Check your windshields, Texans -- drivers in most counties can forgo the annual trip to the shop when mandatory state vehicle inspections end next year. KXAN's Ryan Chandler explains.

In the meantime, we all pay a YEARLY registration fee for our licensed vehicles. Why??? The ONLY time we should have to pay for registration is when there is a CHANGE in registration. If I own a vehicle for ten years, I should only pay to have the registration put in my name, and then if I sell it, the buyer pays to have the registration changed to his/her name. Our elected officials claim to CARE about our wasted hours, but they certainly don't care about money they can take from us yearly for no good reason except to fill their coffers.

Still need an appointment and have to pay a mechanic for the inspection fee along with the state fee. Just so they can check your car to see if its producing any emissions related engine codes. Plus every year is ridiculous when a state like CA only requires it every other year. This needs to be readdressed.
@brassmule
@brassmule 24 күн бұрын
@@RKDriverThe current fee is $18.50. Mechanics are disallowed from charging anything more than that. My cars are all legit with zero issue and I do my own repairs and maintenance to ensure that, but I still slip the guy I go to a 20 and a couple of his favorite tall boys. Small shop and they always get my cars in and out fast. Time is money. Not sure how it'll change with just emissions really, other than the fee goes down. I bet shops that do it will become much fewer due to the lower fee, but many shops with the current system would find things wrong and make money on the repairs (or overcharging you for new wipers). The Texas inspection is nothing like something from PRNY where the physical safety of steering, suspension, braking, and the frame of the vehicle are thoroughly inspected. The big thing that prevents people from passing in Texas was emissions (evap, catalytic codes, etc), so that seems to still be the case for the bulk of Texas residents via population density, just not the bulk of counties any longer.

Equipment-failure injury & fatality accidents went up exponentially. Whether that fits your nannynannybooboo angle or not, it's a verifiable fact. Imagine that: all of a sudden, there is no requirement to have up-to-standards brakes, or safe suspension components including those that control steering & handling, or tires with a minimum standard of wear (and even wear), et cetera, and what do you know, crashes, property damage, and injuries increase at not-surprising spikes in statistics. Just so you will know: I was a mechanic inspector in those days and *no one* hated vehicle inspections more than mechanics; it *cost* us money taking time away from useful repairs. Full time inspectors never stayed long; even they could not make money on inspections. I finally rebelled at 1 of the training sessions and told them take my name off, I will no longer do inspections; my boss was waiting for me when I got back (they phoned him), but fortunately saw and agreed with my point of view.

Rich or poor, we’re all responsible for making sure our cars work properly and don’t spew raw diesel, gasoline, and oil. If you can’t afford an inspection once a year, maybe you can’t afford a car. Thousands of people are in debt up to their eyeballs in debt for a car, when maybe they’d be better off using public transportation, or the popular electric bike. I keep my 14 year old Prius in tiptop shape, instead of having a car payment and higher insurance premiums.

@@nickiemcnichols5397 You're preaching to the choir: I always kept my cars tip top and still do. The things that grieved me were the burdens put on people to save the planet which in reality made things worse. BTW a $200 brake job is fair but many times brake jobs and other things are much more expensive; out of reach in fact. When you do that kind of work daily you encounter people who can't afford a new catalytic converter (and other nonsense). In rural areas etc. there is not always "public transportation" available, not to even mention that many people who are healthy enough to drive are not healthy enough to use mass transit. The bulk of registered cars will still need emissions testing. Also, insider knowledge that TCEQ/DPS/TSIA are working to INCREASE emissions testing fees and expand emissions testing to MORE counties. Everyone who supported this measure just had the wool pulled over their eyes. As this was to get the ball rolling on increased fees for ALL! @iggie8144 my state, MA, was similar. I'd pass inspection because the guy would look the other way on small stuff I should fail for, such as an exhaust leak or light out. Get it fixed they'd say. Then the state passed a new law. Every inspection is on camera and the whole process recorded. The same place failed me because my passenger door handle was broken, so the camera could not see my back passenger belt worked. My exhaust that leaked, failed for that, and my plate light. The guy said sorry, but it's all on camera and recorded so he can't let it pass. I don't know if the actual test instruments also record. I went to this cheap auto body place run by Pakistani guys specifically so they'd overlook these small things. With the new way inspections are done, everyone is doing it by the book so far. It's known also, no more free passes. This doesn't stop you from driving an unsafe car with a red rejected sticker on it. But that's on the cops to catch still.
