just wanted to thank you for the amazing design, I have had mine finished for 7 months now. I was really impressed with how it could be reconfigured, about making it larger.... it can be done. mine has a travel of 102" by 54", I was able to do this by having 2 powered y rails with steel reinforced belts. it was originally intended to be only a plasma table... however it have been being used as a router table for wood working, as well as a gigantic 3d printer. if your wondering how I did all of this I would be more than happy to share pictures.

I have considered making a bigger version by duplicating the drive end of the Y axis, not using a cantilevered design. This design would use a second drive motor and belt. Is this what you did? Would you be willing to send pictures? I need to do some research on how to configure the stepper motor driver to go the proper direction, the inverse of the other stepper motor. I have 2 lasers and a 3d printer. I’ve really become used to limit switches. I’m probably going to include them in my build.
@cameronck
@cameronck 6 ай бұрын
@@owenjohnson5030 that is what i did, the metal parts invert on the other side with no needed modification to the design, as for the stepper motors you can switch the rotation of the motor with dip switches if the driver you choose has the option, that's what i had done. i really wish @jdsgarage701 had a community blog for this sort of thing.

This will allow a LOT more people to have a plasma cutting table in their shop. People like me that can't really justify 5+k to get one with the amount of part cutting I do, but I do enough to justify this and what a fun project making it will be. Got the plans yesterday and my 3D printer will be busy for a few days now. Between the well organized plans and all of the videos, I believe even I can make this work LOL The only thing easier would be a package with all of the parts ready to assemble under or around 1k (not the cutter) if that is even realistic. Thanks JD's Garage

I really enjoy watching your videos and you've inspired me to build a CNC plasma cutter. With that said, your accuracy test was anything but an accuracy test. When I think of a CNC accuracy test, it's a test that measures how far the axis moves compared to how far you told it to move. Your test indicated the amount of backlash for the axis, or lack thereof, and it assured me that your machine isn't "losing steps", but that's about it. I'd enjoy seeing you repeat the test and show how far the axis moves if you tell it to move 0.25", 0.5" 0.75", etc. (the farther the better). Thanks for sharing your CNC plasma experiences!
@jdstremi
@jdstremi Жыл бұрын
Our test was an accuracy test. What you're talking about is calibration. Without accuracy (which is repeatability) calibration would be impossible. Think of this in terms of competitive shooting where it is judged by how close each bullet hole is to the others (repeatability) not how close they are to the bullseye.
@IndystormBarry
@IndystormBarry Жыл бұрын
@@jdstremi The definition of accuracy is "The ability of a measurement to match the actual value of the quantity being measured." I agree that the CNC would have to have good repeatability to manage that, but it's pretty difficult to screw up your definition of accuracy unless the steppers are losing steps or the backlash is extreme. What most would really care about is how close the part dimensions are to the drawing. They also might care about the question of "If I tell my CNC to move 10.3 inches, does it really move 10.3 inches?". Maybe you can make another video showing how well your CNC is calibrated, as you call it. That would be good to know too. 🙂
@ls2011schorsch
@ls2011schorsch Жыл бұрын
@@IndystormBarry i totally agree on that. And the measurement was also performed at the electric end stop. The maschine stops when the end stops being activated, but thats acually not the case while cutting the material. I would also like to see a test of cutting a part and measure it when it comes of the machine. Then you can compare it to the technical drawing/tool path which you created

You would love having home switches when you need to continue your cut after some failure not to scrap the plate or part, at least letting it run dry from the beginning of file and starting the plasma at right moment.

Guys, limit switches are to not crash the machine, not for work alignment. I agree they are not strictly necessary but they absolutely do no hurt in case you try to run a program that goes outside of the working area by mistake.

I have had mine up and running for about 3 months now and love it. Thanks for all the tips I am sure they will help when dialing in different size metals. I know post processing videos can be boring but I would love to see a part from start to finish. One of the areas I am struggling with recently is with Open Builds CAM software. It doesn't allow for an open vector and some times you just need a single line arc but can't do this in Open Builds CAM. Sounds like you may be using Fusion 360 for post process and Open Builds controller for sending the G-Code. Any ways thanks for sharing all of the videos constantly updating the build plans with any new info or items you find.

I bought your plans and was going to build it but in the end I think I am going to convert my CNC router to also have plasma capabilities. Mainly because I already have it. If it sells in the next few days. I will go this route as I would like the extra space. My router takes up a lot of space. I will defently be looking into adding your THC though.

I purchased the plans and the printed parts. I cant wait to start the build. You guys are gonna be famous one day, remember us when that happens....LOL ! I have had several home built CNC machines over the years with many type of drive trains, lead screws, chains and sprockets and rack and pinion, but never a belt drive. I liked the rack and pinion drive train the very best. With that being said, does the belt lose or gain length in temperature changes? Also do you guys have a forum in the works? Id really like to see that because information could be exchanged and shared more easily. As far as limit switches, I have a CNC 4x8 router table now and I use them as home switches along with a "fence in the corner of the X and Y that way My table is always squared and I never have to set my X and Y no mater what type of material shape I use. As long as i set it up in my CAD program, I can throw a circle in my fence and take off.

Great Vid! I’m new to watching you guys, but seeing how the vertical was jumping around, I think you need to add a little digital filtering to the incoming height data stream. Probably do a simple Alpha Filter first and see how that does, and if you need better up it to an Alpha Beta or Alpha Beta Gamma filter. Might have to add in a median filter if the data noise is really spiky. I wouldn’t think you have to go to a Kalman filter for this, but that is an option too. Looking forward to seeing more! Thanks!

Do you have that video and if so what is the link. Thank you.

There is an easier way to do it, two registration pins per edge for your workpiece corner referenced to home and learning how to use the wcs is fusion. Perfect consistency every time between sheets and far faster and more accurate than faffing about eye balling it.

Thanks for the video. But it appears you are confusing accuracy vs precision. Accuracy would be that if you move the arm 10.000 inches over, it would actually move 10.000 inches over. Precision is where you tell it to go to a spot and it would repeatedly go to that one spot (but it might not be accurate). For example, if you told it 5 different times to go to 10.000, 10.000 and it repeatedly goes to 10.250, 10.250, it would be precise but it wouldn't be all that accurate. Likewise if you told it to go to 10.000,10.000 and it went to 10.100, 10.100 the first time, then 9.900x9.900 the second time, 10.100,9.900 the third, 9.900,10.100 the fourth time, then it would be highly accurate but not very precise. You would also need to test it across the range (like 0.000, 0.000 move to 20.000, 20.000) and verify that it is going the distance you wanted for both x and y as it travels back and forth.

Hi guys. Regarding size, I can’t buy 2x2’ sheets here. The smallest are 1.000x2.000mm (39.4x78.8”) So 40” on the X-axis would be great. Along the Y-axis I could just slide the material. Could I possibly mirror the Y-axis and drive the X-axis on both sides?

I see this CONSTANTLY and it drives me nuts. DO NOT polt your air dryer to your compressor. it needs to be away from your unit. typically downline 10-25 feet with a gentle slope down to it. that air is HOT when it comes out of the compressor and it needs time ( and distance ) to cool back down and condensate ...THEN it can be dried out. Also, if you just violated that rule or dont run one at all your are trashing cutter tips way faster than you should due to water arcing
