Really need to start uploading some of the classic video game documentaries that have been on TV over the years.
But this is Tetris: From Russia with Love, a BBC documentary from 2004 about the West's rush to obtain the rights to the most popular puzzle game of all time. And the Soviet's rather sneaky way of playing Nintendo, Mirrorsoft and Atari/Tengen off against each other.
A really good view!

It's really funny, Soviet in this story is not sneaky at all, they're simply trying to sell the game, while maximizing profit, like a proper businessman, the Hungary guy tried to play everyone, like an average sneaky businessman, and Britain used government connection to try to force a deal, like Britain. The world needs honest businessmen like Henk Rogers. And BTW Robert Maxwell was Ghislaine Maxwell's father.

And the doc is kind of lying about no copyright law, the state has the of distribution, but in the law 98/100 it is s "SECTION 98. Author's rights The author receives the right: to publication, reproduction and distribution of his works by any lawful means under his own name, under a pseudonym, or anonymously; to the integrity of his work; to receive compensation for the use of his work by other persons except in the cases provided by law. The rates of copyright royalty are laid down by the legislation of the USSR and the Union Republics." So the state have the monopoly os distribution but the creator herself own the copyright

Amazing documentary. Strong determination and grit from the developer, the sales men and the authorities. Great battles for a "little" game called Tetris

Poor Pajitnov got royally screwed over by his government in Russia. I'm sure he's a wealth man today but the absolute peak of its popularity was surely in the late 80s when it hit the Gameboy. No doubt the Russian government made millions and the poor creator didnt see any of that until he left the country. One of the original (and by far the greatest) puzzle games, and definitely the first I ever had any interest in playing. Nowadays there are untold crappy Tetris knockoffs!!!

I really enjoyed the AppleTV+ movie, and love to see it was fairly accurate where it mattered! I know Henk and Alexey were part of making the film but I still think it's an odd choice to have whitewashed Henk.

I agree it was odd they hired a white Brit to play a Dutch-born Austronesian descent American hehe...also Patjinov's actor has reddish hair over brunette although at least the actor was Russian (although I'm not sure what ethnicity Patjinov is).

If you don't mind awful costumes and hair and make up, along with enormous amounts of (made up) exposition. However, the acting was top notch. Funny thing is for Tetris, the actors, who were all very good looking weren't as attractive as the real life people. That's rare.
