Check out THESE refugium lights! brs.li/Fuge_Lighting
Today on BRStv, we have a brand new episode for our series, BRStv Investigates. In this series we explore popular reefing theories, products, methods, and what the manuals are missing, with a focus on putting them to the test!
We were very surprised and pleased with the final results of the Chaeto test and Ryan shares some of the highlights. We found that Chaeto can, not only, remove a significant amount of nutrients but may actually be capable of being the primary source of nutrient reduction for the entire tank!
In this episode, we also review the PAR and PUR results for each of the lights we used in test phase one, as well as the final weights of each ball of Chaeto's growth.
So follow along as we close out the first phase of the Chaeto test and preview what's coming up in the next test, as we try to help you make reefing a bit more fun and easy!
As always, there’s much more to investigate as we continue this series, so watch for future episodes where we put Pukani rock through the curing process test and TONS more!
See you next time on BRStv Investigates !

I have to say that your methodology and reporting are outstanding! I hold two college degrees in life and health sciences. To see an experiment of this level performed for hobbyist benefit is very impressive. I hope you are publishing and perhaps even have an association with a department at a university. Great work! The entire reef/salt community should really appreciate all the time, effort and resources that you guys are putting into this kind of a production. As someone who has done research at a collegiate level I can tell you that this is not easy. Please keep up the outstanding work.

Outstanding test and video series. I've been running the H350 after switching from the shop light setup and can attest to the absolute depletion of Nitrate in my system (well as far as the Red Sea Pro Nitrate test shows). I just pruned a sizable ball of Chaeto from the fuge this morning and noticed it has the same light green, almost Easter grass looking color and texture. Now I'm trying to raise my Nitrates in the system which is a new problem to solve. Go figure... Keep the videos coming, I appreciate the science/chemistry aspect of reef keeping and your videos make Fridays that much more fun.

I think this is my 4th time watching this and in relation to the latest BRS/WWC Hybrid series looking back on this is SUPER interesting. I think now that there seems consenus that zero phosphates and nitrates are not a good thing reefers may more seriously consider the cheaper lights. One important thing to note though is the difference in pH - with the Kessil generating a seriously higher pH. Going back to BRS/WWC hybrid with heavy in / heavy out apparently leading to benefits, I think the benefits or a good fuge light are now much more relevant as it seems you get the benefits of both allowing higher nutrient import as well as higher pH at night. This video is amazing and should be mandatory for any reefer considering a fuge (or reactor). It's also the first time I noticed Ryan's jeans ;)

The attempt to make this as scientific as possible is much appreciated. This hobby needs much more of this kind of testing to improve it's chances of success. The results will surely shed light on the mysteries of what's happening in our real oceans and could impact the health of our planet. So there ya go. The world needs you to get this right! No pressure.

This is a tough one. Scrubbers do normally kill chaeto and other macros, but trying to use the same light for both, in a test, would really weaken a scrubber because a scrubber's advantage is more in the other design components, and their efficiency would be reduced in order to accommodate the fuge light. That's the point of a scrubber: refine the area, attachment, flow, light, etc to maximize photosynthesis (filtering). And upflow scrubbers refine further by using bubbles to deliver CO2 at zero-distance to the algae cells. But this also might be compromised by trying to use a fuge light.

Amazing video. I can tell you that I run a fuge in my 70 gal reef tank with miracle mud and chaeto and I do not use my skimmer and my phosphates are 0.00 with Hanna and nitrates are around 10ppm. I have a small clean up crew 3 turbo snails and 2 shrimp. 10 fish and 30+ corals water is super clear. I am a believer in the fuge and love the effectiveness of it. I also use gfo/carbon reactor which helps. You guys are on the right path with this FAQ. My mandarins feast on the pods that are produced in the fuge as well. I use a strong return pump, which I think is a contributing factor to the success. Thanks for these videos. They are awesome!

Very interesting results, and in a cost-is-no-object test, yes the Kessil H380 is the clear choice; however, few of us really get to entertain the cost-is-no-object scenario and must make difficult choices as to the best way to spend our reefkeeping hobby dollars. For me, and I suspect many others, the answer does not lie in $300 fuge grow lights.

I setup a chaeto reactor using red blue led flexible striplights for 20 bucks and a repurposed GFO reactor. All sides of the chaeto get exposed to intense light but it does not tumble. Flow is controlled by a ball valve. I wonder how important tumbling is beyond exposing surfaces to light. If I have upwelling flow through the chaeto and intense light on all sides, will I get the same growth as spinning ball of chaeto under kesil? Here is what I used: Toogod Full Spectrum 16.4ft/5m 5050 Waterproof LED Strip Plant Growing Light Red Blue 4:1 for Aquarium Greenhouse Hydroponic Pant Garden Flowers Veg Grow Light,DC12V

Yeah, the Hach DR3900 is a nice piece of equipment. It was developed mainly for fresh water waste water testing. Always check the methods against standards.
