea

Oh yes, definitely. That's why you shouldn't swim with your dog, they're attracted to the circular motion of the doggy paddle. It's also advised if you see a shark in the water you don't rush out because they can't see you. Most of the time in shark attacks they assume you are some type of seal, take a bite, say "oh sorry man" and swim away.

@@M1nxy_ you can kill a shark by turning it over, as this drowns/floods the brain with seratonin. yes sharks become incredibly dosile when turned over because of this, but can become agressive when trying to right themselves. you can literally cause a shark to overdose on its own seratonin by giving it a rolley-polley

Like humans, sharks can only smell something when particles of it hit the receptors in their nose. So they couldn't smell a drop of blood from a mile away, but they could follow a trail of blood particles to its source.

It’d be super interesting to repeat this experiment off the beach (anchoring boards so they don’t drift back inland) without the presence of a distracting boat, where people are most concerned about shark attacks and less likely to be as shark informed as the ocean divers. Though I imagine at places like the Bahamas the scenario Mark tested on would be more common. Also would love to see a comparison between human vs prey blood (eg tuna, seal etc). The latter would be much harder to obtain ethically.

It would be different if there was a human in the water bleeding, the electrical signals would attract a lot of sharks as well as the blood. On the experiment side it would have been even cooler if there was some doodad that could mimic a panicking person/animal in the water.

Very cool and those sharks are beautiful! What I am wondering is if the sharks in that area are kinda "conditioned" by getting fed by tourists and boat or human focussed? The blood should might better be out of visual range so the sharks cant notice there is no prey. Also curious how this went with either Oceanic whitetip sharks or great whites since those are more aggressive and maybe also more sensitive to potential victims.

Also there isnt really any way to test how hungry the sharks were. I'm sure a hungry shark would be way more enticed by the smell of blood than one that has already eaten earlier. Also, people tend to move around a lot on water, whereas a floating surf board will drift, but not really go anywhere, so maybe the amount of movement makes a difference too.

I think there is one potential confounding variable in this experiment. The sharks are always hanging out near the boat; are they fed regularly from that boat or location? Sharks can be highly opportunistic, so if they are accustomed to being fed from the edge of the boat, why would they leave?
@ItchaBoi

If you talk about time yeah?? Because when the sharks notice they're not going to get anything from the boat they went directly for the liquid. Conclusion is, yes they are attracted to blood (animal blood). But how sensitive it's for them? We can't really say from the video.

Yeh, I'm guessing it's a shark diving excursion boat. They run those trips our of the Bahamas and feed the sharks. So these sharks are trained to behave in a certain way.

Kind of goes with the territory of observing sharks from a boat. Whether the sharks are baited in or just the boat's presence, their behavior is going to be altered in some way.

Okay.. In order to smell the blood the blood actually needs to REACH them. Likewise bears can’t smell food upwind, because the scent isn’t reaching them. If you just drop blood into the water they won’t immediately sense it’s presence magically. Ironic that the “Pixar sits on a throne of lies” caption is during a freeze frame of blood ENTERING BRUCE’S NOSTRIL. Not just floating 50 meters away. This is why the sharks that caught a trail followed the trail.
