Learning to spotweld with the Keenlabs kWeld Spotwelder
This spot welder is part of the Community Spotwelder project it can be lent out by joining the community forum at secondlifestorage.com/t-Commu... this one is available from Brisbane Australia but there are a bunch of other members out there getting behind the project to reduce the costs of building our walls and making them a little safer by not having to spotweld their 18650 DIY Powerwalls

Take a small grinder to your nickel strips. Sparks = plated steel. no spark = pure nickel. Both are magnetic. On the spot welding, I use 15 J for single strip. I kick it up to 25J for second strip. I use manual and make sure I have a good hard connection. If you keep the pedal down after the weld the display will cycle the stats and that will let you find tune your weld. Practice on some junk cells to tune in your settings. You can safely go to 100J Its an excellent welder and will do you well!

I could be wrong, since I don't have my kwelder yet, but I think you can increase the trigger delay for the automatic welds, so that after it detects continuity between the probes, it waits longer before executing the weld pulse, giving you more time to 'get set'.

This was fun. Seems to be a great difference between the strips. You would think they would be similar in performance. So I wonder, would strips from the same suppler bought at different times yield different results, must make your job more difficult.

Numb question: recently secured *nickel wire* - 24 gauge/0.5mm - as a sorta-fuse wire. (Ebike batteries, 10+ cells in parallel…) Wire seems a bit harder to counterfeit, too. Lots of nickel-plated strip sold as 200 99.6% nickel. I’ll need to tin the wire prior to spot-welding, of course - solder pot time, with acid flux; will need serious cleaning beforehand! - and then using a jig to keep the wires lined up…

Awesome! A little warning, I've cut my fingers pretty bad on the thin edge of the nickel strip trying to pull it off on really good welds. Make sure you use gloves or pliers to pull on the strip. Not bare handed! Using a lower voltage power supply decreases the sparks intensity when they occasionally happen.

That poor little innocent battery pack.... I wonder if someone could draw up a mark 2 print for the electrode enclosure. Have one solid electrode and one spring loaded with a switch at the end of travel, hooked up instead of a foot pedal. So it's works with a rocking action, like you were doing with the fuse, but you know you have a solid connection when it fires. You could R&D multiple spring weights for different current settings aswell.

@@HBPowerwall not on battery cells obviously, but would be nice if this could also be used to spot weld metal things. I work at Volvo and cars are mostly metals plates pressed to a form and then spot welded, with a bit of glue for water tightness. @@HBPowerwall I'm pretty sure you can't spot weld copper, and that's why they use it for spot welder tips. Spot welding relies of the resistance of the materials the current is going through, so the more the resistance the more heat and the more it welds. Maybe check the resistance of the strips over 1 meter with a DMM, but then again the thickness of the nickel might make a difference.

When spotwelding it is very important to place each electrode exactly and pressed firmly down which can best be achieved by holding them each in one hand. With a combination tool holding both electrodes you cant make sure both have good and firm contact. You will get some good weld and some bad ones too without knowing. An if the nickel band is magnetic its Ni-covered steel or something like that or just some chrome on steelband. Pure nickel band is quite pricy... And you should use around 50 J to spotweld 0,2+ mm nickel. 20 J is much to few.

@@HBPowerwall My dude you are teaching people but you have open contacts all over your bench and are tossing conductors around. There is literally a wall of volatile batteries in your face with open conductors. Why not toss an insulator on those contacts? Put a plastic bin in the corner to put those conductors in so they don't short something by accident. Many of those nickel strips are shipped sharp af and can slice your arms and hands open. You aren't wearing gloves at all, which is what I'd advise anyone handling them. You toss sketchy cells out in the yard - can't afford a bucket of sand? If you put some dogs in your bench you can have little hold downs to keep things where you left them while you work. There's just a general lack of care and people are going to copy what you do and be less savvy than you and end up getting hurt. If you are self taught I can appreciate that this is how you picked it up. I'm probably being a bit more snobby because I come from a structured technical background and there is a lot of focus on the culture of work for safety and consistent results.
