well it's definitely a lot more complex than that. Minor can be very harsh if you play and orchestrate it harshly. Here the softness comes from the dynamic and articulation rather than the key. Perhaps dark or dull is a more accurate representation of what minor really does?

@@connorcmusician surely it can; but I can remember some songs of my childhood - "Прекрасное далёко", "Большой секрет для маленькой компании", "Голубой вагон" - and they are minor, despite being kind, optimistic, in Allegro or so. (Sorry, can't remember English children songs of this kind; "Ants Go Marching" is minor, but it's a special case - and all those songs are not marches too). However, those song have many deviations to relative major and use many major chords. I think, in major those songs would be too bright and too annoying even by standards of children's songs, but using minor chords only - like in this video - makes song really dark and dullish - due to very that limitation too.

The first part is just like you've described, weird minor chords do create that sort of unsettling mood, but do people who don't know music theory/chords feel this the same way? Is it weird for an average listener?
