AUSTIN (KXAN) - Lake Waco, a popular spot for boaters and fisherman, recently earned a unique distinction: they're the only Texas reservoir that has eradicated their Zebra mussel population. The lake earned the title back in 2021, after a five year study of the waters following an infestation that began in 2021.

So "how they did it" is actually "they got really fudging lucky and caught it early." Talk about burying the lede.

From people’s boats, they should know that. People still use their boats from ocean to lakes.

Are they putting the plastic sheeting over the zebra mussels and weighing it down with sand? I just want to know how I can fight them.

Are you going to personally remove 100s of thousands of possible mussels? And if you take them out, their larvae are still probably swimming around and will start their life cycle again. So you’ll need to spend a lot of time and effort for something that isn’t guaranteed to work. With unlimited time and resources, sure. But thats not the reality for a lot of land management/community organizations. Zebra mussels aren’t the only invasive species, aren’t the only management species, and are a part of an ecosystem that is so dynamic it’s just tough to manage. Hence the deferment to prevention of their spread and not eradication.

Not for nothin... But lake Ontario used to be so polluted you couldnt even get 10 feet from it without gagging. As anoying as the zebra mussels are the water is so clear u can see 10 feet plus down! Crystal clear! So give the little guys a break! We polluted it.. They fixed it free!

They are edible but tiny and I hear there not tasty/ they are filter feeders so any toxins in the water is in the mussels/ they probably make excellent fertilizer
