I always knew that Colby lost this season at the FTC due to not apologising or feeling remorse for Jerri, since she was the swing vote. But now I realised how BADLY he treated the entire tribal council, not even saying any closing speech. Wow it is underratedly awful.

I think maybe he tanked the last two days as a marketing thing (but maybe not), but by the time the finale aired he knew he had some sort of q rating he could monetize. He endorsed some products etc. and might have been more marketable with 100K and a nice guy persona given that people who lost earlier than him in season 1 were doing commercials or had movie roles coming their way. I still think he would have been more or less equally marketable with a win and 900K more money from the game. I don't think he cashed in quite as much as he thought he might on the night the verdict was read.

I remember he was on a show called Top Shot as the host. I always suspected he wanted Tina to win because he feared she wouldn’t have as many opportunities after the show. She didn’t seem devious and evil like Richard Hatch, but I thought her personality was bland and she came across as this middle aged soccer Mom.

Your point about his bungling questions at the FTC is a valid one, but the narrative that the show even tries to push by saying his decision was cursed in Ghost Island and things like "he made one of the dumbest moves ever" is just flat out false. Time has been kind to Richard Hatch's win, but in the moment the end of Borneo was universally hated. The only one of the Tagi 4 considered likable was Rudy, and even Burnett and Probst were worried about what this would do for the show, especially given how psychiatrists and even preachers broke down how ugly it got out there. So all people applying for The Australian Outback knew they were walking into this buzzsaw in the public eye, and it is why so many conversations were about who deserves to move forward, morality and so on. And virtually all of the contestants agreed off camera that no matter what it had to be a "good person" winning. Colby did make a pact with Tina early on that they would go to the end if possible and he did want to honor that, but he also knew that if he went with Keith, he was probably winning in a landslide. Good for his bank account, but if he came across as two faced and went back on his word, it would end there, and for the show they wouldn't have their first true protagonist until Ethan, and for many it may have been too late by then. He took Tina to the end because he did think he had a chance at winning, but he was also comfortable losing to her if it came to that. And he was also playing the long game, because he knew that if he was the man of character who stuck to his word, he would make up the money he lost via all his career opportunities that would come about from being the good Southern gentleman who is also very good looking, and that happened. From the razor blade endorsements to being in movies to hosting two or three TV series, he is worth more then Richard and Tina combined. So he may not be the sole survivor of The Australian Outback, but he knew his decision would set up his opportunities for the rest of his life, and it has ten times over. Over 2,000 babies born in the year 2001 were named Colby solely because of his popularity as well.

I've never understood why Jerri was considered a villain and Colby a hero. Jerri was outspoken, always speaking her mind, sexualy open and a strong woman, never talking bad about Colby and never betraied their alliance. Colby on the other hand always talked trash about Jerri behind her back and backstabed her in end
@rcmunro22
@rcmunro22 3 жыл бұрын
Jerri was a point of conflict in the camp often. She would argue with Keith regularly & it wasn't a genuine Romance she had for Colby. It's suggested pretty strongly she was getting close to Colby for strategic reasons because he was well liked by everyone & would go far. Colby picks up on this & backs away from her. She was a trouble maker by the standards of early Survivor Seasons even if it seems mild to modern Seasons of Survivor. Colby was a Hero until the end, he botched the end so badly that he looked like a Villain when compared to Tina which is why he lost. People give Colby a pass on the end of the Season because it was early days of Survivor, aside from the last few days Colby was pretty stand up throughout the Competition. He botched it hard at the end though, which is why he lost.

I think ultimately something about her attitude was portrayed very poorly and the rest kind of followed. But also, 2001 was a very different time period where all the qualities Jerri had are now praied in modern Survivor (and she even receieved alot of praise 9 years later for HvV)

I think a factor that should be noted here is the double standard for women especially at that time. Sexual forward was and forward was in women was and still Is perceived as slutty and bitchy. While those same qualities in a man are Seen as being a chad or an alpha. Of a captain of the football team bullies a nerd and grabs a cheerleaders ass he’s an alpha chad. If a cheerleader bullies a nerdy girl and dates multiple guys she’s a bitchy slut. Jerry was Edited in a way that she appeared to be the islands femme fatale because well if you can make someone out to be a mean girl you make the person out to be a mean girl because peopleMWill tune in week after week hoping to watch the bitch eventually fall. Making jerry look like a villain was good for ratings plain and simple

One thing to say about remorse for Jerri. Some people are saying that by not showing any he came off as more genuine which was important. But in truth Colby had lied several times up until that point so not lying here or not saying something like what Denise said to Abi-maria just means you were willing to lie to get ahead but cared so little for someone's vote and opinions you weren't willing to lie to get it. That will indefinitely lose you at least 1 vote.

Great video! Season 2 has always been my favorite season and Colby my favorite survivor from that season. I've always been baffled by his performance in the final tribal council. It's probably all speculation but do you think he really didn't want to win for some reason? He came across as being very disinterested and unmotivated in that moment. Although the same can be said of his performance several times during Heroes vs. Villains. It seems like when things are not going well or he doesn't want to be doing something, he checks out mentally. I wonder if something unseen in the final edit helped bring that same demeanor into the final tribal council? Guess we'll never know but you're obviously a Survivor super fan so I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Honestly.... Colby was more of a villain in my eyes. Okay now hear me out, I kind of did a video on this too, but all throughout the season you see him belittling and insulting players he doesn’t deem as worthy such as Keith and Jerri and immediately they’re deemed as the bad guys even though we can’t pinpoint anything Jerri or Keith actually physically did to be labeled as villains besides Colby just deciding to not like them. Of course, this was aired way back in the early 2000’s which was a way different time than now, if australian outback aired today I think peoples views on Jerri and Colby would be vastly different with Colby being an arrogant douche and Jerri being a strong confident player. I do think that maybe you were a little blinded by the edit seeing as you gave colby hero points for just smiling while Maralyn compliments him and not entirely stating it was a dick move for him to throw water at jerri in a fit of rage (even though Amber lost the challenge for them) or when he said Keith’s proposal was just a fake with ulterior motives. No disrespect to you, but i’m just saying how Colby was so favored back then because of the “good ol country boy” edit while being young and attractive even though behind the scenes he was a huge dick who wasn’t really nice to anyone but the cameras, like a wolf in sheep’s clothing kinda deal. We see this come more to light in all stars when Shii Anne becomes the swing vote for either Jerri or Colby and votes Colby solely because he was disrespectful to her in the episode prior and thus is voted out for awful social game. In regards to him fumbling at final tribal, I believe he did state at some point that he just went on the show to try to boost his acting/hollywood career so he cared more about looking honorable and loved than actually winning. Jeff Probst has even pointed this out too, and I guess it’s worked since Colby has now hosted a couple reality tv shows including “The Butcher” right now. But anyways that was just my two cents on everything, love your channel and looking forward to what videos are to come!

Colby not only straddled two alliances (a classic villain move), I think he was the first in Survivor history to do so. And in doing so not only betrayed Jerri but also Amber and Mitchell. Yes, he was awful in All Stars to Shii-Ann. He betrayed Hatch. Was excited to get rid of Ethan. In HvV he backed Steph against James I'll give him that. That was his most heroic move of his three seasons. But then he spent the rest of the season looking apathetic, especially when Amanda needed his backing against Danielle

@@OnceUponAnIsland I would say it was more Tina than Colby. Because Colby seemed to be fine with Jerri until Tina kept going to him and telling him about what a manipulative person Jerri was. And then all of a sudden Colby's opinion on Jerri switches and he starts saying the same things. At least that's what it seems to me in this edited show. That's also one of the reasons why I disliked Colby a bit on rewatch. He seems a bit weak-minded and easily swayed. Amber's perception of Colby is that he's easily swayed too. She said that in a confessional.

To be honest, both Keith and Jerri were unpopular with the other players, not just Colby. Jerri came off as very unlikable in this season, and I think people are engaging in some revisionist history to pretend otherwise. For some reason I never liked him, the way he treated the whole tribe then specially Jerry was beyond forgivable , in All stars he did nothing and in HvV well everyone knew how awful he got that he got carried out by everyone coz they all knew he was weak and easy to beat. I am happy at least Jerry redeemed herself in HvV, and fans actually got to see her as person.

I too share your feelings about Colby and Jerri ... I feel like Jerri was misunderstood as she was cast in a bad light due to editing. Colby's "humility" did not come across as genuine to me, maybe because he always talk with a smirk on his face, it makes me feel like he's kind of bragging that he's humble when he say humble things ? I felt kind of glad that Tina won although she never did anything clever or great ... everyone said she flew under the radar and depended on Colby's dumb morals to win, to a certain extent its true .. But I don't mind her winning as she never did anything to make me hate her anyway .. the main reason I'm glad she won was because Colby lost and he lost in the dumbest possible way, it feels like karma for the way he seem to mercilessly trashed Jerri ... Although he did not owe Jerri anything, he should be aware that Jerri was attracted to him, even if he voted her out as part of a game plan, he did it unapologetically without feeling bad for Jerri, if he had voted out Jerri and feel bad about it I would think better about him but he in fact seem to feel good doing it ... I never liked him ..

I mean, Sugar was essentially harassing him. Jerri too, to some degree. Also, you have a rather ridiculous view of Colby. "Unforgivable"? What did he do? Blindside someone that he wasn't that close to? And in Heroes v. Villains, he wasn't the challenge threat he once was, but he almost certainly wins the game if he gets to the end.

Colby suffered from the fact it was Season 2. Most people who watched survivor despised Richard Hatch for being a Villain. Colby was trying to avoid this at all costs, he was less worried about the prize & more worried about Public perception. In those days it wasn't acceptable to be so cut throat by the Public, a different time for sure.

i hope the jerri video will have what was supposed to be perceived back then vs how it is right now... eg heroic moments presented back the 27 villainous 10 heroic... but watching them as of now, knowing al of survivor including outback would lead t eg 19 villanous 18 heroic

Colby did not lose in a 5-4 vote since there was only 7 members on the jury.. Also I disagree with it being dumb in showing remorse for Jerri as it's possible it would have come across as disingenuous and might not have meant anything to them or Jerri. Also I disagree that it was dumb to talk about how he wishes he appreciated the land.. I think that you could really only truly appreciate that comment if you were someone on that island, in that game, at that time to truly be like, "you know what, that's really good observation." They all agreed in the reunion that they agreed with Colby basically calling the land the "17th player" and I think it showed a human side saying that he wishes he had more appreciation which again could really only be experienced by the players themselves. I don't think that lost his vote from Alicia, I think Tina's answers throughout the night of owning her game and probably other stuff that showed she was clearly a mastermind at this game that I'm pretty sure the show didn't show nearly enough of was why Alicia picked Tina.

Also, the episode where Varner gets voted off, Colby mentions that he gave himself as bait to get the votes from Kucha which is a very risky, but smart move since he's safe from that night's tribal council either way. Yes it puts him in a vulnerable spot if he was targeted in a tied vote situation, but that would not have happened if Kucha figured out to vote out Jerri first. That would have ended his game regardless.

Why isn't he a villian? He was horrible to Jerri. I had a strong feeling that he considerd himself "better" than the others. Like he was for some reason so entitelt to win because he thinks of himself as a hero. I really don't get why people like him at all.

Colby kinda seems Machiavellian but that's not necessarily villain behaviour so much as dissonance between the editing and what's happening. I think a good cardinal rule is don't listen to what people say what what they do cause a lot of the time I've found that if you do that you can track somebodies trajectory p easy.

You seem to be forgetting the beginning of the video where I say that what is evaluated here is based on the lens of the shows story it is trying to tell us. That moment of him giving them gifts is considered a hero moment. The show doesn't say anything else about it.

Colby is a VILLAIN. Not because he is the first person in Survivor history to straddle two alliances simultaneously (that's fine), but his mistreatment of Jerri on a personal level is awful. Strategucally unnecessary things like throwing that water on her. But audiences let him get away with it because he's got a hot body. Sexy women don't seem to have that help them get away with things but men do and it's irritating.
