jatos are rockets (fuel directly burned to create thrust), jet engines are completely different (air is collected and compressed and fuel is added). jet engines can be used instead of normal internal compression engines in regular vehicles though they aren't practical and the idea never caught on.

A jet engine and JATO is quite different, excluding the fact that both use thrust propulsion. A JATO is a rocket, and has no moving parts. A jet is a turbofan combustion engine (has moving parts).
