Or you could make your own icing, it's very simple. Just one egg white, 1,6 cups (or about 400 grams) of icing sugar and a small splash of vinegar essence. The vinegar is not necessary just adds a nice glow. Sure you could use any type of white vinegar.

My mum always used melted sugar to glue the parts of the gingerbread house together, and I was really surprised when I found out that this is a bit unusual in some other countries. In Norway we call the melted sugar "knekk", which is basically an old fashioned name for caramel. I haven't made gingerbread houses in years, but I believe my sister still uses "knekk" when she makes them with her children. Since the caramel is so hot, I remember never being allowed to help put the house together, and I would join in for the decorating part. This brought back good memories!

We’ve used the melted sugar method since I was a kid more than 30 years ago and pretty sure my grandmother used it too, so pretty funny to see it going around as a new TikTok hack 😄 A tip from me is: save some of the icing and put it on the joints to make them look like snowy corners on the house instead of brown ones 😊 Also, you can dust icing sugar on top for a less chunky look on the snow 😊

I love using sugar syrup! A quick tip is to cook it very little for something like a bread glaze, something fragile enough to shatter. Cook it longer until a clear light caramel so you can stick things together. But use it immediately after use if you cook it longer, and chill the gingerbread house when you are done because even the slightest bit humidity from the air can melt the top layer causing it to stick to things you don’t want it to; like decorations and sprinkles.

Crushed hard candy works fantastically as candy pane / stained glass windows. I have never heard of gummy bears before for it and was a little surprised by that. The burnt sugar works for sure, but feels dangerous with the burn potential. Chocolate sets up really quickly too and you can put it in a piping bag (no tip).
