Two words GENERAL FINISHES 😉 I don’t think you are getting the results you desire. I suggest try water based by this brand it will knock your socks off. Pine is notorious for being a hard to stain wood. You need something very rich in pigment to knock down all that yellow. The stuff you get from the big box store doesn’t cut it. Also gel stain is more for layering the non wood surfaces or existing finishes. Pine is too soft for gel stain to get a good stick. I’ve watched videos of people that have been experimenting with stains and woods for 30 plus years. There is so much to the chemistry of it all. I don’t think many people realize the complexity to different wood species and different stain options. Keep trying don’t settle for anything in a yellow can minwax or varathane. I’m saying it the nicest way possible my makeup has more pigment than those brands.

I think I used GF gel stain near the end of this video. 🤔 But, I didn’t wait long enough after applying the base. So the GF didn’t look as good as it normally does. For this video I was trying to get a medium brown look with just the options I had on hand. My GF is too dark for what I wanted anyway. But, I should do another video using just gel stains on Pine. It is easier to avoid the blotches with gel. Thanks for sharing. 👍

Hello!! Would love to see you do a tutorial or list some products… all I have access to is a Lowe’s and the stuff I’m making for my home looks great until I try and stain it, I’m so frustrated! You seem really knowledgeable

If the glaze was oil based and the stain underneath was water based or vice versa, you probably didn’t let the underneath dry long enough before putting glaze over it.

Good thinking. That makes sense. I actually checked General Finishes website after making this video. They recommend using the glaze over a clear coat when you want to use it over stain. 😊

Simple, if I have a stain with a color I do not care for, I change the color.

Provincial is the shade, Old Masters is the brand.

A fundamental mistake is sanding it too smooth. There is no reason to go above 120. You don't want the pores of the wood closed tight, it inhibits stain penetration and finish adhesion. The stain surface can be knocked down before finish with any green pad if needed.

Hmm, this is the opposite of what most people recommend. Especially with soft woods like Pine, stopping at just 120 will leave dark spots, swirls, and lines in the finish.

The can actually says Wood Conditioner. It would be really confusing for people if she called it something else.
