Theoreticaly, it is actually possible to have this happen in vanilla NES Tetris. The pieces are chosen purely by random, not like how they are chosen in modern versions of Tetris.

apparently their implementation of rng had some weird quirks making getting all the i pieces like this impossible without other glitching

its not completely random, every time it needs a new peice it rolls 1-7, the seed being the frame counter, if it gets 7 or the peice you got last, it rolls again, this time 1-6 and it will stick with its choice no matter what

it's quite hard to play classic tetris when the "next" box is empty. a lot of the planning of placing a piece involves knowing what piece is coming next. playing this version seems to take a lot of skill

It's not possible, even with RNG manipulation, to get a sequence of more than 4 i pieces in a row. quirk of the game code.

@@afj810 Not quite. However my knowledge on the topic is reaching a close, since it's so immensely complicated. I do know that statistically i piece is least likely to appear

I'm not sure if this is a present in the NES version, but most Tetris games generate a "bag" of the 7 pieces in a random order, so they are all equally likely but can only occur twice in a row

Actually, it's impossible without cheats. There's a hard limit of 4 i pieces in a row due to how the next piece is chosen. Not even RNG manipulation can get around it.

@@Sickcrazyneet It's level 29, at that point the speed jumps to the pieces falling in like 0.3 seconds. People can and have played pretty far into it during competitions. It's looks insanely hard.

I messed around with this in Tetris DS with a cheat code. I would always stack them end-to-end as high as I could go without ending the game, and see how well I could do. I would always fill out the bottom first, so that way I would be less likely to hit a condition where because the game is sped up I wouldn't be able to move my piece out of the way in time as it spawned at the top

Technically this could be done on a normal copy of NES tetris if you just did the best RNG manipulation, without needs for cheats. It would just take about like 20x as long to do, but

Actually, while RNG manipulation is possible, there's a hard limit to many sequences. You can have at most 4 i pieces in a row without cheats.

No, even with manip, there is a hard limit to the sequence of pieces you get. NES Tetris RNG, while more random than seven bag, has plenty restrictions
