The Black Holes are hands up the best practice solution out there. I use mine with L80s and the EAD10 (added gain) and it honestly feels and sounds like you're playing on an acoustic kit in a studio environment but with lower volume.

do you use triggers in the black holes with the ead10 ? I was thinking to do the same but i was worries about the sound quality and if ead would pick the sound/tone

Great video, Adam! I also vote for the Black Holes. They keep more tone & are about 1,000 times easier to use.

A big thing for me is price since I’m in college, the mesh heads are a great option cause you can get a decent set for 80-100 where as the black heads are crazy expensive

Black holes or Aquarian’s super pads are the go to. The ease and simplicity of just popping them on and off are what makes them the go to way to switch from quiet set to full volume in seconds

The tone and volume reduction on the Black Holes is amazing. I just wish it could give better side stick action. You still can get a solid rim shot.

Excellent review! The volume comparison is key. How much higher is the Black Hole (rim) on the drum? Did you need to adjust the heights/angles of the drums and/or your throne to accommodate them?

Great review! I actually practice with mesh heads with triggers on the toms/kick and I close mic w/ effects a snare with mesh head and just bit of duck tape. The sound is decent and I don’t get false triggering. Do you think the Rtom would produce a better overall sound on the snare than what I’m doing? I’m yet to hear anyone actually completely mic up an Rtom with complete effects like a performance kit. Thanks!

that pedal with that extender thing added to it will slip of the bassdrums when you play or even use double pedal hammer... Im sure ...I guess..I think. I guess if they were clever they could have made a hole in the bottom of the rtom so you can clamp fasten your pedal as on the analogue kit... So I dont understand that added bassdrum pedal metal thing is just slipped under the bassdrum like that ..that would simply slide off to right or left if using the pedal wildly as in double hammer etc ??

You didn’t give much feedback / opinion about the Meinl low volume cymbals. From what I could tell, they sounded almost exactly like the Zildjian L80s. Same price, but with a 20” ride instead of an 18” ride.

How do you record with this quality using only one microphone? Is it possible to achieve a good recording without a mixer and only a USB microphone?
@AdamTuminaro
@AdamTuminaro Жыл бұрын
You need 5 things to make a decent drum recording with 1 mic. A mic with a wide polar pattern, good mic placement, an interface, a well tuned drum set, and a decent sounding room. The better EACH of those things get, the better the recording. It’s a giant recipe, and every ingredient matters. Do not use USB mics if you’re seeking higher quality. They’re designed for convenience; not sound quality. This link has several hours of my audio Masterclasses that breaks down all the gear needed to get started recording drums properly in a studio setting: www.orlandodrummer.com/audio-video-masterclasses

im getting lots of double triggering on my trigger. what am i doing wrong? i tried the trigger settings at 1 minimum velocity curve, deleted the layers for one sound on the trigger, 2ms wait time, lower to medium gain, lots of silly double triggering and insane vibrations.
@johnknight9150

If you're at absolute minimum -- and assuming you haven't missed anything -- then you either need different triggers or a different module. Before you have a heart attack, get a mate to check you haven't missed anything, it could be fine (I think Gain is control for this on my DM-5, iirc). Otherwise, you might actually be able to get away with a module off an extremely cheap and generic e-kit. Most modules come with line-in ports, so you might even be able to combine sounds from the two modules to create something functional.

Awesome sounding practice kit! Have you tried other practice cymbals and how would you say these compare to them if you have? I was able to try Sabian Quiet Tones today and the hi-hat was way too loud in the high frequencies and kinda hurt my ears. I've heard that the L80s are quieter but based on the few videos I could find about these Meinls they might be even better! There just isn't much info about them online.

I use Sabian Quiet Tones and love them! I did get a few thick rubber bands and weave 1 through the holes on the edge of each cymbal, it really helped to cut that super high frequency out!

@@rainyjacktheepic Thanks for the tip! Do you have a video or sound clip anywhere of the difference? I already ordered the meinl hi-hat tho and it is very pleasant sounding, but I might wanna try something cheaper for a ride.

Not sure if you are still looking for feedback on this question since it was posed so long ago. I’ve been a longtime Sabian user (essentially my full drumming career of nearly 30 years) and did a side-by-side comparison of the their QuietTone with the Zildjian L80s in my local drum shop several years back. Had to go with the L80s. The tone was so much better. Sabian’s were higher-pitched/pingy whereas the L80s were closer to the dark sound I prefer. Also, FWIW, I employed the warranty on the Zildjian’s for multiple cymbals in the pack (the holes do make these a bit more prone to cracking) and it was zero-hassle. Sent them the cracked cymbal and they sent me a new one quickly.
