For two days in mid February 2020 a group of foilers chased tanker waves up and down the Houston Shipping Channel in Galveston Bay. Shawn Watson, Nick Taylor, and Brian Grubb rode man made waves for miles as 1000 ft plus cargo and oil ships entered and exited the famous shipping port. Huge thanks to Captain Joe and his brother Doug for getting us in the right spots for endless rides and also to Sea Doo, Wakeboarding Magazine, Liquid Force, and Lift Foils for being down for an adventure.

They should build an artificial reef right there by the jetty to make it break real good 👍

The car carriers are the best wave makers, not because of their displacement, which at 50-60K tons ("supertankers " start at 100K tons) but because of their allowable speeds while in the bay, which are much higher. The reason for this is because the have more windage issues with their big slab sided hulls which make them more difficult to keep in the channel in response to the wind, and are easier to steer at higher hull speeds. You would think that more displacement would produce bigger wakes, but in my experience just is not the case.

It's more the shape of the canal or channel as well as to how it carries the waves. If you have a very long freighter in a narrow canal, you're going to get some waves with it too, as they push the water out ahead of them and then the water behind rushes back in chasing the ship as a mini tsunami. Good one here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bbChf8Zy0qvbfKc.html

Couldn't agree more if you've ever watched a surfer follow a ski boat in a bayou it's all about the lack of speed that creates his ride..

From T. C. Guys now in Bacliff is that to the left of the dike alongside the Skyline Dr towards the floodgates? Looks parallel to that drive... Super fantastic for sho man . If that's where I'm talking about I don't c why a howlie couldn't just ride back n forth with in and out bound traffic.... My wheels r definitely turning 🇺🇸🇺🇸🍻🍻🍻🌺

Never thought I would say this but I Suddenly want to visit Galveston 🤢🤮. Any spots in that area with vehicle access where one could drive in and pump up a kite? Getting out on a windy day and kitesurfing/kitefoiling that would be awesome!
@gulfsurfco
@gulfsurfco 2 жыл бұрын
They were launching from Texas City Dike which runs almost parallel to the entrance of the channel. The "spoils" (man made islands) are those areas with the rocky shoreline and those are closer to Kemah and Seabrook area. There are open places there to pump your kite.

Nothing wrong with Galveston. It's just silty water from all the fresh water being dumped into the bay.

Not really . Neither of those ports have the traffic density or the correct geographical conditions to emulate the style of tanker surfing found in the Galveston Bay.
