My math teacher last year had fidget toys for everyone in her classroom. she even had those little mesh marble fidgets and they helped SO much especially during tests. As someone with anxiety, OCD, and ADHD fidget toys help so much but I kind of wish schools allowed them and didn’t question us about them so much either.

Please let’s not forget the purpose of these “toys” they are meant for people that have anxiety, adhd, autism, and other mental illnesses. They are becoming so hyped and I have seen some people on the comments saying that there school banned them, from the looks of this will go exactly where the finger spinners went
@flowers4juli

Yeah, this whole fidget trend is just fidget toys, they don't use them as tools witch is what they are made for
@kcastings
@kcastings 3 жыл бұрын
Not true. Most are made simply as toys 🤦🏻‍♀️ the fidget spinner was claimed by autism parents moaning that neurotypical kids were playing with them. A simple google will tell you it was invented by a man who intended it as being a cheap TOY for poor children who don’t have toys. I appreciate these toys help people with disabilities, but don’t start trying to claim toys as only for neurodivergent people.
@fabplays6559
@fabplays6559 3 жыл бұрын
@@kcastings As an autistic person I'm a bit concerned that you don't seem to understand that fidget toys were indeed invented for the purpose of stimming and aimed towards neurodivergent people. We're not trying to say that these toys are ONLY for neurodivergent people, of course they aren't. Neurotypical people need to stim too, that's why ordinary people toy with their hair, bite their nails, other types of fidgeting. But the difference is that we genuinely need these things in order to keep us from getting distressed. Fidget toys help me avoid meltdowns, which are horrific and humiliating. In my school, fidget toys became a huge trend and every neurotypical person at school bought them and had them in class 24/7 to the point where it was decided that they were banned in my school. Suddenly, I didn't have the tools I needed to stay calm in noisy classrooms. If a teacher spotted so much as a fidget spinner, they would confiscate it. I had several meltdowns in school because I had no access to my fidget toys anymore, which I had been using since before they became trendy. It's perfectly fine to use these items, but don't forget that they are more than just toys to us neurodivergent people. Try not to use your fidget toys in places where it may become extremely disruptive and get the toys banned, because while it may just be an inconvenience to neurotypical people to get their fidget toys taken, it is a total nightmare for us.
@fabplays6559
@fabplays6559 3 жыл бұрын
@@kcastings Not to mention, something that really bothered me about the whole trend was that a lot of the people buying these fidget toys were the same people bullying me for being neurodivergent. That felt like an extra knife to the back to me. I have no issue with people in general enjoying fidget toys, it's great to see all the fidget positivity floating around now!! But at the same time, people appear not to understand autistic and ADHD stimming or even know that fidget toys have a purpose beyond two minute's entertainment. And before you ask: why didn't you just get special permission to use fidget toys from the teachers because you have autism? I did eventually get that permission, but it made me a target for people who didn't know I was neurodivergent. Why was I allowed to have a fidget cube when they weren't? I felt absolutely humiliated, and it was awful feeling so different despite the fact that what I had always done had become trendy out of nowhere.
@imnogood5016
@imnogood5016 3 жыл бұрын
The issue is not them being popular because they actually help everyone, even what we could consider "neurotypical" people. The issue is school system being super bigoted and closed off to any improvement that could be made for the quality of student's life

Fidget toys are used most commonly by Individuals who for example have anxiety, stress, ADHD/ADD, or autism. Although I will say those who do not have these kinds of conditions (aka allistics or "normal" non-disabled without similar condition people) who use these devices have actually hurt those who need them. So many fidget items have been banned from school settings because those who don't need these devices abused them
@ollywa
@ollywa 3 жыл бұрын
i actually think that neurotypical people popularizing fidget toys is a good thing because it makes it seen as a lot more normal. It also spreads the availability of them because they are in demand. from what i've seen, only the loud ones have been banned from school settings which neurodivergant people were already warned to not bring in to school because it's distracting to other students. so overall i do think it's a good thing that theyre popular now!
@EarthlingCanine
@EarthlingCanine 3 жыл бұрын
@@ollywa schools also banned music when it's been proven to help individuals focus and that applies to neurotipicals and neurodivergent Individuals alike. I've even had classes at my childhood highschool that banned students drawing or clicking pens or bouncing their leg because it was "distracting". Schools are actively ablelist and for more than what I've mentioned above.

I think it's also good to highlight how important it is to us neurodivergent folk. It's nice that it's getting popular so using fidget toys is more normalized but I hope it doesn't end up going down the same route as fidget spinners where they got banned from some schools. (Edit: rewording it)

Hey Sandy! I have a recipe for you! -Crayola Model Magic Clay -Lotion (I used 20 pumps) Then mix that together and it gets softer, eventually it feels like slime. This worked for me. NOTE: After a week or two, it will start to feel like clay again, you might have to use more lotion

I have many fidget toys because I used to have a lot of anxiety. They helped me to calm down and pay attention to them instead of my anxiousness. I no longer struggle from anxiety and fidget toys played a big role in helping me overcome it.

The reason why fidget toys weren’t that popular when fidget spinners were popular, is because that everyone now is very stressed lately, and their mental health is very bad. So these types of toys help them, or relaxes them. Back then, there was no covid, and our relaxation back then was, for example, going to the park, playing with friends, hanging out in a cafe etc etc. So they didn’t have THAT much stress, so they thought that fidget toys back then were kind of useless. Now the whole generation is using it because of all their stress!
