The b-kool is an ok product for what it is...heres a tip i've found with any ice chest AC units. cut a piece of insulated foam board to go over the ice to keep the hot intake air from sweeping across the ice. keeps the "air side" and the ice side isolated. Makes ice last MUCH longer and won't carry any excess humidity across the heat exchanger.

Thanks for the advice! I decided to get one of these to try it. The time in my schedule is more valuable than trying to hunt different components down. I was thinking along the lines of what you suggested and couldn't think of the ideal material to use

And put an extension inside of your fan to reach the ice quicker. All around all the room you have in there is gonna be hot air. Run a piece of tubing about 5 inches inside also. I'm just learning what the say radiator cooler or whatever core in the ice. It will recycle itself as cold ice

My logic says the heat exchanger is melting the ice prematurely. Agree with another commenters advice in creating a heat shield over the top of the ice. Have a look at the Australian CoolAir E3 unit. Smaller, quieter and seems way more efficient in its power consumption at 0.7 amps on low speed.. Thanks for the review..

Can I ask you a question. We are thinking about buy a rooftop tent for our truck here soon. The question I had with rooftop tents and hot weather is how to sleep comfortable in those conditions. So I am wondering if this would work to help cool down a rooftop tent enough to be able to comfortably sleep at night. Also not adding mist into the air and have future moisture related issues. I would greatly appreciate your feedback to this scenario use. Thank you! Jess 🙂

You'll want to use block ice, or ice packs. Artic Ice makes ice packs that have more thermal capacity than frozen ice. Combine that with the foam board idea mentioned below, and you'll probably have a long lasting, pretty cool setup. Just make sure you get the 'Alaskan' series ice packs if you go that route, as the other styles will freeze your water that you need to circulate. I ordered a B-Kool for myself, and will try to report back to let you know how it works with that setup

Tommy Etheredge - how’d this approach work?
@tommy35ss
@tommy35ss 4 жыл бұрын
@@staffordcpa Hey, it went pretty good. I never used the foam board, but I do use the ice packs I mentioned combined with regular ice. For the money, you get really good quality and warranty on it, no regrets. I need to start getting it out again but have been lazy as a CFI in using it with my students. I mainly used it on low wings, which got extremely hot, but am no longer regularly instructing in them.

How many ice packs can it hold?
@tommy35ss

@@Beechflyer Mine will hold 3 of the 5 lb Alaska series packs, and then I squeeze a ~1 lb size ice pack in there with them. Doesn't say the size on the small one. I will also put in ice as well

Do a test with frozen bottles of salt water, which is colder than regular ice. Run the air flow underneath the bottles by raising the bottles off the bottom. I've seen people on KZfaq get excellent results with that system

Are you still using it in the plane? Also, what GPH (gallons per hour) and amps is the bilge pump they are using? Looks like it is written on the top of the pump.

Try to run the fan a little bit slower. The more output of your fan melt the ice

This is like trying to cool your house with all of the windows and doors open. Testing this outside will be very inefficient. If tested in a confined space, as the ambient temperature of the room cools, the ice will melt less quickly as it is not exchanging nearly as much heat as it was at the beginning. Try testing again inside your cockpit, or a small room.

could you use dry ice?

Don't use dry ice in confined spaces like cockpits or vehicles. CO2 likes to displace O2 and this could be deadly!

@@luissol3964 FIRE potential. Once a lithium battery carches fire which they are known to do, its almost impossible to extinguish…as the former owner of B-kool, i am officially stating thet .b-Kool does not recommend using a lithium battery with any of its products. We have first hand experience with a LIPO battery randomly catching fire and completely burning down one of our assembly benches. PLEASE DO NOT USE LITHIUM BATTERYS WITH B-kool products
