That Cleverlys book is very good. There is also three book series by two finnish authors who actually were in the search party which found Törnis remains. In them is so much more detailed information then any other books of him. Sadly only in finnish.

About the cruises: I don't know about the specific tours he's talking about, but around the Baltics there is a steady, in normal times daily (or several times a day) functioning cruise ship traffic. Mostly Stockholm - Helsinki/Turku and Helsinki - Tallinn.

The bread that is common in Sweden to eat surströmming with is a bread called Tunnbröd. I’m not sure if it’s something that you can get a hold of but try and find something similar to it if you can is just my recommendation.

One of the best is book series by Finnish war book author Esa Siren. He writes books based on war diaries letters reports etc. and fills in the blanks as well as he cans with his imagination+historian+ military experts (these are usually situations that don't affect the historical aspect that badly, like how certain position was attcked, if the report leaves gaps for example). The Törni series has 4 books: Törni kärkeen (Törni to the "tip of the spear"/top the front of the unit) about his time when returning to Finland for continuation war. He commanded a tank platoon. Törni iskee (Törni strikes) about the Finnish offensive to Soviet Karelia and his tank platoon journey to the end of the offensive. Törnin sissit (Törni's sissi's/recon troops) about his long range recon missions, Soviet partisan hunting and destroying of Soviet bases behind the lines. Törnin hurjat jääkärit (Törnis fearsome/ferocious jägers) About the Unit Törni in the brutal battles of Soviet mass offensive to knock Finland out. Couple of fun facts, late Finnish president Mauno Koivisto served as light machine gunner in Unit Törni. There is really old hotel at the city center of Tampere (built 1929). Bunch of great people of history has stayed there for example Marshal Mannerheim. I was there for brunch couple of weeks ago and there was a brass plack that read something like this: "Men of unit Törni reunited here 1951*, they got banned for life" (*year might be wrong). Another fact is more general but it has been said Törni agreed. The Finnish officers didn't value the training they got in the SS, kind of "student exchange" with Germany. Törni I think remarked it was useless and I have seen many officers claim the same. Well that can be "expected" as Finnish infantry that fought along the Germans during the continuation war in the northern Finland cloudn't understand how horrible Germans were at fighting in forests. One story goes something like this: Germans were going on a recon mission, Soviet road use recon (how many vehicles etc). They asked for a Finnish guide, the guide was PFC who knew some German. After few hundred meters he had to stop the platoon and try to give them a field lesson in moving in formation in forest AND TO MAKE THEIR GEAR STOP BANGING AND CLANGING. They had everything possible with them for few hour recon. Finns wondered why on earth did germans have a full platoon for such recon mission, since Finns generally used like 3-9 man teams for such things. Well after they got the road the Germans did something the guide Finn had never seen before. The platoon got in "line", they took turns to watch for the road, after like some column had passed the first guy ran to the officer and told the count and repeat. There were some more odd shenanigans(like the officer had a whistle or something that he used without any "reason" and produced more noice) that I can't recall from this, but the Finnish guide was like WTF is going, this is not how recon works, the whole time.

"Alikersantti" he pronounced so dramatically is literally subsergeant or undersergeant ("Kersantti" is how word that became "sergeant" in English morphed into in mouths of old timey Finns for some reason.), But usually alikersantti is translated as corporal because they share similar roles. Which is funny because we also have rank that is cognate with corporal (korpraali), but unlike in English speaking countries, here corporal in senior private instead of junior NCO for some reason.

The way I see it, the biggest outside factors for Winter War was the US shipper Brewster airplanes, which the US pilots weren't too fond of. Easily one of the most underappreciated planes of the entirety of WW2. Sure, it would never hold a candle to a Bf109, or a Spitfire, but in this early stage of the crisis, it was a VERY competent plane when flown with the advantages of the plane in mind. In my opinion, it has its place right up there next to the Mustang among the US planes maybe not in absolute terms, but still.

Im sure the most well known cruise ship for music internationally, at least for metal music, is the 70 000 tons of metal. Which is literally a metal festival on a cruise. I dont think theyve been active past few years because covid but hopefully they will return.

Yes in finland those boats are ships that are cruise ships but people go there to drink and party and there is good bands usually and many bars and discos and going is cheap like 20-40euros 🤣

Yeeah , the crusies boats goes between Stockholm - Helsingfors and you can see specific bands play on the boats. 24 hours Cruise and bands play booth way , between the afternoon to long in too the night , Then on the way back from middle of the day too you are back at land in Stockholm again.
