Some day I will get this knife. Always thought it looked like a winner. I think a bow drill divet of this nature is meant for emergency use, not frequent use. Something there when you need it. Nice presentation brother! 👍

It's a great knife, and I think you're right about the divot, one could probably do something to make it a better bearing block, but it's great the way it is and Esee told me any time those handle scales go bad, just call them and they will send me a new pair.

ESEE is known for their capable knives. Sadly, with a few exceptions, they only use 1095 in their fixed blades, which is a no-go for my coastal environment. Nice idea to hide a ferrorod and tinder-quicks inside the handle and provide a tool to unscrew it, wish more manufacturers would be that thoughtful. The divet in the handle is a smart idea too, but without lubricant it won't hold up - I prefer to put in a small ball-bearing (o/i 12/8mmx5mm) with a 14mm rim, almost zero friction. Notice, they put the divet to the wrong side, the edge doesn't point away from you when using it in a mounted position.

Thanks for the feedback, I am enjoying this Esee and hopefully they come up with a better design for the bearing block part.

@@Bigfootsoutdooradventures - while waiting, you could improve your knife by replacing the ferrorod with the 'Firefly' from Tortoise Gear. It's ment to replace the toothpick in Victorinox' knives and of small, rectangular shape. It should fit into the open space in the handle with the two tinder-quicks after lining the scale with the divet with a plastic or stainless steel liner. Get you a flanged micro ball bearing (e.g. 12/8mmx5mm with a 14mm flange) and drill a 12mm through-hole and a 14mm just 1mm deep to fit the flange. Carefully epoxy it in. The 8mm inner hole is big enough to hold your spindle securely in place. I Think, last time I payed 80€ct. a piece for the ball bearing and they work phantastic! I put one in all outdoor knives, including the Victorinox'. The liner is only needed to cover the hole and keep the tinder dry. The Firefly is quite thin and delicate, so best use is to strike along one of the small sides and supporting the Firefly on an even surface.

@@mannihh5274 Don't forget the intended design of this knife was as a pilot's survival knife. The fire starter and tinder in the handle was intended for last resort. For most other application, carrying a butane (BIC) lighter, storm proof matches, and a regular ferrorod are more practical than removing the handle scales.

Tje best survival knife is the one youhave with you...if you carry quality and versatility on your belt...then when it matters you will have a decent survival knife ...practice with what you carry master the knife you carry..no matter the knife style once you figure out its capabilities and how to use it to over come what might be its short comings that is when you have the best knife for you!

@@Buckeyes216 it's still overpriced for 1095 with a 56-58 Rockwell. It's all marketing. Lot of better knives for half the price. I can get a 3v srk for the price of a esee 6.
