In this short video I'll show you an easy way to test your pool to see if it has phosphates in it (without having to get a confusing and costly test kit or take a sample to a pool store).

I’ve been servicing my own pool for approximately 18 years and had no clue about phosphates and how it relates to algae. This information is so helpful and much appreciated.

I use a special test strip in a tube and you have to look down in the tube with a white paper underneath. If you have phosphates it will colour blue and you can measure it. I have a limit of 500 ppb (yes, billion). If it is higher I use a product similar to Orenda. The first time I used it my pool had 1000 ppb and the product turned my crystal clear water milky white. It scared the shit out of me! But after using a clarifier it went crystal clear again...thank God. Then, I got from 1000 ppb to only 100 ppb. I now have 200 ppb and discoverd my tap water has 80 to 100 ppb. Water evaporates....voila phosphates will increase in due time. If you cut a lot of grass near the pool this will also increase phosphates. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for commenting. But hopefully knowing that the fact that the phosphate remover clouds up when you added it to the pool as an indication that it’s actually working against the phosphates set your mind at ease next time you do it so when it clouds up, it doesn’t cause you to panic. 👍

thanks for the video Kenny. Pool professional here and for the past 2 years, ive used Orenda pr10000 and have never used algaecides again after your recommendation. Yellow algae is especially tough and orenda takes care of that. one thing i noticed is that instead of using a full 8-16 oz, treating it with 2 oz per week worked best for me because the filter pressure doesnt increase. For cartridge filters, i saw that this product had barely any effect on filter pressure.

Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting. And thank you so much for your suggestion based on your experience of only using 2 ounces per week to prevent pressure build in the cartridge filter. That’s a great idea. I have not tried that before but definitely something I will try. I agree with you also, the yellow/mustard algae is the toughest one in my opinion to deal with, but you are right the PR 10,000 does take care of that Thanks again for commenting and for watching.

Great information, Sir. I just put 48 oz of NoPhos into my 35k gallon pool. It will need another 48 oz treatment to get rid of all the phosphates. At least now I know how to test for it without making a 40-minute drive to Leslie's. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you, your channel is by far the best! Question, do I backwash DE filter after treatment
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler Ай бұрын
I would wait 24 -48 hours then backwash and recharge the DE filter. That allows the phosphate remover to kill all of the phosphates and the filter to trap them.

Great demo, Kenny. As an aquarist I'm aware of concern about phosphates. For those of us with DE filters, is this something that will clog the filter? If so, I'd wait until it was nearly time to recharge the DE anyway. Someone before me decided a couple silver maples around the pool would be nice, and they're beautiful shade tress. But boy howdy do they shed all manner of twigs, seed "helicopters" and then finally leaves that go into the pool. Phosphates are real.
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler Ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment. And in answer to your question, definitely when the phosphates are neutralized or killed the inert matter is still in the pool and is typically sucked in via the vacuum or cleaning system to the filter where it’s trapped, which can definitely add to saturating the grid. So, your thought of waiting till it’s almost time to backwash and recharge your filter to add the remover is a good idea. Typically with my client’s pools with the filters, I will add the monthly maintenance dose of phosphate remover to their pool one week and then the following week I will backwash and recharge the filter.

Thanks for the vid. It really helps. Looks like your in val vista lakes. im in san tan. Leslies said i have 3164 phosphates in the pool shouldn't be higher than 100. lol Have you noticed an extreme amount of calcium in the pool and pipe outside the house? How do i get rid of it? Its on the pebble tech and the rock water fall.
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler 22 күн бұрын
3164 is really high. NOTE: I'm not a fan of Leslies, they tend to up sell you a ton of chems you don't need. Calcium? Our AZ water is extremely "hard" due to the amount of calcium in it. There's no way to lower it cause it's in our water. Bead blasting helps but its a mess and should be done by a pro. You can also try "scale tech" (link: amzn.to/3zGPEQk). Although I'm not a fan of using a bunch of chemicals in a pool, I do know this can work but follow the instructions.

So do you recommend doing a backwash and rinse on a sand filter a few hours after doing this or perhaps the following day?

so assuming all that cloudiness ends up in the filter, do I need to backwash the filter afterwards ( using DE-type filter). I have heard others say I should turn filter off, wait until precipitate gos to floor and then be vacuuming to waste, but since I don't have a pool vacuum per se ( just a robotic cleaner), I think this system seems easier.
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler 23 күн бұрын
Either way will work fine. You may want to invest in a suction side pool vac.. My favorite is the Barracuda G3.

If a pool has a cleaner, do I need to shut off the side port so the cleaner won’t run?
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler Ай бұрын
No, you don’t. It’s actually good to have the filter pump running, and the cleaner running as a faucet remover is working because once the phosphates are neutralized to an inert matter the vacuum can suck them into the filter.

Phosphates are food for algae. If phosphates get to high you will start gowning an algae farm. I use Perfect Weekly from Leslie Pools. Seems to work pretty well for me.

Sounds like Mustard (or Yellow) algae. Phosphates are food for Black, Green and Yellow (Mustard) algae. As far as is the algae harmful to swimmers. I'm not a doctor so I can't really comment on that.

Once i kill algae do i need to vacuum to waste or will it disappear by itself
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler 23 күн бұрын
@@JamieBell-t4d the manufacturer recommends vacuuming the waist product of the phosphates once they are killed and algae as well. People who have some form of automatic cleaning system in the pool, whether it be a stay in the pool vacuum or in floor pop-up cleaning system usually allow that cleaning system to “clean up“ the neutralized, algae and phosphates. However, it is a good idea to clean the filter Media on some type of regular schedule. For cartridge filters, I suggest once every six months maximum time between, sand filters every week to two weeks and DE filters every four weeks. With sand and DE filters once you kill the algae and phosphates it’s pretty easy to just backwash the filter to clear them out.
