Testing with ATEM | Blackmagic Design UPDOWNCROSS HD

In this video, I unbox and test use a Blackmagic UpDownCrossHD Converter to connect a 1080 25p camera to an ATEM running at 1080 50i UK Format. The output can be set to any format.
Works perfectly straight out of the box.
The Dip Switches are a little confusing, but this is a cheap unit.
I use Ipad Strata Pro App.
My main camera is a BMPCC original camera.
My Camera looking down is a Sony V1U

One thing to be aware of with the UpDownCross HD is that when you use it for 50i to 50p or 50p to 50i conversion it goes via 25p - so you lose the smooth 50Hz motion of native interlaced or 50fps progressive, and get juddery, film-look, 25Hz motion.

Hi, it's a remote control app controlling the ATEM mixer. The name of the app is Strata Pro.

@@JohnnyMotel99 As I haven't used streamdeck, its not something I can easily compare to, however the ATEM Production mixer is a 1 u hardware rack with 10 HD-SDI inputs with multiviewer and program outputs, the Strata Pro app is very useful for remote controlling the Atem (all settings), I don't think you can use a streamdeck to remote control an Atem.

@@Ukat09 I do´nt think it can actually but in my case it did´nt matter since I found out I can use 108024p with my capturecard and flash media live encoder, I do not use the usb port for streaming only the hdmi

Hi yes you can choose between 1080i59.94, 1080i60 for output, it will support either output framerates. 1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p29.97, 1080p30, 1080p50, 1080p59.94, 1080p60 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 1080i60

Well technically the frame rate is the same as 25p and 50i are both 25fps the 50i just has an interlaced, so 2 layer sensor

OMG, you just hot swapped the SDI, I can't believe it didn't blow. I wouldn't do that again honestly. But from the looks of it you got all the gear to fix it if it does.

Never had an SDI blow in all the years working in Broadcast, only when another engineer got RF and SDI mixed up and stuck volts down the wires, it is pretty robust, although depends on manufacturer too. Check out some of my on tour videos with kit in use...

Hello Andy! Maybe you know : I use hdmi to vga converter then bnc cable like rgbhv to send picture to JVC TM-H150C PVM from PC. So What the exact settings (resolution kilohers I need to setup in custom nvidia resolution setting panel there are lot of volts kilohers delays and resolution parameter for analog signal)

Hello, great video. Do all outputs run simultaneously? I'm looking to run HDMI in, then SDI + HDMI out at the same time (effectively HDMI to SDI with HDMI thru) - is this possible using the updowncross?

Yes all outputs are always active, both sides and the hdmi.

Questions is though, when feeded with SDI AND HDMI, does it bi-direct them, as in the SDI IN>HDMI OUT and the HDMI IN>SDI OUT. Like the bidirectional.

Hi Andy I have BMPCC 6K Total Video Outputs 1 x HDMI up to 1080p60 i need out to HDMI or SDI atem 1080 50i.... is this possible?

Yes, if you set the converter to 50i output then it will convert the picture, although if you convert from p60 to 50i then you may have a regular frame judder as the non similar framerates discard the unneeded frames. I may do a 60 to 50 test video to answer this question

I'm glad I found your channel. I have recently bought a new PC monitor (for editing with a Mac). I was wondering if my Sony FS7 would be able to show a picture on the screen, but the monitor doesn't recognise the signal. I tried several HDMI cables including ATOMOS' 4K compatible one (the monitor is HD). The FS7 had the following settings: Display Out: HDMI 1080p Framerate: 23.98fps I haven't tried changing the framerates on the camera, but did try looping through my Blackmagic Design Video Assist 5". Whilst most of my work usually involves hiring a professional 19"monitor for client/director, there is the odd occasion where I'd appreciate having one for my own projects. Would the device in the video or just the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini be helpful in allowing the signal to be viewed on a PC monitor?

It could be that the monitor doesn't like the 23.98 frame rate. If you used a Blackmagic updowncross converter you could resemble the frame rate from 23.98 to 60p for viewing which the monitor would probably like. The updowncross costs £113 in the UK. HDMI to sdi, sdi to HDMI, sdi to sdi , HDMI to HDMI all in one box.

Will this deinterlace signals? I have 4 cameras that only output through sdi interlaced and I need to output in progressive before my signal hits a Hyperdeck. I havent found a solution yet...

Sorry for the late reply, yes it does, although there isn't much control to how it processes the fields, but it does a reasonable job

Hi, unfortunately not, I have tried powering via the USBC port but the unit doesn't activate, I think the usb is for data software updates only. Hope that helps.

Hi Mr. Andy.. if my video output from mini atem is 1080 50p, can it be converted to 720 50p so that I can record using an intensity shuttle at 720 50p? and whether the output sdi and hdmi can output video simultaneously. if we use all outputs. Thank you..

Hi, yes it is very easy to convert to 720 50p from the device. Both the SDI and HDMI outputs from the converter will run at 720p 50. Both outputs will be simultaneous. If you are using SDI IN from the atem at 1080p50 then you will have .. SDI LOOP output at 1080p50, SDI 1 OUT at 720p50, SDI 2 OUT at 720p50 and HDMI OUT at 720p50. Hope it helps.

HI there ... I am wanting to use an old ENG 2/3 inch camera for multi camera shooting ... we are using a Blackmagic ATEM Studio HD to connect the cameras together. The ENG camera shoots 625i SD and the rest of our cameras are 1080i or 1080p HD. Can I use the UPDOWNCROSS converter to convert the SD signal (composite video out feed) to 1080i or 1080p signal so I can use it with my other cameras. Thank you inadvance.

Tarx Morrison I will test it and let you know the outcome, should work fine although I want to see what happens with the ratio, are you shooting 16:9 pal or 4:3 ? Although you will need a composite to Sdi /hdmi before this unit this is sdi hdmi only
