Just in case you missed it: Are Texans losing their famous twang? Morgan Williams went out to see if some Texans still have it in them.

It just depends on what part of Texas you live in. Pretty much everybody talks with a Southern Texas accent where I live. I live about 20 miles South East of Houston. People need to quit trying to purposely lose their accents too, be proud of who you are and where you're from.

Not sure it's purposeful so much as influence from people from out of state moving in and mass media promoting a more "General American" Midwest kind of accent. You get out in the boonies where more 'Native' Texans live, you might find your accent getting more pronounced. At least that's what I noticed when hanging out with the folks vs. hanging out in more metropolitan spots. I still have some accent markers, they just get unconsciously less pronounced.

West Texas has the twang. East Texas has the drawl. We even fold our tortillas differently. I'm 5th generation native Texan and 4th generation Houstonian. Eat 'em up, Cougars!

We used to be able to tell what part of Texas you were from. There were regional differences in the drawl. When I was young, we went to visit family in the Pacific NW. They found my drawl such a great form of entertainment they actually called friends & put me on the phone with them--hysterically laughing the whole time. When we got home, I was on a mission to get rid of it. Unfortunately, I succeeded to the point that as an adult traveling around the country, no one believed me when I told them I'm from Texas. I now speak perfect "Metropolitan" English. But, after moving back home several years ago, I have been working on getting my vocal heritage back. I am a proud 5th Gen Native Texan...I've decided to sound like it again!

Twang is east Texan

Twang is general to Texas, but East Texans lean a little more toward a General Southern dialect in their speech, while West Texans talk slower and have the more pronounced Texas twang. Folks in cities have less accent/more Midwest sort of speech in general because of outside influence.
