About the flickering, the LEDs are dimmed using pulse width modulation. For example if you want a light on 50% brightness you turn it on and off in small pulses. 1ms on 1ms off and then you repeat this. This on off block could is called a wavelength. You devide 1s by the total time of the wavelength to get the frequency in which it modulates. In this case 50Hz. Good lights do the modulating at more than 15000Hz. (From what I have read once on the internet.)

Oh, no… hahah My Elgato Wave 3 arrived today, I almost got a Fifine. But where I live, the price would be as high as Elgato… so not that cheap :/. And the Wave 3 was made in partnership with Lewitt, but I was sold because of the software: Wave Link. It works like a mixer/interface and controls the mic/audio (the input and output), I think that's why you didn't hear you in the headphone on the mic.

If the problem goes away at 1/50 while dimming, the HUE's could be holding 1000 Hz. The simplest way to run a PWM is hold the clock the same and vary the on vs off percentage. Hopefully new bulb revisions hold the same frequency. If you get a mix of bulb frequencies, it will could be a real bugger to sort out flicker.

You should also check out the Samson Q2U. It is a USB microphone that will also accept XLR to go into your camera or mixer. It is a great 2 for 1 mic an it is only $70. Anyway, just thought I'd pass this along.

I think about "speaking directly to camera" type videos as being very conversational where eye contact with the person you're speaking to is very important. When you cut to another angle that breaks eye contact you risk losing that connection with the viewer. Using more of a profile angle works much better when the subject is speaking to someone off camera.

Nick is using the same mic that I normally use-the Blue Baby Bottle. It's a $400 XLR studio mic, that we each purchased for half price, during a Cyber Monday 2016 sale.

90 deg side shots originated on tv news segments and were switched to as they would go to break. They were also used at the beginning of a new segment but only for a couple of seconds. Yes wide angle but not from a low position. A 3/4 shot from the back showing who the person is speaking to either the interviewer or audience. And never a closeup showing only the interviewee's face from the side.

Re the bulbs it might be at a constant frequency but its the pulse width varies ie for dim more off than on, bright more on than off. Are the bulbs made in the EU ?

Philips is headquartered in the Netherlands, where they do indeed use 50hz. Though Philips is a global company, and I imagine the U.S. is a pretty large market for their smart bulbs. I bet they just figure 1000hz is fast enough that normal consumers won't even notice an issue on video.

How does one mount these to say a Rode PSA-1?

The Rode PSA-1 boom arm uses a 3/8" thread and also comes with a 5/8" thread adapter (both standard sizes for mics). The Movo and Blue mics have a 5/8" hole on the base of the mic capsule, so you could detach the mic stands to mount directly to a boom arm. The FIFINE has a tripod sized hole and comes with a tripod-to-3/8" adapter. The Elgato only has a tripod hole, so you'd need your own tripod-to-3/8" adapter.

I like the style of the Elgato as it resembles the old ribbon mics used by radio announcers for years due to it making their voices sound better. Altho Griffin doesn't really need it as his voice is deep naturally. Griffin, when you ceased being the face of indy mogul i stopped watching and am very happy to have found your channel.

@@GriffinHammond Indy Mogul has changed over the years and in it's current iteration is about as far as it can get from what it was. Don't really understand why but it feels hard to relate to anymore. I suppose it's aged along with the those that were there in the earlier days and it is more directed at them. It also seems to be a big loss to the newbies just starting out. Because today most of the content seems to be less about starting out and more towards those who are way more advanced. I know change is constant and growth is good but sometimes people need things they can count on.
