Today I'm testing out a couple of unusual USB rechargeable batteries I spotted on Amazon to see how they compare to a variety of regular batteries and other rechargeables. A battery organizer and a couple of battery testers are also featured. Tests are by no means scientific, but the results speak for themselves.
Round 1
• AA vs 3 random batteries (Duracell, generic, and an old rechargeable) using fans.
• AAA versus 3 new Duracell rechargeable batteries using Tac Lights.
Round 2 after two months of use (Fans & flashlights were swapped)
• AA vs brand new Duracell & Rayovac, and a Duracell rechargeable (about a year old).
• AAA vs the same 3 Duracells rechargeables, which were also used over two months.
SHOP
• AA Batteries: geni.us/qW1p8C
• The AAA I tested are no longer available (surprised?)
• Battery Organizer: geni.us/rgU9
• ZTS MBT-1 Pulse Load Tester: geni.us/ztstester
• A cheap tester like the one included in the organizer: geni.us/l2f8
• A short update after 1 year: • 10 Previously Reviewed...

You were using the 95$ tester incorrectly: the batteries use Li-Ion cells with a voltage converter which steps down the 3-4.2V voltage from the Li-ion cells to the 1.5V voltage alkaline batteries supply. The USB batteries imitate alkaline batteries and should be tested as such. 1.5V Lithium is a completely different chemistry and is not at all related to AA(A) batteries

Hi, just wanted to point out a problem with the test methodology: Normal battery starts at 1.65V, and goes down as much as 1.2V or 1.3V. the decrease in voltage is how all battery tester tells how much juice is left. Li-ION battery however, operates at 3.7V, and is converted down to 1.5V (or whichever the voltage manufacturer wants to ) and keeps at there. So for conventional battery testers the Li-ION batteries are just never gonna be full. (Or they will stay at full, depending on what the manufacturers think their batteries should operate at) until the juice run out, then suddenly die. And second thing, Alkaline Battery usually have a capacity of 2500~3000mah, and those states they only have 1200mah, their primary advantage is being light and easily rechargable. Of you want something that's truly alkaline replacement, I would recommend ENELOOP.
@Unsensitive
@Unsensitive 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah... I'd rather have a battery without wasted space, and potentially shoddy chargers that may lead to degassing of Li-ion, or in a super rare case of catastrophic failure, fire. The only advantage Li-ion may have, accounting for the lost space, is charge speed.. maybe? I'll stick to my NiMH, and small USB charger I keep in my bag.

Consistently of voltage is more useful on some device like water pump. I have a water pump to pump water from a gallon. It use D size battery. When normal battery is weak it is useless, the device run but water not came out. After switch to Li USB battery it always run at the max speed and easy to charge. The capacity is only 6000mAh but they are more convenient. No memory effect, don't need timer, less charge time(because charge at 5V).

@RonLaws
@RonLaws 4 жыл бұрын
i think the issue is not that they don't hold a charge, so much that they are essentially mini power banks. They will deliver their peak power until the cell voltage drops to the Li-ion minimum voltage threshold at which point battery protection circuit kicks in. coupled with the fact that they are likely very tiny lithium cell packs, you don't get as much effective capacity compared to a tpical throw away NiCad battery which is typically discharged to nearly zero, giving you more effective capacity.

for anyone wondering, the reason the USB rechargeables had a lot less charge was because it had less space to hold a charge, traditional batteries the whole battery can hold a charge, the USB AA's waste nearly 1/3rd its space for a USB port, the AAA didnt waste as much space with their female USB port hence why they werent as bad (the first time, second time they lost by a lot likely because they werent quality manufacturing) so yeah, it was obvious these wouldnt hold as much of a charge, the female USB port design however wouldnt be that bad if built with quality, hold slightly less of a charge but is more convenient to charge, its a good tradeoff for some

also worth mentioning that the protection circuitry in lithium batteries to prevent overcharge/discharge will kill the power when they reach a certain level while the alkaline batteries will run until totally dead which is why the fans slow down on teh alkalines and the lithiums just stop.

I do believe I'm the tester that was reading 10%, when you have a set to a lithium ion setting, it's anticipating roughly 3 or so volts. A typical double A battery puts out 1.5 volts, which on a 3 volt battery would be extremely low. Regardless of the testing methodology used, the real world test is how long do they last. Edit: and speaking of that, you definitely helped a lot of us save some money. I kind of figured they'd be kind of a gimmick because half the battery capacity will have to be taken up by a battery management circuit and internal wiring of some kind. When it comes to portable electronics I tried to see if I can get them in 18650 rechargeable lithium ion batteries, I have a cradle that they charge in and they last a long time especially in low-power applications like my headlamp that I use at work.

1.2V is the near empty voltage of NiMH cells, not the normal or average voltage. The real voltage of these cells range from 1.5V to 1.2V with 0.9V the absolute lowest. In fact, AA NiMH cells will have a higher voltage compared to alkaline (and god forbid "super heavy duty") cells under load if the current is more than 200 mA. Low self-discharge NiMH cells like Panasonic Eneloops can store 70% of their charge for 10 years and never leak. Other quality low self-discharge NiMH cells are not as good as the Eneloops, but can still hold a decent charge for years. Check out this site for discharge graphs and comparisons (and much more): lygte-info.dk/info/indexBatteriesAndChargers%20UK.html . Regardless many devices can tolerate the lower voltage of NiMH cells: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/as91psuVm8_el58.html

While these usb batteries are a lot more convenient as usb's are everywhere now... you have to keep in mind that about 1/3-1/4 of the insides has to hold a circuit board and the remaining portion is a battery cell. Here I've been waiting for years for someone to do lithium ion AAs. Now I know why the big guys didn't make these a long time ago. I wonder if it might work any better if the separated the charging like the nicad batteries.

LiOn batteries should be charged in chargers which regulate how they are charged- based on the battery design. Just generically charging a battery through a USB can cause an overcharge resulting in swelling and or an explosion...

Maybe when you measured/tested the batteries, it voltage is 1.5 volt li are 3.7/4.2 volts. That could be why your results are off... I think the usb batteries are 300-500 mA while the new Duracells are 3-7 times more power...

@tarstarkusz
@tarstarkusz 4 жыл бұрын
Putting aside the fact that they aren't lithium, as long as you have the proper charger, lithium batteries are relatively safe. Manufacturing defects can be a problem though. These batteries are a TERRIBLE idea. The extra circuitry to bump down the voltage takes away capacity and adds cost.
@emilycampbell6375
@emilycampbell6375 4 жыл бұрын
@@tarstarkusz don't listen to this comment, a good charger *will not* make a lithium-ion battery with a bad cell or bad embedded circuitry any safer, the problem isn't the usually the charger, it's the charging circuitry that's built into each battery, your wall charger communicates with that in order to monitor voltage, if that circuitry fails, your wall outlet has no way of knowing, a good charger won't save you from that, not to mention the fact that there's a good reason why we don't use lithium-ion technology in AA batteries, they die much quicker, cost more because of the embedded circuitry, are unreliable, they should be avoided at all costs, stick to NiMH if you want rechargeable AA or AAA batteries, they'll last much longer and won't fail randomly

I got some of those batteries and had the same results. In a LED light the usb-rechargeable ones would only last about 5.5 hours, while the eneloop rechargeable would last over 12 hours. AND the usb ones are 'rated' at higher milliamp hours... BUT the usb batteries are WAY better in my electric toothbrush, probably just because they put out 1.5 as opposed to the 1.2 volts of the other rechargeable...
@AleXianFPV
@AleXianFPV 4 жыл бұрын
the main difference is that the lithium ion ones hold that voltage level the entire time until the cell can't provide that anymore and then the internal circuitry switches the battery off. that kind of voltage characteristics are only good in certain use cases and devices.

These usb batteries are a great example of useless complexity for style over function. A large portion of the potential storage medium is taken up by the USB interface. And of course with no name brands you are OFTEN getting much less actual charge holding capacity as a cost cutting measure.
@brickman409
@brickman409 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't really say that it's choosing style over function, but rather it's choosing one route of convenience over another. I mean, I think the value of these isn't style (I honestly don't see these as stylish at all), but rather the convenience of not having to carry around a bulky battery charger with you if you are on the go; which would make charging easier and more accessible in certain situations. However, like you said, the space that takes up inside the battery gives it less battery life. So it just depends on your use case scenario if that trade off is worth it to you.

I bought a different kind of USB AA setup years ago. It was two regular rechargeable NiMh batteries, but the charger was like a large USB flash drive. It took forever to charge, and the batteries that came with it weren't very good, but I can still use the charger for other NiMh AA batteries if I'm in a pinch.

I've been using these SORBO (AA USB recharge) batteries for 2.5 years and never been happier. I have a total of 10 batteries and the first set I bought 2.5 years ago still works though the charge is not as good as original. I only bought the extra 8 batteries to replace my original set because they're finally wearing out after so long and so many uses... I think they are fine and I recommend them to anyone who wants an inexpensive solution. I use mine in the Oculus Rift CV1 controllers and they last around 30 hours of play time before needing charging again. Even if they last only half as long as a normal AA alkaline battery, the ongoing cost is far less considering the number of charging cycles you get.
