I remember eating there from 2016-2018 and I was so impressed with the food and I've returned many times since leaving Austin. I'm just up the road in Waco now. Now I'm going to plan another trip just to go eat here again! Wasn't aware of the rich history and it's so cool 😎

So glad this place is still around, all over east Austin gentrification has closed so many small businesses and pushed out families that grew up there since the early 1900’s. Makes me happy that Joe’s is still going strong love yall

Great story but the only part that got me is when they said immigrants. These people aren’t immigrants when they carry indigenous North American ancestry, when Tejas was once part of Mexico and many of the foods they cook are native to North America. How can you be an immigrant when you’re on your ancestral homelands.

I’m totally against illegal immigration. This family came to the US when there was no border, there was no immigration laws, and there was not welfare. To me these people are Americans of Mexican heritage. Coming into a country legally gives you rights, coming illegally is a crime and should not be allowed. Great story. Great family. The American dream personified.

reminds me of my town's own restaurant/bakery. opened in the 70s and became a staple for the mexican american community. last month, a fire broke out and burned a huge portion of the dining areas and bakery and they put out an update for supporters saying they don't know what the future holds. broke my heart and hope they'll be able to rebuild and reopen.

For those who don't know, in those days when the great grandma came to the US, there was no border. People came and went as they pleased because Texas (the SouthWest) had been part of Mexico until The gold's found in California and the US invaded Mexico. When the border was built, it was opened and unpatrolled until the 20th century.

Where did you get your history info? The US did not invade Mexico. It was colonists who fought Mexico in the Texas Revolution. The Republic of Texas was not even a state at that time. And The Republic of California has it's own history but also was not part of the US when it won it's independence from Mexico.

This reminds me of a bakery in my neighborhood across the street from a 24 hour laundromat. Sometimes I do my laundry at 3am just to have an excuse to get bread and coffee at 4:30 am when they open. It's a good feeling to be up and working and ready to go when the rest of the city is still asleep! 🗽🌇🗽
